One Frame At A Time: Appalachian State
and thus ended a really stupid debate about jersey number deservedness
I keep trying to put words here but the GIF is just looping endlessly in the editor and I no longer feel words are really necessary.
Gleeful cackling, on the other hand, seems totally appropriate. The rest of the ASU game in GIFs, which I swear isn't entirely devoted to Devin Funchess, is after the jump.
[JUMP, but probably not over two defenders because that's really hard unless, well, you're Devin Funchess.]
As usual, click the links/stills to open each GIF in a lightbox, and don't forget to vote for your favorite at the end of the post.
HONORABLE MENTION
Run blocking! (Includes Mason Cole doing serious work.)
The most anticipated and exciting six-yard punt return in school history.
JEHU COMIN'.
Denard laughs, the sun takes a day off.
NICE HIT, DELONTE.
While it didn't count, Wormley's second consecutive sack lives on in our collective memory.
10. Brady Hoke Smells Like America
ESPN ran a segment on College Gameday of head coaches reading mean tweets about themselves. It's perfect.
A certain perpetually aggrieved blogger will breathlessly post this because self-deprecating humor is advanced, man.
9. SIMMS MCELFRESH
If anything, I should probably rank this higher.
8. Conditioning Is Important (Blocking, Too)
As it turns out, it's way easier to make players miss at the second level when (1) you're at a reasonable playing weight, and (2) a second level exists.
In more HOORAY FOR HOLES*, here's Green scampering for 56 yards before even getting touched by a defender.
*Uh, working title.
7. Taco Meats Quarterback
Put that center on skates. Pretty cool replay angle here, too:
I really hope he just screamed "TACOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO."
6. Have Yourself A De'Veon
Ankle tackles just aren't going to cut it.
No, seriously. You're gonna hurt yourself.
ASU safety vs. Kyle Kalis was probably not a fair matchup.
5. A Punt Block TD In The First Game, As Is Tradition
Look at this still from Bryan Fuller. Then note that Mike McCray (#9), not Royce Jenkins-Stone, got his hand on the ball. Rather athletic play, I'd say.
The finish wasn't bad, either:
No idea how Gedeon kept his knees off the ground, but I'll be damned, he really did.
4. DG Does DG Things
Aw dang, it's a sack. Way short of the first down, at least. Okay, four-yard gain, nice job.
Wait, how did you get there?
3. Wear #2, Unlock Tackling Bonus
Thunk.
2. Spot-On Alan Branch Impression
KABOOM.
FRAMES OF THE GAME: ALL FUNCHESS EVERYTHING
They bought the fake.
Don't tackle him low.
Welp, running out of options here, Coach.
"Remember that one time..."
"Yes, it literally happened five minutes ago."
"Sir, we're gonna need to check you for illegal rocket boots. And stick-um. And alien DNA."

Lots of win from that game, and some tough choices among these GIFs. I chose the leaping Funchess grab over two hapless defenders. What put it over the top (pun intended) for me was the fact that it is looking like Nuss has realized he has his very own Megatron and plans to use him as such. Duh!
The Peppers punt return had me on the edge of my seat, I must admit. That dude is going to break one before too long.
Chesson being Chesson was a great clip. I love how he plays the game.

I really thought that the Henry hit was going to put their QB out.

But I don't seem to remember DG protecting the ball as much when he was about to get hit while running the ball last year as he did Saturday.
Attention to detail. Not turning the ball over.

R****d is not PC anymore. That went out back when the Goonies came out. Insert another word like Dunderhead.

I watched the Taco Charleton broadcast loop several times ... that was great! More of that, please ... every game!

I don't know, the still makes it look like McCray didn't get a hand on it, and the gif clearly shows the ball completely missing Jenkins-Stone's hands.

Thing's don't change their trajectory like that in mid air unless that air pocket directly behind his hand has the viscosity of maple syrup somehow.

In "Run blocking!", the streamer on the FG pole blows out marking right where #4 just ran.
It's the details that make things great.

Yep, that was Molkian. Almost like he was recruited to be a zone blocking ballet artiste...

I especially like the event staff member's "I be like dang" squat on Funchess' leaping TD grab.

During the honorable mention of Cole's blocking, Jehu was lined up as a TE and blocked like one too.

I liked the first De'Veon Smith TD run, the one without Kalis. It just looks like when he's about 10 yards out or so he decided he was scoring, put his head down, and made it happen.

the one with Kalis. It has been just a bit too long since we have really seen a runner follow a blocker.

I don't remember these words ever being mentioned in connection with a Michigan game at any point last year, not for Kalis or any other interior lineman.

Taco meats quarterback... I love taco meat.
Honorable mention: Have yourself a Deveon. I love the way he finishes that run in particular.

Welp, that's one way to win the Michigan drill -- just push the lineman right into the ball carrier and pancake them both.
Hat tip to McElfresh -- dude's a baller. He's welcome to transfer anytime. We've got a crowded receiver corps but we'll find a place for Drew Dileo 2.0. He was also the guy who cut block Peppers (I don't like that he injured his ankle but it was a clean play).
Who was that guy who chased down Green on his big run? He chased down Green from the opposite side of the field! App State's secondary was questionable but that guy had some serious speed.
The linemen blocks 20 yards downfield were just ridiculous in a good way.
No comment on Funchess because that monster speaks for himself. I mean, what do you say about Godzilla? You just yell "GOJIRAAAA" and point in stunned awe at the destruction.
