Unverified Voracity Is Whatever About Suspension Comment Count

Sponsor note. Hey, folks: Tom Brady is on the hunt for the biggest Michigan fan other than Seth. We posted a set of trivia questions from Autograph a few weeks back and we're back for more. First, check out the Leaderboard from round one, which we'll be updating all year.

Then hit up the second set of trivia questions, which we'll be posting weekly through the end of September. Our friends at Autograph and Valiant will offer access to purchase unique rewards and experiences throughout the season based on your performance and participation.

This set of trivia questions closes Friday at 5 PM, so get on it.

I mean, whatever? I suppose I have to dredge up an opinion about Michigan self-imposing a three-game gameday-only suspension on Jim Harbaugh. Here goes: darn it.

The only part of this that matters is that it might piss off Harbaugh to the point where he gets more serious about going to the NFL. You or I could coach Michigan against ECU, UNLV, and… whoever is the last nonconference opponent. Ah. Bowling Green. Anyway: you or I could guide Michigan to three wins in those games. (Mel Tucker, on the other hand…)

So on one level it's smart to get this junk out of the way now because Texas, an actual power conference opponent, is on the schedule next year. On another level it's deeply annoying to cave to an NCAA kangaroo court that is busy violating its own guidelines because of what's clearly a personal vendetta against a coach who can't be bothered to pretend they're relevant anymore. There's a lot of sturm und drang on the message boards about this because of the latter, but… this does not matter. Michigan's chances of success this season have not been altered even 0.01%.

So, whatever. Double whatever.

[After THE JUMP: OSU's got an issue or two]

Trouble in paradise? Michigan had a quarterback battle go into the season last year, but that was a guy who'd won the Big Ten getting passed by JJ McCarthy. This one seems a bit more ominous:

This is a bit sunnier take from Day than his previous comment on the QB battle:

"I don't think it's right now we have two guys who are just blowing it out of the water and you're like 'Oh my God, I don't know who's gonna play,'" Day said. "But it's also not like they're not doing well either...Now, were just looking for the consistency."

Seems like whoever it is will be a major step down from CJ Stroud. Here's to seeing OSU's offense outside of the SP+ top ten. Or at least somewhere other than first.

The pads go on. Jadyn Davis experienced a steady slide over the course of shorts-and-skeleton season. But maybe he's one of them gamer guys:

Providence Day looked the part of No. 1 team in North Carolina in a 42-35 victory over Northwestern (SC) on Saturday night. Providence Day held a commanding 42-21 lead with eight minutes left in the game and Northwestern scored two late touchdowns. …

Providence Day was led by outstanding performances by 4-star Michigan quarterback commit Jadyn Davis and 4-star North Carolina wide receiver commit Jordan Shipp. Davis' final stat line was 24 completions of 35 attempts for 456 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions.

A fair chunk of this highlight reel is Davis doing stuff:

Anonymous NIL takes. On3 has series of anonymous coach quote articles, which are always pretty interesting. This one focuses on how NIL has affected college basketball recruiting:

A Coach in the Big East: “The ‘process’ begins (and almost ends) with the financial benefit of the school. If it was even part of the process, it was nearly last (or non-existent) pre-NIL. The money/NIL has no equivalent now in the process, and there is almost no way to overcome a substandard ‘offer.’ …

A Coach in the A10: “NIL has significantly changed how we recruit. If we know early on that the decision is all bout money, we may choose to move on. We have a solid collective; however, we don’t think we want to ‘outbid’ anyone. We think our program’s history and the university have a lot to offer; unfortunately, a lot of kids, agents, and advisors only care about the bottom line. I think recruiting is mostly about two things, 1) role definition and 2) NIL, “Will I play and how much will I get paid?

“I think the common thought in college is you want to get old and stay old. But I think there’s a valuable opportunity for mid-majors to get slightly better talent than before the portal era. I believe you take the guys that can help you win. They can come from a local high school or be playing 4.000 miles away if they can help you and fit your culture, you take them.”

I assume this is less drastic of a change in football since there are fewer football recruits who are obvious program-changers than in basketball, what with 85+ man rosters versus 13. I do agree with "get old and stay" old after Michigan's experience with Moussa Diabate, Caleb Houstan, Jett Howard, and Frankie Collins. In all four of those cases Michigan spent a bunch of minutes developing substandard players* only for all of them to bolt. They're probably going to get more out of Nimari Burnett than any of them.

*[This may be somewhat controversial but Michigan was ~7.5 points better per 100 possessions with Howard off the floor last year, and Howard was probably the best of the four.]

Football is back soon, and it brings with it Indiana Signmaking. Say what you want about the Crossroads of America, but never say they can't apply pigment to a large piece of cardboad:

They'll always have that, and when you have signs who needs bowl bids?

Etc.: Proposed prices for first round playoff games next year have yet to find a broadcaster because the prices are sky-high. CBB burnout at all time high. McCarthy, Zinter, Jenkins, Corum, Edwards make Dane Brugler's top 50 prospects for the upcoming draft.

Day typically waits til the 20th or so of August to name a starter.  That being said, Fields and Stroud were clearly getting the most snaps with the ones in practice, so the actual starter was no secret to the insider types who cover Ohio State.

This year, the same guys who had inside scoops on Stroud and Fields say that Day legit doesn't know who to pick this year, because both have been up and down all through camp.  And they've split reps with the ones almost 50/50, which indicates a true competition

Remember when everyone said Tom Herman was better than Urban Meyer and the brains behind the program and he would potentially keep the program going on the same level and blah blah blah. Does anyone really expect Ryan Day to keep OSU anywhere near where Urban Meyer was? OSU had the fortune of back to back legendary coaches and we take for granted that it's the program, not the coach.

8-4 this year.

Day is nowhere near the coach and program head that Meyer was. But he was left on third base and has done pretty well with what he inherited. OSU is a place that recruits itself, so as long as he keeps getting elite talent (and I don't see any reason that would stop) he will keep the powerhouse going. 10/11 win seasons will continue to be the norm, with the former being a 'down' year for them.

On the heels of Tressell and Meyer they are a freight train running away at breakneck speed, hard to see how you stop that given all the momentum on and off the field they've had the past 20 years.

UNLESS he keeps losing to Michigan AND missing the playoff it's hard for me to see OSU taking a step back. Maybe that happens and maybe they hire a Luke Fickell again but I don't see how OSU doesn't remain a national power regardless of who's in charge.

My general thought is that every coach has a career arc, and its really hard to understand exactly what that arc is.  For example, we hired RichRod on the wrong end of his career arc.  On the flip side, OSU hired both Tressel and Urban while their respective career arcs were on the upswing.  It's a little early to determine where OSU is at on the Ryan Day arc.

But I will say this, Urban is way past is prime now - him coming back to a college head coach job will not be great IMO.

I don't think enough people realize this. The only thing Meyer might still bring is recruiting and program/organization. Back when he was at Utah and Florida he was a bright offensive mind, still on the early wave of spread with his particular flavor (power spread). Early on at OSU he still had it going pretty well, but by midway through his tenure there his offense had become pretty stale (although most teams were still so outmatched that it didn't matter). Don Brown had his system completely figured out, so much so that losing their starting QB in the 2017 game was the best thing that happened to them that day (if Barrett doesn't get hurt, keeping Haskins on the bench, I think we hold on). What really saved Urban late in his time at OSU was bringing in Wilson and Day and letting them revamp the offense from power running spread to wide open passing attack.

The long an the short of it that if he does come back to college, I think his success will be dependent on getting a top notch OC...

I disagree. His 12-0 2012 team beat us by 5 (26-21), and was losing at halftime. In 2013, against his #2 ranked team, we had a 2-point conversion try that would have given us the lead with a minute to play (42-41 final). Even against the shit show that was Hoke's last year, 2014, he still only won by 2 TDs (42-28).

Against Harbaugh, he did get a big win in 2015, but with our injuries at DT, his power spread was perfect for running us over, no adjustments required. And then we had 2016 (refs stole the game from us), and 2017, when he was only saved by losing JT Barrett to injury. Doesn't scream great prep to me.

The difference in 2018 and 2019, when there truly was great prep, was Wilson and Day taking control of the offense. They were the difference, not Urban...

Harbaugh to the NFL is always going to be a thing due to his track record. If the Chargers opens up I would be nervous. Chargers may want an experienced hand instead of a Ben Johnson.

If Harbaugh leaves I have to assume that Moore is the guy. Hopefully, there is a contingency plan in place.

In theory that would be nice to see but I don't like the idea of OSU being the underdog and ruining our season cuz that's all that would matter to them at that point.

That said, I'd be shocked if they had more than one loss coming in. Who else stands a chance outside of PSU? And they still get them at The Shoe.

What about "Signs at Indiana"?  I made this one last year, and it did not help make friends.

Notes:  1) I'm not in the pic, when your friend's 15yo is 6'7", he can hoist it higher. 2) I actually do like Johnny, and have several CDs.

McCord may not be OSU's starter, but ESPN already thinks he's a Heisman dark-horse:

Also fun to see the hype for Joe Milton (again) and whoever's next at QB for Georgia over JJ. It's just different down south.

Would love nothing more than for OSU to have a legit QB problem this year. That said, I'm pretty skeptical they don't at least have a leader in the club house when it comes to that position. This smells more to me like "we want to keep both guys so we have depth at the position. If we don't name a starter until the season we will keep both guys on campus."

To me, a team doesn't have a 2 QB problem until one guy gets pulled in a meaningful game in hopes that the other guy can give you a "spark" or something. Think Shea in the 2019 Wisconsin game where he gets pulled and DMC comes in (only to get head hunted). The pulling of Shea was an acknowledgement that "we have a QB problem."

Until OSU pulls say McCord after a bad pick in the 3rd quarter in a tight ND game, I won't believe they have a legit QB problem.
