OT: UM AD made $13M on $158M in revenue in 2013-14

From MLive, the athletic department continues to grow in revenue and profit, beating our erstwhile AD's estimate of how much money they would make:

Football brought in $91M, men's basketball $14M.

We've been through this a gazillon times with women's hockey. The fan interest hasn't been there, and when you put it up alongside a bunch of other potential sports that don't have such astronomical equipment, facilities, and maintenance costs, it's a no-brainer decision. Why do most schools not even have men's hockey? Combine the fact that the women's game is significantly different than men's, and men's hockey is already a niche sport in itself...

In other words, don't hold your breath on women's hockey. It is and probably should always be a strong, healthy club sport at Michigan.

Honest question:  what would be the point of making the men's rowing team a varsity team?  Men's rowing does not have a Big Ten championship to compete for, and it does not have an NCAA championship to compete for.  It's not a sport recognized by the NCAA.

Aren't there some sports better served as club sports?

Honestly, and this may be unpopular here, but there are a good chunk of the non-revenue varsity sports at Michigan that should have remained a club sport. There's no need to support dozens of programs that by definition do not make money, do not have substantial fanbases, and little growth potential. Adding more sports just to add more sports is simply foolish.

Looks like you're just looking for excuses to get rid of Michigan sports which we can support with a 13 million surplus, one of the best football staffs in the country, and one of the best coaches in the country. What's your deal with softball, track etc.

Not sure why it isn't included separately in that report, but I would like to know the hockey specific numbers.  Does the program make money or just produce enough revenue to break even?  For some reason women's basketball is included (big money loser, less than $100,000 in ticket sales) but hockey is just lumped in with "other sports".

It's really unfortunate that something was deleted and that none of these comments make any sense, because from what I've seen, it would have been highly entertaining.

The surplus they're reporting is the now-audited total for 2013-2014.

Brandon's forecasted surplus of $5 million is for academic year 2014-2015 that will conclude in this summer.  They haven't reported even an unaudited number or updated estimate for that yet.

The budgeted profit for 2013-2014 was about $9 million.  If you look at past budgets and compare them with the actual numbers it is not unusual for the total profit number to come in better than forecast.

I think the takeaway from this thread - as I have found in a few others - is that modding on the laptop is fine, but then sometimes I have to whip out the phone to remember why the hell I did something. In some ways, that's a lot like my actual job, where I can work all I want but the calendar on the phone reminds me why I did it.

As for the caution:

The audit does provide a bit of a caution, though, when it comes to what the numbers could look like for next year's final line as ticket sale numbers for Michigan's 2014 football season suffered a sizable drop.

They also cite the ongoing expenses from upgrades as a reason to be somewhat cautious too, but all the same, their total net position increased quite a bit in 2014, so it seems like they are doing well enough servicing the debt.
