they really should only let Notre Dame and the service academies do the Ireland games.

As I recall, the land granted as the site for Notre Dame in the 1840s was granted by the Bishop Of Vincennes, who was a French-born cleric in a then young Indiana, to a French missionary, so there wasn't much that was Irish about it at least in the beginning. To me, that's part of why the Fighting Irish - in Ireland in these games - never made a lot of sense aside from the nickname.

It's just their mascot. This is like saying only Florida State would make sense to play on an Indian reservation.
Boston College makes MORE sense than Notre Dame. Does ND have some irish connections due to Catholic roots? Sure a little, but no more than any other school in the midwest.
And you would be surprised about Georgia Tech and their Irish connections. I was born in Ireland, and went to GT undergrad.

Irish in origin or not, the truth of the matter is that Notre Dame is probably one of the best known American universities overseas due to pop culture osmosis and they have the ability to sell a lot of merch in Ireland. UCF-Penn State isn't moving any needles.

Over here in Asia, it's the one game of the year that is in prime time. A bunch of ex-pats are getting together to watch it at a friend's bar. I have another function to go to, unfortunately..
I made it very clear that however the evening unfolds, I must be back home and conscious in time for you-know-what.

You cant watch the game because they have banned TV for today in deference to the death of president Karimov.
