Rashan Gary Argument
So my friends and I got into an argument. One of my friends is an OSU fan and the other one is an MSU fan. They told me that IF Rashan Gary committed, then he would start immediately on the d-line. I argued that there was no way in hell because our entire d-line next year is filled with seniors who can play at a high level. I also said that he might become heavily involved in the rotation but not starting. Then my friends said that he is more talented than anyone on that d-line right now, and you have to play the best players no matter what. I'm wondering what you guys think about this? Would Gary sit behind an experienced defensive line or start ahead of all of them like my friends think?

I don't think he'd start, but get some PT.

we might have things out of order.
lets have the lad commit first, then argue.

talk about a nice problem to worry about, makes me smile!!!!!
or cackle with glee!!!

lets hope we have them soon re: gary's playing time.

Nonsense, that's such a loser mentality to have.
To answer the OP: Gary will backup Hand.

I've got Mone and Glasgow holding down the nose. Henry and Hurst playing the 3 Tech (because Hurst HAS to see time, he was a beast towards the end of the year).
Wormley and Gary on the strongside.
Charlton moving to the weakside and starting and then we'll have one hell of a competition between...
- Jones (who's moved to MLB for the time being)
- Winovich (who moved to TE/H-Back last year)
- S. Johnson
- R. Johnson
- C. Kemp
- L. Marshall
I'm absolutely positive Greg Mattison can find a backup WDE or BUCK with SIX choices! (In fact, 1-2 of them will probably need to bulk up and fight for backup time behind R. Gary in 2017).

I believe in Harbaugh and his staffs ability to judge talent and reward playing time accordingly. So I guess as talented as Gary is I think that at this time no one knows for sure.
January 10th, 2016 at 7:46 AM ^
Trust Harbaugh. Tell your friends that a guy who took UM from 5-7 to 10-3 in one year can do what he thinks is best and if they want to second guess him, they can do it silently.
I agree with the assessment above, that he'll get playing time but not as a starter. The one thing about a good d-line is that they need to have good chemistry and communitcation to be really good. Think back to RVB and MM...guys were calling their own stunts, essentially commanding that defense. A defense that was not that great in the backfield, but because of the pressure those two put on a QB...made the backfield much better than they would have been otherwise.
Now, IF...big if...Gary IS that good, then we all will have lots to be happy about.

My friends have different perspectives. My OSU friend thinks we have bad recruiting classes (dumb I know) and Brady Home's bad coaching that lead to every players damage in potential. My MSU fan thinks we had great recruiting classes but even worse coaching. He wanted Home to get a 5 year extension.

new friends.
January 10th, 2016 at 8:52 AM ^
...MSU and OSU fans don't really know much about what is happening in A2 under Harbaugh. They follow their own teams closely, and only observe Michigan casually and from time-to-time.
So, naturally, they are going to be really bad at comparing Gary to M's returning d-line players. They are making uneducated guesses, at best.
My educated guess: R. Gary plays a lot as a true freshman but, barring injuries, will not be listed as a starter.
My other educated guess: R. Gary swats away the Ol' Miss bag man temptation and chooses M.

sounds great.
If I win the Powerball, I am going to get myself (1) a tour of the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory, and (2) dinner at Red Robin with Harbaugh to pick his brain about football and life (probably not for sale though).
You are welcome to join in on both.

So if you had a MSU friend, how would you respond to him telling you to respect Dantonio and keep you Sparty personnel opinions to yourself? Yeah.

I could easily seeing him getting a lot of PT in the 2-deep at SDE, but would be surprized to see him get much PT at NT/DT unless there are injuries or they move one of the DT to SDE.
January 10th, 2016 at 7:49 AM ^
He would rotate in but not start. If the rotation and performance proved a start maybe then or at that point.
The best part about all of this is your friends know just how good he is and likely that he is coming out Ann Arbor.
Either way; win win for you.

January 10th, 2016 at 8:44 AM ^
My OSU friend is so blinded by Urbanz goggles that he thinks anyone who doesn't want to play for the god that is Urban Meyer is stupid and not worthy to be on his team. But my MSU friend is a little jealous even though he says he would rather have a 2* that is hungry and feels disrespekted than a spoiled 5* who has everything given to him.

I thought it was going to be something like "Twitter and Instagram blew up Saturday night after several people posted videos of Rashan Gary and his mother getting into a heated and loud argument in a New Jersey McDonald's over his choice of universities. The audio is garbled, but it appears to show Gary's mother vociferously advocating for Michigan but her son announcing his choice of Mississippi. Both have refused to comment."

If, God forbid, we're decimated by injuries on DL, he could start at some point next year.
