Michigan -9.5 at Purdue
For my fellow gambling degenerates.
Michigan is currently -9.5 at Purdue. The line has bounced back and forth between 8-10. Purdue is 2-1 and more importantly for some 3-0 ATS.
For value purposes, I have a bet from preseason on this game of Purdue +22, so quite the dramatic shift in 3 weeks.
Michigan also 3-0, but only 1-2 ATS.
Purdue is off to a great start but will have major disadvantages in the trenches on both sides of the ball (they only have 1 sack on the year). So who's laying the points this weekend?
Also of interest:
Notre Dame -3.5 at MSU
UNLV +39 at Ohio State
EDIT: Updated Purdue's record, they are 2-1* but 3-0 ATS

We see our TEs carry the day on O with a few distant strike attempts to keep their defense honest.

I watched the AF game a second time and beginning past midnight zulu. Gentry resembles a flamingo at times but damn if you aren't onto something. I think the kid is going to win games for us this season.

from the 8 yard line on the third and goal and get stuffed.
I really hope we get an explanation for that horrific call. I get they had some success on 3rd and long draws against Florida but from the 8 yard line, you dont have safeties playing 20-25 yards from the LOS.

Harbaugh mentioned in the presser that they had a RPO called down there. Speight likely checked to the run. AF disguised their blitz and stuffed that play.

Not only him, but Wheat and Eubanks are huge weapons. I trust they will be deployed in due time.

A few weeks ago, that's who everyone assumed would get most of the snaps and carries and it seemed like a good position group.
It's time for another WR to step up. DPJ started doing that Saturday. As good as Isaac and Black have been, their replacements don't worry me.

showed a penchant for missing cuts and fumbling (in the case of Evans).

He will blow out the record this week and of course the defense will shut down Purdue for the shutout

Don't give a crap about spreads. As long as our score is 1 point higher than theirs I couldn't care less.

that might happen sooner than later. 1 point is fine with me

i thought michigan would kick msu ass big time. now i just hope they win. i just said HOPE, i do not like them in the red zone. better improve or they will get their ass kicked
September 18th, 2017 at 9:07 AM ^
LMAO!! Okay, so you think MSU is going to kick Michigan's ass because UM has missed some redzone opportunities? You do realize that Michigan is 3-0, and has outscored its opponents 98-44, despite being 1 for 10 in redzone TDs, right?

Tremendous value if you can get Michigan for 7 points or less to couple that +22 you have with Purdue. Especially if you got bank on both bets.

It's so sad to compare today's offensive line to that team. To be able to maul DLs like that again...

Is this really a road game though? How many UM fans will be in the crowd for this one?
I am very nervous about this game, just like I was nervous against Air Force. Purdue has a great offensive mind running the show now so I suspect the ball will be coming out fast from the QBs hand pretty much all game. We need to pay attention to wheel routes and screens (a combination of what Cinci and Air Force exposed), and ensure that's covered. It's pretty much impossible to hit a deep route on Michigan unless they catch us in one of the very few non-blitz looks.
I predict Purdue will hit two big plays for TDs in this game and it's up to the offense to be able to exceed that.

Before the season started, I would have said this game would be like pre-Joe Tiller, where there are tons of empty seats and a good turnout of Michigan fans. But now I'm thinking the home crowd will show up in full force.
I'm a little nervous too. Purdue playing so much better plus a team's natural habit of playing better when Michigan comes to town.
September 18th, 2017 at 8:40 AM ^
I do think that there will be a ton more Purdue fans there than there would've been if Hazell was still running the show. But I'd still say that Michigan fans will make up roughly 40% of the attendance.
Top ten team, and the Michigan contingent always travels well.

Football is the ultimate team game. One person rarely is the reason for a loss. Speight has his moments but he was pretty steady Saturday. The hate this guy gets from a large part of our fanbase is getting ridiculous.
September 18th, 2017 at 9:12 AM ^
Right?
The narrative before the season started was that 10-2 would be a GREAT result because of the youth across the field. But now that the games are happening, and the offense is showing it's young age, all of a sudden the QB is the only problem with the team!

but Wilton Speight is the 2016-2017 version of John Navarre. Takes all the blame for everything that goes wrong. Surprised not to see someone blame him for Black's broken foot but just catching up on board traffic after busy weekend.

It's hard to tell if this game will really be close or not. It has the "feel" of a game that is going to be a big and tight game but that one team is going to physically come in and physically own the other. I believe that is what Michigan will do. I think their size adn speed on defense is going to freak out Purdue and they will react like many of the RR michigan teams did.
That said, I like that it feels like it will be a tight game. Players don't live and die by point spreads but I've spent a lot of time in division 1 football programs (including purdue's) and players do know what is being said and what is expected and a 35 point spread or an 8 point spread does have an impact mentally on the guys.
I like how this game feels. Spread is somewhat tight, on the road, but a very winnable game. Great setup for a young team to game valuable experience. It's also 4pm so not a night game but the place will be rocking.

By all means, send everyone into the endzone! And leave the OL alone to pass block, because the right side has been so good at it... Nothing like getting Speight killed, is there?!!?
That Butt deep cross? I'd like to see it, but the TEs are staying in to help the OL most of the time. And maybe all of those young TEs just can't run routes as well as Jake Butt could?

Evil vs. evil in East Lansing.
When I was a kid, I would watch that game and go back and forth about 30 times over who to root for. Being older and wiser, I know not to bother with that and just be happy knowing one of them will lose.
If recent history is any indication, you have to like Sparty's chances if the game is close in the 4th quarter. But fuck both teams, obviously.

My former mother-in-law was at my house years ago when msu was at osu. I believe it was the John L ~"the kicker is killing us" game. She asked me who was playing.... (twice causing me to watch it in on a mini TV just to avoid being in the same room). Then asked me who I wanted to win. I said I hoped they would both lose. She said that one team had to win. I said I hoped whoever won would get sanctioned by the NCAA and have to forfeit the W. Wasn't too far off.
So I concur. F both teams. But 'd rather beat the holy hell out of an overconfident msu team after listening to their fans talk about how they're back the next 2 weeks.

My dad and I had just pulled off the State Street exit going to the big house for the Penn State game (Henne to Manningham on the final play) when they replayed the clip of John L.'s rant over the radio. One of the funniest things I ever heard.

Not too concerned about the defense showing up and doing what it needs to do. Purdue's offensive issues seem to have been figured out to at least some degree, but this will easily be the best defense they've played thus far, and may be the best one they play all year.
The question will be whether or not the offense can hold up it's end of the bargain. Answer to that is TBD. I don't know how good Purdue's defense is supposed to be, but they went on the road and held Mizzou to 3 points. That's impressive. And they didn't let Lamar Jackson run totally wild, so that's saying something too. If the offense continues to sputter in the red zone (or just sputter in general), I think there's only so much the defense is going to be able to do on it's own. Especially to a team that wants to go up-tempo and consistently attack our defense where it's weakest: through the air.
At some point, unless drastic changes happen the offense will cost this team at least a game or two. I'd rather it be to another top-10 team like PSU or Wisconsin than effing Purdue......

by 1 point. I'll take it. Though I don't see how we won't beat Rutgers and sparty by combine 100 points or more. At Purdue, just win.
GO BLUE!!

If I was playing this week, I'd play Michigan to cover 9.5, and I'd play more than just a little. Maybe somewhere in the middle. Offense is not firing on all cylinders yet.
