Brad Galli interview with Kirk Herbstreit: Why Kirk wore the number 4 as a player
I am posting this because Kirk dishes out something I don't know if any of us knew. At least I didn't know and that Kirk wore the #4 because he grew up a fan of Jim Harbaugh when he played at Michigan. This nuggie of info won't sit well with the unhinged portion of the sucknut fan base. But, it did give me a whole new appreciation for Herbie.
As you can see, I can't embed the video as WXYZ disable the ability to do so. Here's the link to the less than 7 minute video.

And work won't mind that your HR department won't mind that you are using work time to watch this as they know your productivity will skyrocket tomorrow after Michigan wins the CFP national title.
GO BLUE!

After his comments about the differences between OSU and UM team culture a few days ago, this will only serve to harden Buckeye hatred of him. He is probably as welcome in Columbus as Pete Thamel is in Ann Arbor.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:03 AM ^
As much as I hate Herbstreit, at least he has the balls to show his face in Ann Arbor. Pete Thamel is probably in hiding still.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:34 AM ^
apparently, herbstreit told galli about the #4 harbaugh connection in the past.
and i found this story about herbstreit being recruited by bo, which was super interesting
January 8th, 2024 at 11:29 AM ^
That recruiting story is great. Thanks! I loved the part where Bruce came to see Bo when he was hurting about being fired. It's good to see these people as humans.
January 8th, 2024 at 12:26 PM ^
I think that Herbie's excommunication is pretty much complete!
January 8th, 2024 at 6:19 PM ^
Herbstreit actually said “I grew up a Mi—- a Harbaugh fan.” He self-censored himself knowing what that would do to his relationship with the bucknuts. Very interesting!
January 8th, 2024 at 10:03 AM ^
Oh, 11W has more hate for Herbstreit today than we have for... I can't come up with a name. As opposed to Herbstreit for Ohio, Thamel didn't play many downs in an M uniform, to my knowledge. They feel totally betrayed.
And it's all condemnation for Herbstreit not being vocal about the only reason M has been good is because of Stallions. They are desperately clinging to that narrative and ready to sacrifice their first-born to see W win tonight.
Yeah, I'm overly zealous about all things Michigan. But the current state of their fanbase, as represented online I will grant you, is totally off the rail.

Oh, 11W has more hate for Herbstreit today than we have for... I can't come up with a name.
Michael Rosenberg.

Drew Sharp?
January 8th, 2024 at 11:36 AM ^
In retrospect, Rosenberg was annoyance compared to whoever activated the OUTRAGE this year and Tony Petitti for further inflaming it. That fucker made Buckeye/Sparty/what have you "logic" totally circular. "I am OUTRAGED by this behavior and DEMAND strong action!" "OK, so how is advanced in person scouting such a big deal?" "A THREE GAME SUSPENSION PROVES IT! Now I will stick my fingers in my ears and chant 'CHEATERS' when you come at me with this 'facts and logic' stuff."

January 8th, 2024 at 10:14 AM ^
I saw some recent CFP fluff piece that talked about "who was your favorite Wolverine growing up" and some guys said they weren't fans of Michigan growing up. It works both ways and only goes to further illustrate how insufferably detached from reality that whole fanbase is.
January 8th, 2024 at 9:53 AM ^
Guys, stop. I can't get any work done.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:15 AM ^
It's like the day of (or before) The Game all over again. But better.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:23 AM ^
I've always been thankful that The Game seems to be almost always at noon and of course on a Saturday. This situation - a Monday, kicking off the work week, with the game at night - ayayay. Help!
I told myself that I needed to save the money and to get work done by not going to Houston. I guess I'll have to take 50% success.
January 8th, 2024 at 11:11 AM ^
I never understood why you can't put the national title game on a Friday.
I get that Saturdays and Sundays are off-limits this time of year due to the NFL Playoffs, but would it really be that hard to move the game to a Friday evening, when almost no one is working the next day and you can get a lot more eyeballs on the game for a lot longer into the evening? Wouldn't that be what the big-wig TV execs ultimately want?
And then don't even get me started about Final Four national-title tip-offs seemingly always happening at 9:17pm EST, and on a Monday no less.....
January 8th, 2024 at 11:40 AM ^
One good thing about being my age is that you're in that sweet spot where you're not getting up at 4:50 for work (35 years of that) but not dead.
January 8th, 2024 at 2:19 PM ^
All those Quaker Oats will push off dying for a bit. Good on you.
January 8th, 2024 at 3:21 PM ^
Damn straight. Fun fact: the real Brimley was in his 50s when he started making those ads. He's one of those old early guys.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:01 AM ^
oh if work hasn't already blocked mgoblog with my current amount of work-time usage, they'll never block it.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:07 AM ^
I think that any "dislike" for Herbstreit around here stemmed back to the early (and apparently incorrect) reporting that Miles had taken the Michigan job, which certainly resulted in him not taking the job if he was going to.
He was also on the call for multiple brutal Michigan losses including the depants-ing by Bama in 2012, several brutal Penn State losses in Happy Valley and particularly crushing defeats against OSU and in the rain game against State. It was basically guilt by association. He has never been really bias against Michigan, except to say "Michigan is losing" when Michigan is obviously losing.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:22 AM ^
I guess it's natural because of his ties to OSU, but he references that program alot during broadcasts that have nothing to do with them. I find that annoying.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:35 AM ^
Herbstreit is perfectly fine when calling a game not involving OSU. He's normally pretty fair to us.
He's also OK when calling an OSU game when he is upset with the program. He clearly isn't too fond of where they're headed now, so he's not going to sing their praises too much.
It was another story during the Tressel and Meyer eras at OSU. He had a hard time hiding his OSU love on the air. Worse, ESPN kept assigning him to call their games. During that time I couldn't take too much of him.
January 8th, 2024 at 3:48 PM ^
At least Herbie isn’t Joey Galloway…
January 8th, 2024 at 10:11 AM ^
He’s actually trying to rally his Buckeyes to get their culture better. A lot of that was done by many of our ex-players when to were struggling trying to get us better to beat the Bucks, you sure don’t hear from those ex-players now, because obviously we’re right where they want us beating the Bucks.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:23 AM ^
well played.
I first read the title and I'm like why the F are we talking about herbstreit. Then it immediately made sense.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:24 AM ^
The Bucknuts chased Herbs out of C-Bus years ago.
And all years years I thought he wore number 4 because he was a fan of Chris Webber.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:28 AM ^
"Herbstreit was the first player to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes after the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988."
Awesome.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:31 AM ^
Both Chris Speilman and Herbstreit, their hearts were in AA. Spielman was forced by his dad to go to OSU, and I don't think we offered Herbie.
EDIT: just read the book except here, and I was wrong. We did offer Herbie. And his heart was in Columbus but head in AA. That was a good read.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:36 AM ^
Didn't he have to move away from Columbus a few years ago to avoid the local anger and vitriol?
January 8th, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
And yet, 2 of his kids went to OSU and they still hate him. That fan base is delusional, toxic, and full of buckeyes.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:42 AM ^
So it's not because his passes were so wildly inaccurate he'd have to yell "fore" like a golfer to protect spectators?
January 8th, 2024 at 10:43 AM ^
He caught him self by saying “ I grew up a Mich…Jim Harbaugh fan and I wore number 4”… That was more than just a slip. He’s gonna get pounded for that.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:59 AM ^
At this point he should just switch allegiance. There are probably more Michigan people that appreciate him than Ohio State people.
January 8th, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
Well he can't do it right now, he'd just look like a front-runner. But one of these days we'll see Herbstreit drop to his knees in a forest clearing and rip open his Oxford to reveal a Block M carved into his chest. The Anti-Scarlet Letter.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:59 AM ^
If I were a Buckeye, I wouldn't have an issue with that. He obviously loves OSU now.
Jim Brandstatter grew up a Spartan fan, IIRC, but he's certainly not going to wear green and white now.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:56 AM ^
I like Herbie. There I said it.
I lived in Dayton Ohio for a few of years. As a lark one night, a few people where I worked decided we should attend the local high school football game. The local high school where I lived was the Centerville Elks. The quarterback was . . . Kirk Herbstreit.
Centerville won. I don't think Herbstreit attempted a single pass. I still have the program from that game. If I ever see Herbie at a game, I'll get him to sign it.
January 8th, 2024 at 10:57 AM ^
-1 for "nuggie."
I'M KIDDING. I CAN'T NEG ANYONE RIGHT NOW AAAAAAAAAH!
January 8th, 2024 at 11:53 AM ^
Kirk is definitely one of the best and normal buckeyes. I never remember kicking us while we were down during the hoke and RR years. He's one of the least clickbait analysts out there.
January 8th, 2024 at 2:38 PM ^
Your base Buckeye fan is a lunatic that does not live in reality and can’t understand taking an unbiased or even realistic view when it comes to life as it relates to college football.
I mean they actually Grey out anything that is even mildly critical of the OSU program at eleven warriors.
Herbie is an OSU guy yet they can’t understand that he chose a profession where your somewhat unbiased view, expertise, integrity elevate you as a college football analyst.
