Bowl game DC?
What is the protocol for coordinators leaving?
Given that we haven't had a coordinator poached by a power 5 (in name only in Maryland's case) in a very long time, how does this all work?
Will he have an option to coach the bowl? If so, I say no. Eff that noise.

A Michigan man is going to coach Michigan. Not a Maryland man.
Pack your bags and get the hell out of here.
Neg away. Many people feel the same way.

Whatever you may think of the original quote, I'm sure Bo wouldn't have said this about an assistant getting a first head coaching job.

If someone had tried to poach Bo's staff on the way out, that's probably the kindest thing he would say.

Do you think he said that to Bill McCartney and Gary Moeller when they left Michigan for Colorado and Illinois, respectively?

Neither of them stepped out the week of The Game. That's the issue I have with him.

New jobs don't always pop up at the most convenient times.

Magnus, no shit they dont. However during the Game week, all he had to do was say "Thank you, but my team is playing our biggest rival and for the Big Ten Championship this week, so lets set something up for after the regular season ends to talk"
Maryland would have respected that, hell....they may have even admired that. A man with dedication to a very important job, who sees it through is more valuable than one that is pursing other opportunities during the most important time of the season.
If Maryland would have passed...no biggie because those in the know on other programs who are looking, would see that Durkin did right by his squad. That is what its about man.
If he was that concerned, he could have told the press he was contacted by Maryland (or dont even mention Maryland by name), but that you are not talking to anyone until after the OSU game. THAT would have tossed the ball right in to Maryland's court. If they had moved on...there is no doubt that other schools would be impressed by Durkin and give him a call too.

"If Maryland would have passed...no biggie"
It's "no biggie" to YOU. You are not the one who is getting potentially a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a head coach at a Big Ten school. Maybe next year there are no job openings. Maybe the defense at Michigan goes south, he gets fired, he moves to Colorado State-Pueblo, etc.
It's easy to sit here and say, since you're a fan of Michigan, that it's no big deal to pass up a head coaching job so he can concentrate fully on one game. You are not in his shoes.

Very true and insightful. No one turns down a shot at a major job upgrade interview. Moreover, it's very common to take co-workers along for the upgrades that they might get.
I'm a hundred percent sure Harbaugh, who grew up in a coaching family, understands this and encouraged Durkin to go and be interviewed.

How much time do people actually think Durkin spent with the Maryland job? Seriously. I'm sure spending an hour on the phone with the Maryland AD didn't change anything about his preparation.

They were the HMFsIC and even Mallory left for a HC gig. Bo just didn't believe an asst of his should go to be an asst under someone else. And he didn't care too much for ND.

What assistants did Moeller and McCartney try to take?

Carr spoke at Schembechler's memorial service a few days after the legendary coach passed away. He talked about the time Lou Holtz offered him a job as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. It looked better and paid better, and Carr thought he should take it.
Bo's response said it all.
"No, you're not going to Notre Dame," Carr said, quoting Schembechler. "You are Michigan, so forget that. I don't want to hear any more about it."

"Many people feel the same way" is never a good excuse for being a dick. We all knew he was going to be here for a short time. Be a "Michigan Man" and wish him good luck. Next man up.

or NY Giants LB Coach (former UM DC) Jim Herrmann?

Do you honestly think Harbaugh let Durkin give anything less than 100% for that game? You know absolutely nothing about how any of it went down. Relax.
December 2nd, 2015 at 7:58 PM ^
No one is being a dick. I don't wish our DIVISIONAL opponents WHO WE FACE EVERY YEAR good luck. I don't wish people who attempt to poach our staff good luck. That's just stupid. I know everyone loves to neg WD, but he's spot on here.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:00 PM ^
Wishing someone good luck is not the same as saying "I HOPE YOU BEAT US." Opponents wish each other good luck all the damn time. It's called sportmanship. Wishing Durkin good luck isn't going to change a damn thing when the two teams play.

+1 Insightful

I understand those who are pissed, but I have a feeling Harbaugh was genuinely happy for Durkin and expects him to take the job right now with "enthusiasm unknown to mankind."

Taking a huge promotion is a bit of a different situation - pretty sure Bo and Moeller were on good terms.
Also, Bo wasn't perfect. He could be a hothead and a dick. He wasn't a great AD and he knew it. Obviously Fisher worked out, but can you imagine if he hadn't?

There's no problem with the leaving. The problem is interviewing during rivals week, getting blown out while running a shit scheme, and then trying to poach our staff. Ignoring all that - sure great luck! One might even find DJ's low class exit to be Urban-esq.

Jerry Montgomery. He's the defensive front assistant with the Green Bay Packers right now.
