We bitch about calls, but that's a big one that went our way.
Technically it was a defensible call, but that's a call you never expect to get in that kind of situation.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
...which is why they changed the rule and it would be the wrong call this year.
It was actually that play that they showed to the refs in training them for the new rules on block/charge.
So, I'll continue bitching about calls...because given the rules then, they made the right one. If it happens this year, I'll say "we got lucky."

Agreed.
It's not that it's inherently a better situation than Maryland, it's not. It's that the AD and fan base will give you the 2-3 years of breathing room you need to build up your resume and then get a job in the SEC which is what Durkin really wants.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:21 PM ^
SEC teams won't come calling?
Guarantee he could get a job like S. Carolina if he has resonable success at Maryland for a period of time.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:30 PM ^
I'd say it is, though. Syracuse is something of a sleeping tiger, they have legitimate history that few Northeastern schools can claim and capture more of the NYC market than Rutgers ever could.

You could easily argue that Maryland is the better job.
People saying because it's in the B1G East need to grow a pair. You don't run from competition. Not saying you said that...but I've read it too many times.
There is plenty of opportunity in the B1G East, and do enough and you can still go coach at 80% of the schools in the country. Hell Dan Mullen was debated (by fans) for the MICHIGAN job. He's in the SEC West.

That's your opinion and you're not arguing as fact which is a breath of fucking fresh air around here.
I'll say that I disagree. I think Maryland can be a very solid position.
People forget what Michigan St. was before Dantonio.
Maryland, with leadership and it's resources - likely isn't going to be MSU because Michigan is good (whereas Dantonio lucked out with Rich Rod/Hoke eras - I don't think he becomes the coach he is today if we had Harbaugh all those years)...however, I think Maryland can have years were it finishes 3rd in the east.
8-4/9-3 type team. That's not saying if he's that good of a coach he couldn't do the same at Syracuse. I'm just saying it's not impossible to win at Maryland. And with the resources, recruiting, etc.
I personally, would rather be at Maryland than Purdue or Illinois, even though they're in the weaker division.
December 5th, 2015 at 6:47 PM ^
Exactly. Resources are the big difference. With B1G money and Under Armor money (Oregon lite) you can do a lot. Will almost certainly never win the B1G east before moving on, but getting into some nice bowls with the included tie-ins isn't out of the question. They both need to build programs. Maryland has better middle ground and ceiling if he stayed.

I wish Illinois would've hired him.
Would've liked to have seen Minnesota hire Campbell from Toledo.
I know MAC coaches in the B1G haven't always done so well, but I do think those are two solid coaches.
I'd also like to have seen Purdue with a new coach.
Those types of teams, the Purdue's and Illinois' should adopt the Big XII method...just go get REALLY good on one side of the ball (offense), and upset a few teams each year. Be that dangerous 6-6 team like Texas Tech or WVU. Rather than a glorified MAC team.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
No one wants Schiano.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
I'm so confused.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:28 PM ^
What's funny is that during the MAC Championship last night, they were talking about how blunt Babers was with his team, talking about how he told them that this past week had been about that game, but after that game, he had to "listen" like any coach. While I am sure he was listening to Syracuse a little before last night if it is a done deal now, the approach to his now-former team was certainly an interesting one.

Cuse is like 15 years removed from being a consistent 9-10 win team. It's far from impossible.
December 5th, 2015 at 1:33 PM ^
But you know they were in a completely different conference back then, right?
December 5th, 2015 at 2:14 PM ^
Yeah, a conference filled with like 95% of the teams in their current conference. Are FSU and Clemson a bit more daunting? Yeah, but they should still be able to put a winning program together.
December 5th, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
The Big East...
BC, Pitt, Louisville and ND were...that's it. And ND wasn't football. That's 3 teams.
They went to a much tougher conference (for football).
The Big East was in the process of losing it's automatic bid. That's part of the reason Syracuse is even in the ACC, lol. That's how bad they'd gotten.
December 5th, 2015 at 3:30 PM ^
back in the 90's, when Syracuse was a perennial top 20 team, they had Virginia Tech, Miami, Pitt, and BC. Obviously Louisville came in later, during the GERG period for Cuse. That means the additions are UNC, Duke, Wake, GT, NC State and UVA in addition to those I listed.

I coach men's semi pro and I can't tell you how many unbelievable athletes there are that could've went D1 easy but never cared about academics, it's mind blowing.

Certainly not a bad academic school, but I would agree with its usual academic ramking of a Purdue, Minnesota, Rutgers-like 55 - 65 ranked school overall.
December 5th, 2015 at 12:42 PM ^
Tons of great coaching hires in the ACC this year. Fuente, Richt, Mendenhall, and now Babers. Sort of reminds me of the 2011-2012 coaching carousel in the PAC-12 when Jim Mora Jr., Rich Rod, Mike Leach, and Todd Graham were hired.
