Hm, I don't think that's accurate. According to Cal's website they have 206 medals (updated yesterday). Michigan's site says we have 155, but was not updated to include any Rio medals yet. Also, the whole counting Phelps or not, as well as coaches, etc makes this hard to evaluate. Anyway, 206 medals wouldn't be top 10 for a country. Australia has 468 and is 10th all time. Maybe they were talking about just in swimming, where I could see Cal having a really dominant amount. Either way, still impressive for both schools.

 

Edit: I just realized you were probably talking about just medals in Rio so far. I was thinking all time.

What an amazing ride. Despite swimming allowing for multiple medal opportunities given the number of events, Michael has to be considered the greatest Olympian of all time.

Now what I find even more incredible js that Katie Ledecky has a chance to come close or even break Michael's record of medals.
