Jaylen Brown Down To Five
it could happen?
We normally don't do minute-by-minute updates on specific recruits, but when it's crunch time for a guy who might be the #1 player in the country that's an exception worth making. So: UCLA sources are reporting that Brown has dropped the Bruins and Scout's Evan Daniels says that his list of eight is now five:
Jaylen Brown is down to five schools -- California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan & North Carolina -- a source confirms to Scout.
— Evan Daniels (@EvanDaniels) April 27, 2015
The other teams cut are the two Georgia schools that seemed like courtesy listings for the locals.
In the wake of that news and Austin Hatch going on medical scholarship, Michigan has scored a bunch of Crystal Ball predictions. I wouldn't put too much stock into that, as Brown's recruitment has been extraordinarily tight-lipped, but it's better than the alternative. A staffer on 247's Kansas site thinks Kansas is all but out as well and that the three schools with a real shot are Cal, Michigan, and Kentucky.
I've been scouring the relevant message boards and Kentucky guys have not been particularly optimistic despite their recruiting proficiency… but again, nobody seems to have a feel for how this recruitment will go. After all, many thought UCLA was the leader.

That's not necessarily true. If Brown has been favoring Michigan, he would have to wait to commit until Michigan found out about Austin's medical from the NCAA. It could still be coincidental timing of course. If they are connected, I'd expect Brown's commitment in the next day or so. Any longer wait and the less likely it looks.
I REALLY, REALLY, want Jaylen Brown to come to Michigan. It might be coming down to the Good Guys vs. Cal, but you never want to count out Kentucky for reasons I don't need to state here but we all know.
I agree. I don't know if the people pulling the trigger on CB predictions know that, though.
But why announce the Hatch medical now unless you're pretty sure someone is coming (Brown or Williams)? If we miss on both, we'd might as well just keep Hatch on an athletic scholarship, and that would be weird after yesterday's announcement.
I think another possibility is that they want to announce the Hatch thing now so that a commitment doesn't lead to a wave of "Brown/Williams forced out Austin Hatch" stories.

Lots of tea-leaf reading here. The announcement was made as soon as the approval from the NCAA was received--as would be the norm--not related in any way to Brown. The decision for Hatch to medically redshirt was also, by statement and all appearances, also unrelated to specific recruiting targets--though freeing up a scholarship generally was likely a consideration.

Oh, got it. I didn't realize that the NCAA just gave its approval. Damn.

They announced Hatch will receive a medical hardship because a governing body (big ten I think) just made the decision. Nothing more complicated than that I think.
That's absolutely true, but even if Brown doesn't fall to Michigan is does sound like Williams from VCU is in play. So either way, having that extra spot means Michigan has a better chance at landing a recruit than if they had sat on it for another year and Beilein had decided to stand pat.

What's the decision date?
He's said late April, but that was only ever a self-imposed deadline.
Signing period ends on May 20th FWIW
Yay!
Not a lot of luck the last time the "please please please let me get what I want this time" tag was deployed.

no link. sorry.
Wheeler high school in Georga just tweeted "After Brandon Ingrams commitment, gut feeling JB will commit in a week or so." So if this medical scholoriship hype is a thing and the tweet is true I'm liking Michigans chances with the moment the are getting!
For this reason, I think it hurts our chances. He was watching to see where Ingram went. Ingram wasn't being recruited by Michigan. Now that Ingram went to Duke and not Kentucky, it may mean he is leaning towards Kentucky since their is another open spot. I don't think Ingram going to Duke helps us.

I can't think of a bigger recruit unless you say McGary or GRIII. Can you guys think of any bigger recruit and you can't say Trey or Nik because they were not that coveted coming out of High School.
The last big five star michigan got becides McGary was Manny Harris, and of course Chris webber was probably the biggest for michigan ever so there is that.
Deshawn Sims was a higher 4*
He was also a bit of a surprise commit coming from the deep South.

Traylor was number 3 behind #1 Kevin Garnett and #2 Ronnie Fields if I recall correctly!!
Ward was highly overrated.

HYPOTHETICALLY!! And not to get hopes up, but if Brown were to commit, what does our starting 5 look like next year? Whose minutes does he eat up?
Who gives a shit? hahahaha WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ONE OF THE TOP 5 PLAYERS IN THE NATION. Im sure nobody will have a problem with having dawkins sit for longer time on the bench if it means we get JAYLEN BROWN!!
Starting 5 of Walton, Levert, Brown, Irvin, and Doyle. It gets messy when trying to get all the bench guys some minutes. Obviously Dawkins and MAAR deserve to play their share, and Spike of course if he doesn't redshirt. Wagner will most likely play some. Then what do you do with guys like Wilson, Donnal, and Chatman? One of Wilson and Donnal would have to play to spell Doyle at the 5.
PG Walton
SG Levert
F Jaylen Brown
F Irvin
C Doyle
Then lots of quality depth coming off the bench. With or without Brown, 2015/2016 is going to be a very fun season.
lol Dawkins is no Jaylen Brown.
