Tim Drevno To Be Michigan's Offensive Coordinator
Here's some water-is-wet reporting: a couple of solid sources indicate that USC offensive line coach and running game coordinator Tim Drevno will be named Michigan's offensive coordinator in the near future.
This is also being reported by USC reporter Gerald Martinez; it is all over USC paysites; USC OL Zach Banner (remember him?) has tweeted out a farewell.
I am happy for Coach Drev and wish him luck with his new job because he deserves it. He has a great opportunity. I love that guy.

Drevno's history as an OL coach is unquestionably excellent, and he was Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at San Diego.
FWIW, Michigan was high on GA OL Chuma Edoga's list early in his recruitment; he's now a USC recruit.

where you kick the opponent up and down the field is manball.
With Harbaugh, this could very well be creative, muscular, and dominant ball.
I'm calling it CREASCULANT BALL!

That's encouraging about his O-line coaching, but it says nothing about his ability to oversee the entire offense.
EDIT: This is not to imply I'm unhappy with him being on staff.

but it's not related to the OL pro bowlers being evidence that he's a good pick for OC. I think he's a good coach, and I'm glad he's on staff. I'm just withholding judgment as to whether he's right for OC.
I hope you're right, and as others have stated, perhaps it'll be shared duty with HARBAUGH.

I am sure we will know more as soon as spring rolls around but for now blind faith is a good thing.

was better but the QBs got worse as the year went by. I certainly would NOT judge Nuss by his one year under Hoke. Good luck to him. He took a chance and it didn't work out. He may not have been able to put out the tire fire on his own.

He got an enormous 3 year contract after getting pushed out by Saban. He was the QB coach here. One has to wonder how much of our tire fire was his fault.

USD scored like 40 points a game under Harbaugh/Drevno. I think we'll be ok.

You hit the nail on the head. He's been with Harbaugh for every year of success, and the only one he hasn't the offense struggled. Initially when I saw the news I cringed a bit but looking at the background I think this is definitely a good hire.
December 31st, 2014 at 10:16 PM ^
We don't know what his role will be. Offensive coordinator doesn't mean offensive playcaller.
For example, Notre Dame has an offensive coordinator but his job is to install the offense and teach the players how to run it. Brian Kelly calls plays. That's how Harbaugh did it at Stanford, Roman was OC and Harbaugh called plays.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:40 PM ^
And Harbaugh is an offensive-minded coach. It's not like Drevno is going to be up in the pressbox, calling his own game, with no line of communication to a head coach who doesn't have much of an idea about what is happening after the ball is snapped.
Harbaugh will be intricately involved in the offensive schemes as well as the play calling. Regardless of where he is or who does what...that will always be the case.
I deem this to be very, very good. And I think a lot of folks here (kool-aid drinking, euphoria aside) will agree. This is a great move, and I think time will bare that out.
December 31st, 2014 at 5:13 PM ^
Who calls the plays in a Harbaugh Offense? Does he do it, or would Drevno do it?
December 31st, 2014 at 5:24 PM ^
Unlike certain former coaches, Harbaugh has discovered headsets. Rumor has it that headsets are good for communication as well as ripping off one's head when our new coach's emotions boil over a wee bit, not that he ever shows emotion....ha.
I am trujly delighted to see an emotional coach back on the sidelines.

I believe having an OC who is also a kick ass OL coach will be great.

I'm not so sure about him as an OC.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:31 PM ^
It may be similar to Calvin Magee and Rich Rod. I'm not worried.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:39 PM ^
Jim is the de facto OC. He gets the best OLine coach with an upgrade in pay and title. Drevno, who's been an OC, can implement Jim's vision. All good.
December 31st, 2014 at 6:49 PM ^
that if the OL is as good as his previous iterations, our offense will be very good.
I am also of the opinion that I will say "Drevno? More like Drevyes!" far too often after TDs. I will hold my hand up for high-5s after each of those comments, and rightfully be left hanging.

Does anyone know why Drevno was bumped down from OC to OL coach (with Shaw receiving the promotion) going from San Diego to Stanford?
December 31st, 2014 at 4:36 PM ^
I've followed Harbaugh from Stanford/49ers. He's a weird guy from a coaching staff perspective, in that people will sometimes randomly be booted out of the inner circle for no apparent reason. For example, Shaw was the #1 offensive assistant...until, suddenly, he wasn't.
Drevno's the weirdest guy from this perspective. He got demoted in the SD --> Stanford transition. Goes to the 49ers. Randomly makes a lateral move from SF OL coach to USC OL coach. Now getting promoted? Very odd.
He had a so-so reputation as a recruiter for Stanford, as well.

coordinator his 1 year at USD. He had a better resume than Drevno, unusualy strong for a I-AA assistant. I could see him letting Drevno keep the OC title, but Shaw taking a lot of the responsibility. I don't think having both an OC and a passing game coordinator is common. Drevno perhaps functioned as the run game coordinator.
After one year with both on staff, he picked Shaw. It's hard to argue with his choice.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
I believe this is a very good hire.
I can't wait to see who the other assistants are.

Will there be a separate "Hello: Awesome Assistants" theme to go along with Searchbits and the usual Hello reports?
This is good stuff. USC looked good this year despite little experience on the line, and if Harbaugh wants him that's good enough for me.
I presume this also means Roman is out of the running? I also wonder what this does for the chances of Wheatley joining up.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
Goodbye theme as well. First up, Funk.
December 31st, 2014 at 4:43 PM ^
I would imagine that this is an additional opportunity for co-OC or assistant HC spot for him. Also allows for Moeller to come back if harbaugh was serious about that as well. I think this looks like a good hire logistically. If it doesn't work out well, I'm sure JH would demote him and find someone else to come in to take over as OC.

I'm not sure wheatley is the best available option, the bills were 25th in rushing and fred jackson led the team in rushing with 525 yards. In fact, I don't think they had a 100 yard rusher all season.

figures that Fred Jackson led the Bills in rushing...did that come straight from Fred? Did he run the ball like a mixture of Tyrone Wheately/Sam McGuffie/Chris Perry? I kid, I kid, not that Fred Jackson...
