Renewed pursuit of Martin could signal end for Nico

is an outside guy, Martin is a slot. One doesn't have to affect the other.

I don't think we are looking to take both, but also not sure why it would have to mean Nico is out. It's obvious that the staff feels much less confident in Nico than they once did, so getting back in on Martin just makes sense. I would guess the first to commit now gets the spot. Hopefully one of them will.
January 17th, 2017 at 7:07 PM ^
Agreed. Recruit them both, recruit them both hard....we have one spot. First guy who wants it, the other one is out.
Enough holding spots to get burned at the last second. If ti's the #1 kid in the country okay...if it's early in the recruiting cycle...that's fine too. But in the last 2 weeks. It's all about who WANTS to be a Wolverine.
I really like Martin and with ol' boy in some legal trouble, I actually think Martin can play right away. DPJ, Hawkins and Black are going to be just fine on the outside.
I love Collins too, don't get me wrong, he can go get the ball as good as anyone I've seen in the country. But we can't sit around and watch him commit to UGA at the last second and get stuck with nothing.
January 17th, 2017 at 1:39 PM ^
but we currently have 27 commits in a class that might get up to 32. The 27 contains Kai Herbert and Kurt Taylor, both of who may not end up in the class.
Players we are in on:
Collins
Martin
Becton
Solomon
Tufele
Jackson
Gay
Slaton (maybe)
Ford (maybe)
Thorpe
If we don't have any decommits then I don't think there will be a spot for Martin. If we lose Herbert and/or Taylor, I could see UM taking both Martin and Collins. Obviously this is just my guess.
Concerning the list above, I don't think we have much a shot with Tufele, Jackson, or Slaton. Ford and Thorpe are total wild cards. Pretty decent shot at Collins, Martin, Solomon, Becton, and Gay.
EDIT: Samuels may be a soft commit right now as well, though I believe he will remain in hte class. Who would really choose Arizona over Michigan?

Absolutely correct. Martins recruitment has nothing to do with whether Collins joins the class or not. I believe they will take both if they can get them. Whether that was always the case, who knows, but I think they will go after both of them with equal intensity. Go Blue!.

4 WR. Martin would take Nico's place. Not sure we get either at this point. It's all up to Pep now.

when you get close to signing day. The projected numbers for position groups change too.

Everytime something happens, people jump to conclusions. Let it play out! We're gonna be just fine!!
GO BLUE!!

No, but having Wheatley, Nico's primary recruiter, heading off to Jacksonville shortly after Nico had a surge of interest in Georgia certainly has a large affect.
If he was trending Georgia before Wheatley left, I'd say that's a pretty bad sign. Going to be tough to hold on, or make up ground on Georgia with a new primary recruiter a few weeks before signing day.

DCGrad is right. I think this moreso points to Hawkins playing in the secondary since we missed on Hicks and the BC commit.

well that escalated quickly...

Martin can play outside and the slot. He can also play a little DB and return punts. The problem is, we have fallen behind ND and maybe MSU and Iowa on him. UCLA and OSU jumping in aren't going to help. We have some work to do here. Need him to take an offical. I think Iowa is actually the darkhorse here with a new OC, with Greg Davis they were out of the picture.
My guess is Martin goes ND, unless Pep has some serious recruiting game. Same with Nico, he is GA unless Pep can close. If Pep can close on both, I think Kurt Taylor is out.
I would rather have Nico than Martin, but as I said before....If we get Solomon, I don't care if don't get anyone else.
January 17th, 2017 at 4:54 PM ^
Edit. Just saw article about UCLA, Florida and OSU coaches visiting Martin.

Meh. I could. We lost out on some guys we thought we would get. Now that we have space for 32 and trouble getting there, why not fill with best available. Jim Harbaughs personality and meritocracy will lead to a higher transfer rate than we are used to around here.

There was also this guy called Najee. We could quite possibly throw in Sebastian or another safety like Paris Ford. While this may well signal Nico going elsewhere, we have room for another skill position player. Martin was probably the best of all the ones we had a good shot at.
A problem with too many WRs will sort itself out. Having one more good option is not a bad thing. I like it better than just adding someone for depth where there isn't a dire need.
January 17th, 2017 at 12:36 PM ^
Agreed. I don't understand who everyone thinks we get. Even if M closed on Solomon, Gay, and Becton, we still probably lose Herbert. That would put us at 29, 30 if we added Martin. Which two other players would be better additions than Nico?
January 17th, 2017 at 12:39 PM ^
how we get to 32 without using greyshirts or blueshirts
30-32 is what has been thrown out there as class size but going past 30 requires the above

January 17th, 2017 at 2:20 PM ^
a couple of blueshirt candidates. We can certainly get to 32 if desired.

Place in Flat Rock has great biscuits, but grits up here...forget about it. Don't get grits north of Tennessee, they don't get it.

I'm still dumbfounded by that.
If that's not proof that its time to do away with the NCAA, nothing is.
January 17th, 2017 at 2:06 PM ^
Some staffer at a school misunderstood the rule. Admittedly they have a lot of rules, but even the NCAA thought it was silly.
