Meta: Keeping the board SFW
Would it be possible to keep some of the more racy profile pics off of user profiles? I remember this was enforced maybe a year or two ago, but it seems that there have been lots of new posters/new avatars lately with mostly-naked women on them, which isn't conducive to reading MGoBlog in a work environment. I'm not sure if the mods wish to continue the policy that they enacted awhile back, but it's sort of starting to get to the point that I don't feel comfortable reading MGoBlog at work any more.

You have my vote, but just because I don't like the RCBM-ness of having pictures of naked girls all over the place. It's not what the blog is about and it's a little creepy in my opinion.

Personally, it's a little gross to me. I don't want to know what gives you...uh...pleasure. I am, however, interested in your source on who is being hired to be our S&C coach.

Agree with you and OP. I'm here for Michigan sports: JH and coaching and recruiting and basketball and the occasional good OT read. The internet has become a huge place to share all kinds of pics, but not on any mainstream sites, and not on this site.
It isn't classy and just is better not to do. As Magnus said elsewhere, he changed Touched the Banner so you had to deliberately click through to see any photos.
As for what is permissible and what isn't, that's a bit tricky. I don't exactly know the answer. For me, mgrowold's avatar is perfectly fine. Attractive women are always fine as avatars. But somewhere, there is a line which defines good taste. This is a cop out, but if you're not sure, ask your sister or mother or wife or girlfriend. Obviously, mgrowold's wife has no problem with his avatar. Same with my wife having her pic as my avatar. On the other hand, I'd like to know how many women out there approve of the "pimp hand" photo. My guess is not too many.

Because getting laid is the end-all be-all of every person's life, right brah?
Grow the eff up or take your misogynistic bullshit to another site

"good sir," "chivalry," "gets you laid..." I only needed a "white knight" and I would have won Manchild Bingo!

Grow up. He asked in a nice way and he also had a good point. There's no need to be rude.
January 6th, 2015 at 2:10 PM ^
...because it's self-evident that looking at pictures of hot chicks is the real way to get laid all the time.

This place, dare I say it, is at its best when it's at its most Michigan. That is, thoughtful, well-reasoned discussion with a dash of salt. It is completely unlike other sports forums and that's something to be valued. Save the trashy, misogynist avatars for NFL forums--if they exist.
Oh, yeah, and GET OFF MY LAWN.

Constantly viewinng pictures of half-naked women is not a love of women, but of their bodies. Those are two different things.
I'm a man. I like the female form. But I also know that there are more to women than jsut their bodies. This has not always been the case for women in human society. Women used to simply be mothers, caregivers, and tools to bond one kingdom or tribe to another. This is where their sexuality and looks came into play. For woman her value in society was very much attached to her physical attractiveness. The prettier or sexier she was the more valued she was a lover or commodity for exchange.
I like viewing women in bikini, but within reason. I rarely visit Maxim or these other men's magazines because I don't need or desire to see sexualized woman every day of my life.
We are sexual beings. It's normal to enjoy viewing scantily-clad women. But again, within reason.

A woman is more than just her body. Hopefully, you now understand what I was saying.

the rapist, or the abuser, etc. I'm fairly certain they "appreciate the female form", but not the whole of the woman.

Er no, it's not. Additionally, you may way to avoid posting about your feelings on women's roles within society while doing so using the name of a current coach at UM. Impersonating other people is the type of thing that can get really thorny really quickly and it's generally not the kind of issue you want to have to deal with.

you are here acknowledging what I only suspected. Women as objects isn't love of women. You really don't get to decide what is misogynistic, the object of the misogyny gets to.

some women who think posting pictures of "boobs" is somehow a compliment or love of women--yes, even outside of the (scary) Women Studies Department--which reference says pretty much all one needs to know about your respect for women.

According to wiki:
"Misogyny can be manifested in numerous ways, including sexual discrimination, denigration of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification of women"

January 6th, 2015 at 1:07 PM ^
it appears you like the "parts" of a woman rather an actual thinking person. Liking strippers and pornstars isn't respecting or liking women. Again, your choice to go the Women Studies Department route affirms this.

January 6th, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
of course, but there is a difference between real women (including strippers and pornstars) and your objectification of them. My guess is you don't really have relationships with real strippers or pornstars. When you see them, it is the one-dimensional parts thing. Its your perspective that troubles me--not the women.

Also, remember this blog is not a men's-only domain. Women participate in this blog for the up-to-the minute (second?) gossip about what is going on with the football-staff hiring. There are lots of other locations that you can go for the other stuff.

And forget viewing MGo at work:
"Hey, John Q. Employee. Are you viewing gay porn at work????"
"No sir! It's my favorite football site, MGoBlog"!
"Suuuure it is. Please go meet with HR. And for the rest of you, I am hereby blocking this gay porn site 'MGoBlog'. No more pictures of bulges in the workplace"!

Maybe have a user option to remove the avatars too?
January 6th, 2015 at 10:54 AM ^
censorship sucks...
If we could just not see avatars that allows people to choose without censoring what people choose to represent themselves with.

Calling this censorship is ridiculous. Keeping the board clean is not keeping anyone from expressing their opinion or anything. It just means that things that have nothing to do with this blog or board do not belong here. If you all need to see pics of naked women, I'm sure someone would be happy to pin a post with places you can go to find them.
January 6th, 2015 at 1:32 PM ^
what you are talking about is the definition of censorship. You are seeking to 'censor' the images.
love you,
jdon
ps. it's ok to want to censor some things, we all have a little imperialist in us.

This is a Michigan Sports blog. Censoring out certain things such as politics, religion, and sexy pictures helps to strengthen the message and main priorities of the blog.
This is not a censorship of ideas in regards to Michigan sports. There is also ample room within the contraints of the rules for individualism through the avatar, username, and tagline.
Even the freer posting sites like 4chan have moderators to keep certain categories decent and on topic.

First they came for my pictures of women in bikinis...
Then they came for my thinly-veild nazi references because owners of a private site enforcing basic rules of behavior being compared to nazis or censors is childish behavior which I should've grown out of in the third grade.
