Well it was a fun 24 hour recruitment.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:34 AM ^
Can't win them all, especially when all of your recruiting battles happen in the last 5 seconds of the metaphorical play clock.
And as much as everyone is enjoying (and also stressing) the recruiting process, it is important to remember that JH is quite good at maximizing talent in kids. He will make players who are already here better by Fall camp. Full confidence.... 100% intact.

that makes no sense as there are 0 valleys in that picture
January 27th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
If you go about a mile off of campus, Allendale looks just like this picture. Most of the kids go to Grand Rapids for the weekend

Mt. Pleasant

Well he is from the state of Nebraska, so he won't be in for any surprises re: topography.

was full of shit, man. . . .

who don't believe that JH has a magic wand.
January 27th, 2015 at 3:41 PM ^
By necessity we're taking shots at kids we have no real relationship with. Not a surprise a lot of the shots go wide. It does show that the Harbaugh name gets him in the door at a minimum. We shouldn't be surprised or discouraged.

I wonder how confident Michigan is on actually hitting the 16 person threshold that's been talked about recently...
I feel like 13 might be the ceiling for the # of commits. Bank the rest for 2016.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:56 AM ^
JH will hit whatever number he wants to hit. I'm pretty confident in his ability to identify underrated talent. So if there's a serious need, I could see him grabbing a 2* or 0* that he thinks he could coach up.
But I also think that he won't take just anybody to hit a certain number. He'll bank slots if he has to.

source or sarcasm?
January 27th, 2015 at 9:36 AM ^
January 27th, 2015 at 9:39 AM ^
But why would a coach say that out loud? And why would the recruit or his dad repeat it publically?
How many kids currently on the FB team could have gotten into Michigan without FB?
January 27th, 2015 at 9:45 AM ^
Agreed. It's one of those things that are universally known, but people just don't talk about. Why would you mention it?
January 27th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
My only guess is that they mentioned it so that the kid knows he's going to really have to work hard on the academic side.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:49 AM ^
I don't get. But I doubt Mattison said anything to intentionally offend the guy.
But I don't know. Maybe the visit wasn't going well, Mattison felt like the guy was being disrespectful, figured we're not getting him anyway, and so reminded him why the University of Michigan was even talking to him.
I could see myself doing something like that. But I have a bit of a temper. Mattison, I don't know.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:56 AM ^
I think he was more trying to let the kid know the great opportunity that he was being given. If you can use a skill to get you into a great university that you would not otherwise be accepted into why not use it. No sense in using that skill to get you into a school that any schmuck can get into like osu. Kid just took it way wrong, his old man took it wrong and in hindsight, maybe that says something about the kid and his old man.
Lots and lots of very very smart kids don't get into UM, so... yeah, it means the coaches are calling you stupid. SMH
January 27th, 2015 at 9:58 AM ^
Maybe I shouldn't have gotten into UM..
January 27th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
I just can't see Mattison doing something to disrespect a kid. That is just not the way Mattison does things. We have seen so many of his pressers over the last four years and I can't name one time when he wasn't a class act.
I'd like to hear the rest of the story before accepting what this kid said.
As someone else posted, perhaps Mattison was saying that the kid was going to have to keep his nose to the grindstone to succeed academically, but that is merely being honest.
January 27th, 2015 at 11:18 AM ^
...from someone other than Mattison or the staff, because, as Baumgartner points out in his piece: "Michigan is prohibited by NCAA rule to make any public comments about an unsigned recruit."

Neal: "They basically tried to call me stupid in my own house." ... Apparently Michigan offended the Neal family quite a bit there
January 27th, 2015 at 9:52 AM ^
~50,000 HS seniors applied to U-M; ~15,000 were admitted. It doesn't mean the other ~35,000 were stupid.
Apparently Daddy Neal equates applying to U-M with colleges where applicants are admitted if they can fog a mirror.
January 27th, 2015 at 3:40 PM ^
Exactly. Daddy Neal has an ego problem. Maybe he can afford the out-of-state tuition for Michigan, but I highly doubt his kid would get accepted.
Sounds like his dad was for Nebraska all along, anyway.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:06 AM ^
There's a reason Nebraska is not part of the AAU - should be a good fit for this guy.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:52 AM ^
What does the Big 12 being pissed that Nebraska left, and Nebraska's nationally respected med school not counting towards their AAU status, have to do with this kid going to Nebraska?
January 27th, 2015 at 10:22 AM ^
These kids have been told they're nothing but gods on earth for their entire lives. Sounds like the coaching staff either needs a softer bedside manner or are trying to weed out the primadonnas from the grinders.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:35 AM ^
lol wut? Go on...
January 27th, 2015 at 9:36 AM ^
That's exactly what every Ivy League football recruit hears. Solid decision making to take offense to the statement.

does he think he could get into Michigan without FB?
Why be offended when someone is just telling you the truth?
January 27th, 2015 at 4:51 PM ^
I have no idea why, let me go ask my fat girlfriend.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:39 AM ^
Of course, they're very well funded, and so good coverage of tuition is in play for lower income families.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:43 AM ^
I saw that, too. Crazy. Given that it was Mattison, I have to believe it wasn't as blatant as "you never would have gotten because you're not smart enough." Maybe something more along the lines of "this is a great opportunity to attend a university that you ordinary might not have access to."
But that's pretty bad to get tossed out of a recruit's house like that. Yikes.
January 27th, 2015 at 9:48 AM ^
of all people who Neal was offended with. Makes no sense and I'm 100% positive that G-Matt would never "call someone stupid to his own face".
January 27th, 2015 at 10:00 AM ^
There are many kids and parents who are sensitive, especially parents of kids who are special in one way or another. An innocent or straight-forward comment was probably taken too seriously or too harshly, and it was blown up into something it was not.
Obviously, Mattison - or any coach - wouldn't call Daishon Neal "stupid." That would be a waste of everyone's precious time, including that of Mattison, who could spend time/energy pursuing other prospects.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:21 AM ^
unless he misspoke. I would assume Dad may have misunderstood or be extremely sensitive. Mattison didn't just start doing this. Steve Lorenz seems very surprised that it would be Mattison.
If you know how Greg Mattison recruits, you are highly skeptical of anyone saying he "tried to call me stupid to my face".
— Steve Lorenz (@TremendousUM) January 27, 2015
January 27th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
Semantics:
"...tried to call me stupid to my face" or "basically calling me stupid" is not the same as Greg Mattison looking him in the eye and saying "you are a stupid."
January 27th, 2015 at 12:06 PM ^
It sounds like this kid is very "special."

it sounds like someone is a little over sensitive. No one called him stupid and maybe he didnt like the fact that someone was being honest. They arent talking to you because of your SAT and ACT scores. Mattison is a professional and for these two to attack the mans integrity is absurd.
Also, daddy might want to realize its his son and not him being recruited because daddy is a bit overbearing. Now just be a grown up say it didnt work out and move on to your second choice Nebraska.
