MBB: Coaching candidates?

Anybody who comes to mind if Warde decides to encourage Beilein to retire? Love the hell outta Beilein but I think it would be wise for him to retire, in hopes of maintaining his legacy here. The Program needs new energy.

He has definitely missed on Doyle, Dawkins and Chapman. Get where you're coming from but don't think any name thrown in this thread of wishes would actually help aside from the Cal pipe dream. Comparison of the enemy ... Thad Matta. I know it's not a great argument because they have done nothing since Oden / Conley. Perhaps it's the worst argument ever but there's a reason they have stood pat. Their leadership hasn't been able to find a better replacement. How's TX doing with that sexy Shakha hire? If Warde (don't go so hard on the Beaver) moves the boosters will need to seriously ante up and offer NBA $ for an existing Godfather.

OSU is winless in Big Ten play and every OSU fan (the ones that care about basketball anyways) is calling for Thad's head.  My guess is he's gone sooner rather than later and OSU steals Archie or Marshall or Chris Mack while we stand pat.

Shaka isn't doing great this year but it's only his 2nd season.  Gotta give him more time than that before you can judge whether he did or didn't work out.

There's a reason Marshall hasn't left for open jobs before and wouldn't grab OSU spot when it becomes available. Wichita St is the only game in town and even if they get KU sloppy seconds they are attractive leftovers. I willl again default to this - unbiased fan opinion. What programs does UM fall ahead of in the NCAAB pecking order? Kentucky, Duke, Arizona, Michigan St, Wisconsin, UCLA, Kansas, North Carolina, Syracuse, Indiana, UConn? UW is debatable but we are at least behind 2 teams in our own conference and yes coaches at all these programs are set but that also means prying recruits from these programs will prove to be just as difficult as it has been for John.

And not some dried, shriveled up former coach Has to be someone who can steal recruits from current Mt Rushmore. Someone recruits know and can relate to with a playing pedigree and assembled staff of NBA player personnel / coaches. Jay Williams for example - we all know he's not far removed from Duke and Chicago Bulls but recruits know him from ESPN. Pair him with ____ NCAA lead asst + retired NBA folk + Battier and you have a formidable opposition to the old, stuffy regime. That's the only formula I see better than what we have.

+1 for Mike White

Need to bring in a defensive minded coach because no team has won the championship in the Kenpom era with an Adj D of 22 or worse.  Beilein's best Adj D ever never came close to that.  So clearly we need to do things differently next time.

Other names that intrigue me (relatively young guys, not big names, don't make a ton of $):

Mick Cronin, Cincinatti (always great D)

Kevin Willard, Seton Hall (had solid D at Iona and again at SH, recruits 5 stars who get to the league)

If we want to spend like we have the most, and can convince donors that basketball should be just as good as football, then hire Marshall, Bennett or Hoiberg (he makes 1.6 with the Bulls). If we have limited money, then Archie seems like the obvious pick.

The dream is Brad Stevens, but that would take Harbaugh money, which I doubt could ever happen since most of the blue blood donors seem to think of basketball as an afterthought.

And not the softened up PC version of the past few years...

Angry old, player abusing, chair throwing psychopath Bobby Knight.

We need to kill Freddy P Soft.  Get Knight for like 3 years, then hire someone mentally stable and capable of coaching without verbally and physically abusing players.

He will be our "cold turkey" solution to being a pussy team, and then we can move on to a sane coach.

Chances aren't great of getting him but he is from the midwest originally and UVA as a university is a mess right now. Maybe? My next 4 in order would be Chris Mack (Xavier), Chris Holtmann (Butler), Archie Miller (Dayton) and then Gregg Marshall (Wichita State).

He can grab talent north of the border and relate to recruits. He can afford his own superstar staff of NBA moguls who would appeal to development and if all else fails sign ex players to record deals. Lawyered.

Fred Hoiberg, Chris Mack, Archie Miller, and Gregg Marshall would be my top 4. Bryce Drew is another intriguing name. As much as I would love a Sean Miller, Tony Bennett, or Jay Wright I don't think they are realistic

I'm shocked no one has said the obvious choice. Manuel needs to hire Coach K immediately. We all know he'd come to Michigan in a heartbeat...right?

On a serious note, I wouldn't be surprised if we see one more year out of Beilein. I can't imagine Michigan would fire him, just yet anyways, so the only way he isn't Michigan's coach next year is if he retires and he doesn't seem like he's ready to do that just yet.

Enough with the Bennett talk. He has no incentive to rebuild Michigan. He has a top 10 freshman class that includes last years Indiana Mr. Basketball..in Virginia! He has elite facilities and competes in the ACC. If he said no to Wisconsin, which he did last year, he certainly will to Michigan. UVA has just as much money too.

I like the sound of Brad Stevens as well as Gregg Marshall at Wtchita State. I'm just not convinced that either can out recruit Izzo, Motta, Calipari etc. If they can't do that and coach, what's the use? Both of these guys are known for doing a great job with less talent. That's what Beilein is known for.

I know these coahes are up and coming stars, but unless you get a guy who can get the best Indiana prospects, Ohio prospects, and steal recruits from Izzo in Michigan,   FAGETABOTIT

The coach would have to be highly recognizable, can evaluate and develop talent,  and finally can coach his ass off in games. Anybody out there like that??????

i may be way off base here. But recruiting, swag, familiarity (NBA countdown)... he would check all those, less of the X and O's. It would be controversial and a high risk hire but I think he could appeal to kids.

I think Jalen would probably be a homerun for recruiting but can he coach in high pressure game situations and manage a program? Unfortunately he's unproven in those areas but I like the thinking. He's high profile and recruits would respond.

That would be a great hire in my opinion, but time after time Mark Few has turned down big money jobs to stay in Spokane. He loves it there, his family loves it there, and he has made it clear he will retire at Gonzaga. Considering there were once rumors he turned down UCLA, he's willing to say no to any blue blood school.

Not a shot in hell.

We've got a better chance of Brad Stevens having an itch to coach in college than getting Few.

Don't think Jay Wright would leave to go to a "football school" either.

Tony Bennett would be another major name I'd add to the list...midwestern roots, high academic institution, a fan base who isn't going to mind his style as long as it comes with W's.

After that, I think you've got a realistic shot with Marshall, Miller, and Mack...the 3 M's (and add McDermott for a 4th M)...IF you pony up the big bucks.

If we get rid of Beilein this year I think that will make it tough to get a quality coach. It will signal that expectations may be unrealistic and that coaches are given short leashes even a few years after huge successes. If we don't make it to the NCAA tourney this year AND next year then it is time though.

more than once every three years at Michigan isn't unrealistic.  The runner-up team and the Elite 8 team were great, but he's giving us zero indication that he can get back there.  Firing Beilein shouldn't have a negative effect on Michigan's ability to replace him.

Can Marshall or Stevens go head to head in recruiting against Izzo, Calipari, or Coach K and win their fair share? Both can coach and have an undeniable ability to evaluate and develop talent but will they make recruits say "I want to go play for him instead of Calipari or Coach K?

Is there anybody out there that checks every box?
