The diagnosis doesn't matter, and the athletic trainers don't matter.
The coaches must be more restrictive than the trainers in this situation. Nuss, Khalid Hill, Justice Hayes, and the ref all at some point indicated that something was wrong. Even if Hoke did not see the play he should have seen someone else's reactions. This is pure recklesness. Period.
Even if Shane were not diagnosed with a concussion the protocol is very clear that a player who is suspected of a concussion must be evaluated. There is no doubt in anyone's mind, except for Hoke, that there was something wrong. In fact, Hoke's statements indicate he thinks that protocol is bullshit (Shane wants to be QB and he's tough...).
No one in the booth can fucking talk to Hoke because he doesn't wear a goddamn headset.
The fact that Hoke did not know about the concussion on Monday when there was a diagnosis on Sunday is just absolutely ridiculous. He knew he would have to talk about, Shane was in the facility on Sunday, you think he'd go figure out what the hell is going on. Hoke simply does not get it. It's pretty stunning.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:39 AM ^
He either flat out lied and thought he would get away with it or he didn't know one of his QBs was diagnosed with a concussion 12-24 hours after the diagnosis. Either situation means he needs to be removed, immediately.

Why would Hoke lie about it, knowing the information would be coming out shortly?
If there were some possibility he could get away with such a lie, the conspiracy theorists might have a feasible scenario. But there would be zero chance of getting away with said lie.
Makes no sense.

From the looks of it, I don't think Brian, who appears to have a good source on this, would agree.

as much as some may be skewing the "facts" to perhaps put more blame on Hoke than he deserves (for this one incident--and not his overall record), there are many, like you, who skew them the other way--looking to exonerate Hoke. While I believe Hoke's decision wasn't malicious, he is the head coach and mishandles this matter from the start to now. The fact that this story has legs nationally isn't irrelevant.
September 30th, 2014 at 10:22 AM ^
that people are plussing someone who says get off Hoke's back on this. Really?
The guy took a heavy blow to the chin on a terrible hit. As Brian said, it's not even about IF he had a concussion. The fact is that you take him out TO EVALUATE. The team failed to do this, and ultimate responsibility lies with Brady. If the schnoob had just gotten up and said THAT yesterday, for f*ck's sake. . . We made a GD mistake and I am sorry. I didn't see it and nobody told me, but he needed to come out, OBVIOUSLY. . .
September 30th, 2014 at 1:29 AM ^
So we have a consistent pattern of behavior here... lies and obfuscation concerning the health of student-athlete.
But we also have Hoke setting "Toug guy" environment that led to frost bite at Ball State.
Not to mention
1. The Funchess issue -- leaving Funchess in at ND on a gimpy ankle in garbage time
2. Leaving an obviously immobile Gardner in against OSU in 2013
3. Shane Morris injury
... "we didn't see the hit" is also equal to admiting "we don't watch our QB" ...
Get the lawyers drawing up the docs... This one's good as over.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:31 AM ^
4. Leaving Gardner in down 31-0 to get rocked and knocked unconscous on the last play.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:39 AM ^
Devin Gardner staying in against OSU last year was epic and heroic and damn near worked. We gave Hoke a lot of credit for having the guts to go for two at the end... at least until we learned about Bendan Gibbons' "family issue" that kept him out of the game. Leaving Funchess in against ND was just dumb. Leaving Shane Morris in was mind boggling. What's the thought there? "He's just playing so well, and we're only down by three touchdowns..."
September 30th, 2014 at 2:30 AM ^
Was Gardner administered concussion tests after the hit that rocked him vs. ND this year?

The press release says they diagnosed him with a concussion on Sunday, but nobody bothered to tell Hoke until after his press conference on Monday.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:21 AM ^
"I have had numerous meetings since Sunday morning to thoroughly review the situation that occurred at Saturday’s football game regarding student-athlete Shane Morris. I have met with those who were directly involved and who were responsible for managing Shane’s care and determining his medical fitness for participation."
Met with everybody but the head coach apparently. Amazing.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:32 AM ^
Hoke consistently lies, like he lied about the Gibbons thing. If he would just know how to speak clearly and intelligently, pehaps he could gather his thoughts and not make such an ass out of himself. Instead, he chooses to spew bullshit constantly.

BRANDON NEEDS TO STEP HIS COWARDLY ASS OUT OF THERE NOW!
1am and he releases THIS???
"...Following the game, a comprehensive concussion evaluation was completed and Shane has been evaluated twice since the game. As of Sunday, Shane was diagnosed with a probable, mild concussion, and a high ankle sprain. That probable concussion diagnosis was not at all clear on the field on Saturday or in the examination that was conducted post-game. Unfortunately, there was inadequate communication between our physicians and medical staff and Coach Hoke was not provided the updated diagnosis before making a public statement on Monday. This is another mistake that cannot occur again"
...some 12 hours after Coach Hoke was allowed to go in front of the press and dangle in the wind not knowing what Brandon failed to communicate to him? WHAT A F'D UP MESS WE HAVE LEADING MICHIGAN ATHLETICS!!! And yet he blames the physicians and medical staff for not informing Hoke. Just f'n unbelievable!
In no way am I absolving Hoke for his role, but this is so fuckin unbelievable that no writer could ever come up with such a script.

Unbelievable.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:04 AM ^
Yikes, Brandon threw his boy Hoke under the bus with this one
Tomorrow will be part 2 of the shit storm
September 30th, 2014 at 1:41 AM ^
You said it Carlos. I mentioned a few days ago that DB was revving up the bus to run Brady over. DB stands for DoucheBag as well in Brandon's case.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
"We are also examining how to reinforce our sideline communication processes and how decision will be made in orter to make sure that information regarding student-athlete availability to participate is communicated effectively amongst the medical team and to our coaches."
ie: Put on a fucking headset Hoke
September 30th, 2014 at 1:09 AM ^
That or improve wifi
September 30th, 2014 at 1:31 AM ^
September 30th, 2014 at 1:35 AM ^
Sorry, no can do. Hoke said as much today, he will not put one on....and then he added "Thank you".
The man is so stubborn to change and improve. So set in his BS ways. No wonder he is such a poor head coach.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
Brandon in release says Hoke was not provided updated diagnosis Mon but "As of Sunday, Shane was diagnosed with a probable, mild concussion" ....wut!

September 30th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
Just when you think it couldn't get any worse, the long awaited message is released at 1 AM. How unintelligent do they think everyone is?
September 30th, 2014 at 1:06 AM ^
Why in the heck would you release a statement at 1am? Even if it has good info, people will discuss that timing and thing something is fishy.
Is the AD's office busy doing something else so important that they couldn't release this at a normal hour? Is he in Hawaii so it's really 6pm their time? Does UM email servers hold on to emails for hours before sending them along?
Dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. Dumb.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:22 AM ^
Seriously, how can they NOT see this will backfire against them???
September 30th, 2014 at 1:06 AM ^
My goodness is this program a mess right now....
September 30th, 2014 at 1:06 AM ^
No one bothered to tell the head coach his starting QB had a concussion for over a day?
That doesn't pass the straight face test.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:29 AM ^
September 30th, 2014 at 1:41 AM ^
I don't think its atypical to not exhibit symptoms until a day later, but I think his point is that there is no conceivable reason that Hoke should not have been informed of his QBs injury status, especially when its a national news story. Just doesn't pass the smell test for me either.
September 30th, 2014 at 7:30 AM ^
Seems like the kind of thing where their initial huddle let them to try not telling anyone to see if it would blow over, since it probably only got worse, they came back a second time and said "OKAY OKAY....we know"
