Indiana People vs. Ohio People
SIAP, but here's an eyebrow-raising excerpt from Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News comparing Indiana people to those from Ohio.
"Wolverines-Boilermakers is merely the opener in a huge one-day clash between the neighboring states of Michigan and Indiana, a friendly, respectful border rivalry. It doesn’t quite garner the attention of the Michigan-Ohio spat, largely because Indiana people are proud, simple folk, while Ohio people are dolts with horrific behavioral issues."

Here's what is weird about Indiana and Trump. Back in 2011 Trump was picked to be the pace car driver for the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500. Indiana residents were not happy. Everyone hated Trump so much that he was viewed as an unacceptable choice for the 100th anniversary of the 500.
People like me spearheaded a movement called Dump Trump to have him removed as the pace car driver. We did not talk to one single person who opposed our idea of removing him. We got the job done (writing letters, petitions, social media movement) and got him removed. Somehow, this state turned around and overwhelmingly voted for him to be President. Not good enough to drive a pace car, but good enough to run the country. Makes zero sense.

Worried about a pace car driver.

I gotta be honest. The Cincinnati fans that I met at the game were all super nice and solid people. Maybe the jerks live in Cleveland/ Columbus thing.

Cincinnatti is likely pretty well split between being an OSU town and a UK town. Lexington is only an hour and a half drive from there, about the same as it is from Cincy to Columbus. While they're definitely there, I don't think you're going to find as many rabid OSU fans in Cincinnatti as you will in Columbus (duh) or Cleveland.
Cincinnatti is also definitely much more of a pro town than it is a college town.

Pretty decent amount of UL fans in Cincy. Only 1.5 hour drive to Louisville.

never been to downtown Indianapolis. We also have a shit ton of great breweries.

Plenty of independently owned restaurants, breweries, and wineries now. I'll never understand the love Indiana had with chain restaurants, but it's finally subsiding.

Right on. Ten years ago was before the craft brew movement had really kicked in. Bloomington has culture to burn, so obviously that potential exists.

Tin Man and 18th Street if you like sour beers. Tin Man has other styles, but I highly recommend the Weld series if you enjoy sours. You can't go wrong with 3 Floyd's, Taxman, Sun King, Upland (also has really good sours), Triton, Flat12, and Black Acre.
September 22nd, 2017 at 11:48 AM ^
Not sure someone from the midwest can call themselves a "pretty big craft beer guy" if they haven't had anything made by 3 Floyds.

being in Chicago, I always forget that 3 Floyds isn't actually from here.

Is there any good beer from Chicago anymore? I lived there when Goose Island sold it's soul to the devil. My corner store kept a stash of Matilda from before the sale and only let people they liked buy it.

As long as Daisy Cutter is Half Acre's most popular beer, I'm not terribly interested.
But mostly, I'm still bitter about Goose Island being ruined.

I really try to judge people on their individual merits regardless of where they are from. The only knock I'll put out there against Ohio (other than the Buckeyes and their fans) is that the northwest and west-central parts of the state going south to nearly Dayton produce some of the most dreadfully boring drives on the face of the Earth. There are no features to the land except a stray Mennonite now and again. The drive south on I-75 between Toledo and Dayton is a drive through a part of the country that we seem to have forgotten was there.

For all of the Michigan residents shitting on Indiana and Ohio, I'd like to remind you that SE Michigan exists, and we know about it.
I'm from Indiana, and the only time I've seen parents pour Mt. Dew into their 2 year old's sippy cup was in Michigan. Your state also contains Lansing and all that it entails.

Lansing isn't as bad/gross as Gary or as boring as Ft. Wayne.

In general, these broad asides on a state scale are pretty dumb, as Michigan has more in common with IN/OH as an entire state than it does with many other states in the country (on a university/college town level, comparisons are more appropriate as the differences are much more drastic).
However, there are, for better or worse, two distinct differences between Michigan and Ohio/Indiana.
1. Rural Culture:
- In the rural parts of Michigan, the culture leans a little Canadian-esque, particularly in the northern half of the state.
- In Indiana and Ohio, the rural culture leans Southern/Appalachian, especially in the southern half of those states.
- This all makes natural sense given MI's proximity to Canada and IN/OH's proximity to Kentucky/West Virginia.
2. Politics (Whether these are pros or cons is up to you, but they are facts; not trying to be normative about which is better!)
- Michigan is far more politically moderate/liberal than Indiana, and to a lesser degree, than Ohio.
- In terms of politics, Michigan is very similar to Wisconsin and Minnesota (Lean Democratic states that can be swing states depending on the cycle; Obama won all three by large margins twice; Trump won MI/WI by tiny margins, his two closest wins in the entire country, while Clinton held on in MN by a tiny, but slightly larger margin).
- Ohio is most similar to Iowa politically (Swing States that decidedly Lean Republican; Obama won them both twice, but by thin margins, whereas Trump won them comfortably by large margins).
- Indiana is by far the most socially and politically conservative state in the Midwest, and is the only solidly Republican state in the Midwest. Romney won Indiana by more than 10 points in a year when Obama swept the rest of the Great Lakes region by mostly large margins; in 2016 Trump won by nearly 20 points which is a landslide (I consider the Dakotas-Oklahoma "The Plains", which would be a separate region).
- Indiana is most similar to Missouri politically, but Indiana is actually more Republican than several southern states (Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, although the difference among this group is primarily due to racial demographics).

Neither state can effing drive.
It's KEEP RIGHT except to pass. My god, how hard is that ?
Anyway, from my experience the more loathesome creature is actually the Indiana native. It's the completely unexpected and seething racism that narrowly gives them the crown over Ohio for worst midwestern state.
Congrats Indiana. Don't let the meth hit you on the way out.
