Report: Mike Hart interviewing for Indiana HC job
November 28th, 2023 at 5:43 PM ^
He could easily steal our signs 😱.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
That's sadly the first thign I thought. If these schools really beleived we were winning because of cheating, they aren't trying to make our rb coach their head coach.
That would suck big time because Michigan's resurrgence started with Hart coming from IU in January 21'. That said, he's a rb coach here and if IU is going to offer him the HC job, how could he turn that down?
November 28th, 2023 at 9:01 PM ^
Wasn't there some buzz that IU (and Minnesota) weren't part of the CHEATERS!!! brigade?
November 28th, 2023 at 10:15 PM ^
Nothing outrageous there from Allen. Basically says he doesn’t know enough to judge.
"I'm not saying they did – I don't know what's going on there. But I just know, I just want to say we need to protect the integrity of the game. That's my stance on that, and I think that's important."
November 29th, 2023 at 3:43 AM ^
You are (were) in a conference with Ohio State and this is the time to 'protect the integrity of the game'...
hahahaha
November 28th, 2023 at 5:43 PM ^
I hope he gets it. He deserves a shot especially there.
He is as much an Indiana Man as he is a Michigan Man with the time he spent there.
And just think if he does get the job and is successful in turning the program around
November 28th, 2023 at 5:48 PM ^
Give him a shot, he is a good coach and mentor
November 28th, 2023 at 6:56 PM ^
No, he isn’t. He is a Michigan legend as a player. No way is he an Indiana man as much as a Michigan man.
November 28th, 2023 at 7:05 PM ^
He made a lot of Indiana connections when he was with the Colts and IU. I was in Dayton during that time period and coworkers of mine from Indy area ended up becoming friends with him- they were native Hoosiers and said he became pretty in with the Indy area HS coaches and ingratiated himself with the community in his sort time there.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
I respectfully disagree. It’s like the difference between your undergrad and grad schools. The allegiance to your undergrad is usually stronger 90+% of the time.
Hart’s professional - a solid leader, coach, man, etc. He’ll be successful wherever he goes.
I wish him well - but, am selfish too. I like him on Michigan’s sideline.
Go Blue!
P.S. - if offers are extended, I hope the effective date is January 11th.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:44 PM ^
Figured Hart and/or Moore might be interviewed when Tom Allen was fired.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:57 PM ^
I think Moore might be holding out for something a bit more substantial. What that would be I do not know.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:25 PM ^
It's crazy to think about it but if Brent Venables had had another lousy year at Oklahoma, Sherrone might have been interviewing for that job right now.
November 28th, 2023 at 7:08 PM ^
And if Venables struggles his 1st two years in the SEC, it could become open.
Venables went from Clemson to a job like OU because he was part of a then dynastic program. Moore will have better jobs open if Michigan has 1-2 more years of success. OU level jobs. Not IU, Syracuse, or Duke level jobs. It could be more advantageous to wait than to take the first P5 opportunity available.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:44 PM ^
Nooooooo!
November 28th, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
It makes sense that Mike would interview, but how much sense does it make that he'd take the job? That's coaching purgatory, just like most of the rest of the B1G West. I'd go to a mid major school and win there, become the hot name, and pick a good Power 5 gig where you've got a fighting chance at getting good players. If he goes to Indiana he'll end up just another guy.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:55 PM ^
He’d absolutely take it, and should. It’s rare for a position coach to get offered a B10 head job, and he’s never mentioned re other head coaching jobs. He’d been an idiot to pass this up. That said, this could be a courtesy interview.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:01 PM ^
And let's not discount the idea that the "courtesy" can be a two way street. If Hart has never interviewed for a HC job, and I imagine he has not, then this would be a great training exercise for future interviews.
November 28th, 2023 at 7:12 PM ^
ADs and President's don't give courtesy interviews, unless someone else they want to interview or respect says "you should really interview this guy." Sometimes that gives them additional perspective on what to look for in a hire. It makes sense to go on those interviews because when someone calls those ADs and President's up for tips, they say "we really loved this guy. You should call him." But I don't think those are courtesy interviews. In all cases they are interested in more than the courtesy.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:33 PM ^
They just paid Tom Allen $20M to go away.
Any whippersnapper would take that job in a heartbeat.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:18 PM ^
Actually, $15.5M, but your point stands.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:38 PM ^
300 400 Thousand or 3 4 Million. I'll take the 1st choice says no one
November 28th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
You coach there for 3 years at even $4 million a year (idk what the Indiana HC position pays) and you’re sitting pretty no matter what happens. I doubt he’s even making $1 million a year rn. That would be a HUGE change in his financials
November 28th, 2023 at 10:59 PM ^
That's the thing though, if the bigwest is coaching purgatory, then all it takes is one HC to come in and do just a little bit better job than Kirk Ferentz to win the division. Two seasons in the big championship, even if they get blown out by Michigan twice, and actual ranked teams will be calling with monster offers.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
I'd love for him to stay at UM, but I'll root for Coach Hart wherever he goes!
November 28th, 2023 at 5:46 PM ^
If he leaves, is it worthwhile to kick the tires on Thomas Wilcher? He's unemployed now and probably still has great relationships with the other high schools in the state. Just a thought.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:00 PM ^
I agree about the HS connections, but Wilcher is pretty long in the tooth and has never coached at the college level. (I'm not counting whatever he had going at MSU.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Wilcher
I think Michigan could do better.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:39 PM ^
No thank you on Wilcher
November 28th, 2023 at 5:46 PM ^
I thought about this a day or two ago and it makes sense despite Hart never having been a coordinator. I'd hate to lose him but most everyone in the coaching profession wants to move up so I certainly wouldn't hold it against him. Someone in another thread made a comment about Gary Moeller taking the IL job in the late 70's and my concern would be that IU is currently a no-win situation like IL back in the day. But you never know and Mike Hart seems like a good man and a good leader.
November 28th, 2023 at 9:48 PM ^
Of course, after UofI fired Mo, Bo rehired him here, vowed eternal enmity toward the Illinois, and then Mo became HC here when Bo retired. Had a good run til you know, and recruited the heart of Lloyd's 97 champs. So, it wasn't a total disaster
November 28th, 2023 at 10:22 PM ^
https://mvictors.com/a-seventy-burger-this-week-in-michigan-football-history/
Bo was so pissed at Illinois for firing Mo that he hung 70 on them, and Bo almost never ran up the score.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:48 PM ^
Kane Wommack is getting that job.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:49 PM ^
I was counting on him taking a co-OC position with the team if Sherone were to leave, but I could hardly begrudge him for this opportunity.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:57 PM ^
He's the same age as Sherone, so he probably doesn't see a pathway to HC if that's his end goal
November 28th, 2023 at 6:41 PM ^
This comment made me think what an embarrassment of riches we have in assistant coaches!
November 28th, 2023 at 5:53 PM ^
He should take it. Great opportunity.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:55 PM ^
Good for Coach Hart
But I really hope he stays in Ann Arbor
However this is probably inevitable
November 28th, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
They would be foolish to not interview Hart and he would be foolish to not interview. Needless to say I'd love to see him stay. It won't hurt his value either way.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:00 PM ^
it will be fine
November 28th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
Be a real shame to lose him; would love to see him land an OC role at a better school first. But, B10 HC job hard to turn down.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:06 PM ^
No Coach Hart, don't go!
November 28th, 2023 at 6:07 PM ^
A sign of a very strong program, is if the assistant coaches are sought after by other power 5 schools.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:29 PM ^
Totally agree. While it sucks to lose coaches to other schools it's far worse to have coaches that nobody else wants.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:07 PM ^
We could use more big ten coaches that support Michigan and don't want to see Harbaugh drawn and quartered.
November 28th, 2023 at 7:11 PM ^
Yes, and we could develop a symbiotic relationship with IU like OSU and MSU used to have to screw over...Purdue.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:08 PM ^
Courtesy interview or not, good luck to that man. He is a Michigan legend, Michigan man, and deserves the best! He's been great here and I hope he stays and gets a raise but if a HC gig opens up and they offer, you take it.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:10 PM ^
I'd obviously prefer he stays here but I hope he gets it if he wants it. That dude is as Michigan as they come, he deserves great things happening for him.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:11 PM ^
Indiana will be lucky if he takes the job. I don't think the fit could be much better for them.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:15 PM ^
That site sounds like pure speculation. But it’s on a message board so it must be true.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:16 PM ^
Wow!
Hate to lose him but it'd be great for him and Indiana.
