OT(ish): "Kill" & Rutgers' "Offense" - Match Made In Karma Heaven
Jerry Kill to be Rutgers' OC?
http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/18307021/rutgers-scarle…
First obvious reaction: Given his health history, which you'd think will only be a recurring issue, they must figure a good OC is better for half the games than what they've been doing for a full season.
Second obvious reaction: Is this a change in style? Didn't Ash want to run an Ohio State / Tom Herman-type offense? (As if you could discern exactly what they were trying to do last year anyway). I don't think of Kill as THAT style.

Good for him. Good luck to you Jerry!

It's clear he's a great coach, players love him, other coaches love him... Universal adoration.
He's been dealt a clearly shitty hand with the health issues he's been battling. It became abundantly clear as his time at Minnesota went on that the unpredictability of his condition made coaching a tough gig to justify.
Maybe being a coordinator is a better fit, as much as he said stress was not a factor. But it seems to me, as nice a guy as he is and as much as we want to see him succeed... It's rolling the dice to take a chance on Jerry Kill at this point. MIght be that a consulting/support staff gig is a better fit.

Maybe, but even if he claims it's not stress-related, that it wasn't about being on the sidelines versus being in the booth, that he was doing everything he could to improve the situation... It never got better. He was in the booth, and he still had problems meeting the demands of the job.
So, sure, maybe being a coordinator is better. I tend to believe it probably won't be, again, as much as we want the guy to succeed.
And this is particularly interesting given the fact that he's outright said that he cannot be a head coach again, didn't see himself even coaching again, and that administration was probably his path going forward:

I'm guessing that being an OC in the B1G East is more stressful than being an assistant AD at Kansas State. If stress aggravates his condition this might not be a good move.

He may be a good guy off the field but his teams were dirty as hell on it.

HIs teams were pretty dirty off the field too, apparently.

Uh... Didn't that happen on Claeys' watch?

They're all Kill recruits. And in the report one of the players makes it sound like that night wasn't the first time they had engaged in a team bonding event like that.

I heard a radio interview with him where he came off a bit salty toward Minn. I think his implication was that he expected to move over to an administrative position within the athletic dept but was instead show the door after he stepped down.
He landed at KSU and sounded very happy in his position. I wonder what changed?

I thought he is was loved in Minnesota, can't they find a gig there for him? Not sure why he would want to take any unneeded risks at this point in his life.
December 18th, 2016 at 9:50 PM ^
He already has an administrator gig at Kansas State, and he's a Kansas native. I posted the link above, he was glowing about how it was basically the perfect gig for him at this point in time with everything he's facing...
And he's going to go coach at Rutgers?
December 18th, 2016 at 9:51 PM ^
Not for Claeys, at least. He already ruffled some feathers by letting some of Kill's assistants go. It would be easy to see other staff and players taking sides if Kill was still around and there was some tension.

It can't be too stressful at Rutgers, considering that they are expected to get stomped in the B1G East every year.
That being said, this makes Rutgers offensive coaching staff better than sparty's.

I really wish he wouldn't do it. He's better than Rutgers. He's better than Ash. And I worry about his health. Epilepsy doesn't get better...

Rutgers 2016 rankings:
Total offense: worst
Pass offense: 7th worst
Rush offense: 25th worst
Scoring offense: 2nd worst

I like Jerry Kill but I don't really get the hire. His defenses were his anchor and I don't remember his offenses being anything to write home about. Add that to the fact that he hasn't been an OC in over 2 decades...
But I suppose Rutgers really has nowhere to go but up.

Sounds like they might be playing telephone at Rutgers. "Kill the football program" somehow got distorted to "Hire Jerry Kill".
