Tressel says OH recruits to leave OH "not significant"
Tressel says UM is "a ways away" from OH's level. I do think JH will need time to go undefeated in the B1G and compete for NCs, but Tressel also said the OH recruiting door has been closed and remains closed, and that those who have left have not been significant.
Composite top-10 OH recruits: 2012 Bolden, Kalis, Wormley, Wilson...2013 Thomas, Charlton, McCray, Butt. Throw in Henry, Gedeon, Smith and all the others and it's time to be significant on November 28.

This block quote is from the paper that shall go linkless for the sanity of this thread.
"The door got closed on the real high majority of any of the Ohio kids leaving Ohio to go there or anywhere else," Tressel said "If you think about some of the tough times we had ... you look at the stars of (Michigan) teams, and those players were from here. That door has closed. If you look back and see what has snuck out of the door, it isn't significant. That door is still closed. If it remains closed, we'll have a real chance to enjoy some of the good successes we've had in that rivalry."
EDIT: 1) this implies Hoke's OH recruits are not significant and 2) implies that the only way for UM to get to OH's level is to beat OH recruiting in OH. I think its time for UMs OH guys to be significant and I don't agree that the only path to an NC is through OH (although, OH is one of the key states with FL, TX, CA...and MI (UM must keep the best).
Hoke cracked it open, hope Harbaugh can throw it wide open
What's interesting is Roby, Hyde, Shazier, Bosa, Barrett, Elliott, Spence and Jones have been Urbz' "stars" not from OH. They get the best from OH, but aside from Miller and a couple others, the out of staters have been the stars for Urbz.
Jones is from Cleveland. Hyde is from Cincinnati; he didn't move to Florida until his sophomore year of high school. Pretty much the entire O-line is from Ohio.
Remember that one time Jim Tressel was forced to quit his job as head coach of the Ohio State Football team..........
Happy Easter! Go Bucks! -jt
Yeah, that was awesome.
Hell, once a year, I burn a sweater vest to mark the occasion.
Who the fuck cares what ghost Tressel has to say. IIRC, the guy lied and cheated his way through his tenure at ohio. His claim to fame came from the worst call in BCS history.
Go Blue!
his way through his entire coaching career. Hell, he couldn't even coach at Youngstown St. without cheating.
Poor little Jimmy. You can tell he desperately wants to be relevant in the college football world again. Maybe he shouldn't have tanked his coaching career by running the dirtiest program in football.
What's up Bagheera?
Ah, that explains his Chicken Little MBB talk yesterday.
We are not getting the best guys out of Ohio. If you look at the head-to-head recruiting for the top guys now compared to the 90's it isn't even close. Although some of the guys, like Kalis, probably would have turned into elite players under Meyer rather than Hoke, in 99% of instances this is just true.
NO SHIT ! Let's see free cars and tats, don't play skool andoh yeah, they just won the NC - and we had Hoke. NOTHING in college football reamins the same for all time. Just wait, Urban will be ND's coach within 3-5 years ....
Go Blue!

I don't understand it either. OSU is a far and away better football program than ND. You don't leave a job like OSU unless you're fired or want to jump to the NFL, which Meyer will never do. We're going to have to deal with Meyer for about the next fifteen years, unfortunately.

Harbaugh hasn't coached shit yetYeah ... hardly any coaching at all ! /s Go Blue!
When Harbaugh starts beating Meyer, Meyer will leave OSU. Whether it's a "retirement," "health problems" or his "dream job," he will leave. It's just a matter of time. The rivalry is cyclical and it's time for Michigan to be the better team for awhile. Meyer won't be able to take it.
and Michigan and OSU were also essentially his dream jobs--those were his 3 out schools while at Florida. And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't Meyer have gone to ND from Utah if he had wanted to? There is zero chance he goes to ND--if for no other reason than its higher entrance requirements.
Notre Dame is his ''dream job'' that he turned down to go to Florida for?
his wife said that was the only job he would have gone back for at the time. His dad was a huge OSU fan.
Depends on how you define best players. Are we talking about the top 10 players in the state? Top 30? Top 50? There is quite a bit of wiggle room and flexibilty for the interpretation of such.
What may have been better for Tressel to say is that even with the players Michigan got under Rod and Hoke is that there failed to be proper player deveopment even for guys who were elite coming out of school to guys who weren't in the upper eschelon of Ohio talent or in general. I've followed Hoke recruitment well but their is no way that if Kalis came to OSU he would be as slow to develope his technique as he is at Michigan...
I think he's judging that we haven't gotten the best recruits so far out of Ohio, but based on on-field performance. Well Ok. This year will be the judge of that, since coaching should be better.
He is a Youngstown guy so this isn't totally crap, but he's ignoring Hoke's recruiting successes there and also is just a bit biased.
Agreed. He's shining a bit of a spotlight on himself as well as poo-pooing the recruits who have left. The names I mentioned all considered themselves among the best in the state and need to assert that on the field. Obviously, the coaching was a huge issue.
Browsing through the Rivals DB, it looks like Michigan did not win a head-to-head battle for an Ohio recruit in the last 2 classes. Tressel is correct in this matter, but he should know more than anyone that things can change pretty darn fast in the rivalry.
The 12 and 13 classes are more relevant than the 14 & 15 classes. The 14 class was tiny and the 15 class not much bigger, but more importantly, 2015 was impacted by the coaching change. FWIW Ferns was offered and almost committed to OH. UM won the recruiting battle, but he left of his own accord to WVU.
OH. We haven't challenged them for regional dominance since the currently recruited kids were in Kindergarten. If you don't think that matters, you're nuts.

All these rivals keep talking. Please keep it up.
From the teams to the fans at MSU and OSU they must be dumb or blind. They really think Michigan is going to stay bad forever and when they get punched in the mouth on the field it will be awesome.

This is self-solving. Meyer wants to recruit more nationally. He will still take his core of Ohio kids, but he'll be limited on how many he can take.
If we start winning and showing a pulse, we will be a natural draw for top Ohio kids, just like we have been for 100+ years.
There will always be a few Ohio State lifers that we won't get (and never got in the past either, like Spielman), but we will get more than our share of top Ohio kids.

He is not wrong but before Tressel came around we got talents like Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson out of OH. We are not getting anywhere near that type of talent out of OH anymore - and yes those are Heisman winners but I am speaking of 1st team Big 10 types. Tressel did a hell of a good job of shutting down Michigan from OH for elite players. The ones we have been getting have been 2nd tier of late. Or a guy like Jake Ryan who was an offer sheet full of MAC teams who flourished but that is not the point of his quotes - we are not pulling the elite guys out of OH when they are viewed as elite in HS - and its important for Michigan to at least be viable for some of them.
but Ohio is only one state where both schools will go for top talent. Yes, it still has a lot of good players, but states like Florida, Texas, and California still dominate. Ohio will probably keep beating us at recruiting until Harbaugh starts winning big and gets his player development juggernaut fully built out. Besides, beating Ohio at recruiting in that state will always be very difficult. The best we will be able to do is pull out a number of top kids they wanted too. But, it isn't that big a deal any more with recruiting being so national for both programs.
Michigan has never beaten Ohio State for most of the top recruits in Ohio. Yet we still managed to beat Ohio State on the field.
We'll be fine once we stop shooting ourselves in the foot.
he was still the coach @ OSU. As much as I'll enjoy Harbaugh beating Meyer into little bitchcakes every November, I would have liked to see him do it to Tressel even more.
Don't get me wrong, I can't stand Meyer. But I might piss on him if he was on fire. Tressel, not so much.
