Harbaugh and Chargers are in “striking distance” of getting a deal done, per Mike Garafolo

per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media

Harbaugh wanted the job last year, but it wasn’t open. He’s currently interviewing for the job a second time. As one league source tells PFT, “He wants it.”

Harbaugh is in LA today for another meeting with the team.

Let's hope PFT's reporting is wrong again.

Colorado gets it. Yes, it is possible that he loves coaching at Michigan and yet wants another shot at a Super Bowl. But he can't do both. It's not like he's been interviewing for other college coaching jobs over the past couple years. He has a clear interest in exploring NFL opportunities and he's a proven NFL coach. What remains to be seen is if he can come to terms with an NFL team.

Ill probably be the only one but I'm rooting for the Chargers to go 0-17 next year. I love Jim but I officially hate LA.

At this point I'm ready to move on. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate what he's done and I won't be upset if he stays, but I'm honestly tired of this happening every offseason now. Not a single person can convince me this doesn't hurt recruiting, and that every program in America isn't using this against us on the recruiting trail. As long as Harbaugh stays, the ammunition he provides to everyone to use on us is literally infinite.

If he gets the offer, at this point he just needs to take it. Sign the deal, promote Sherrone, and let the man get to work.

He's gone, but my guess is the announcement happens AFTER he gets a chance to inform his current team. My guess is he flies back to AA tonight, has a team meeting in the morning, and then allows the Chargers to announce the news to insiders and media.

There is no way Harbaugh agrees to leave Michigan for another job without talking to The Team, The Team, The Team first.

Maybe his family would prefer to live in California? I know that's got to be a part of the decision making process and I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

Ok, cool, can this shit just wrap up please. Im personally indifferent to it all.  He did it all here, thank you coach, get your job and good luck to you sir......hire SM and lets get on to the next era.

In a very small way, assuming he goes, glad this continual January rumor mill exhausting shit will be over.

Striking distance - has some room for interpretation.

The distance from Boston to Los Angeles is shorter than what an ICBM can travel.

So - theoretically - if Harbaugh is in Boston - and - he was an ICBM - Los Angeles would be "within striking distance".   However, in fact, those two metropolitan areas are not close to each other.

Obviously wish Jim nothing but the best but not sure it will end up being the wisest move long term. I mean on the plus he seems like to like California and you have Herbert, but a bad ownership reputation, being way down on the list of teams people care about in LA and the Chargers having to shed a crapload of cap are not small negatives.

My .02 is that Jim would have probably stayed away from the NFL if the Big 10 didn't take a shit on him and Michigan backed him up when the team needed him the most.

He won the NC for himself and those players but it may be possible that Warde burned the bridge between them and thats why he's holding Michigan hostage with every day that goes by with uncertainty.  I really do hope he wouldnt leave the team in shambles like Saban did to bama, and Jim will leave them in the best situation possible as far as having coaches in place.  It's not like recruiting was one of their strengths but how bad will it get now?  I see #15-25th ranked classes in the future.

I'll be honest. Was fully expecting to read news of a Michigan ''Team Meeting" this morning w/ Coach Harbaugh officially breaking the news to his team that he'll be leaving the program to go back to the NFL.

Coach Harbaugh is really gonna keep dragging this out as long as he can, isn't he?

I'm officially at the anger part of this grief journey. Hindsight being what it is and all, but I think Michigan after the Washington game should have offered Jim their best contract and said sign it or shop the NFL but we need to move forward. This one foot out the door looking for a perfect goldilocks situation or coming back to Michigan as plan B. That is what's best for Jim but not what's best for the University of Michigan. The fact that this program hasn't been able to parlay the past three seasons into recruiting success because of lack of coaching stability at the top is miss management by Ward and the Regents. Thank you Jim for what you accomplished this season but taking a large part of the coaching staff with you to LA at this point in the cycle is only good for him and will be a huge setback for the team. I'm over it and hope he leaves today so we can all move on with a leader that wants to be here.
