META: Tony Garcia added to troll/no sharing list

Submitted by Seth on January 29th, 2023 at 12:14 PM

It bothers me too that the Detroit Free Press hires professional trolls instead of just covering Michigan, but they're still trolls, and sharing their content is still trolling. I guarantee you will never, ever have to take a thing Tony Garcia says seriously. If your mom is like "Did you see what the Freep said?" tell her you guarantee she will never, ever have to take something Tony Garcia says seriously.

The whole troll/no sharing list is dumb and posters shouldn’t need to keep up to date with who can and can’t be shared on here because of some arbitrary list composed of people a couple of posters don’t like.

Let people post stuff and if it gets neg’d so be it.

The problem with your take is this is a business and not just a free forum. It is not hard to know the rules if you want to use it. If it is too hard just don't start threads/share links and you'll almost never have an issue. That still allows you to enjoy 99% of the features on an amazing free site dedicated to one of your passions.

TLDR it is not that hard.

It is not hard to know the rules if you want to use it

Is that so?

I fell afoul of rules I wasn't aware of with consequences I didn't expect on a post I made in good faith.  I am sanguine about the whole thing, but disagree that the rules are transparent and not arbitrary.

Even now, based on your post I went hunting for the "rules".  The MGoBoards FAQ doesn't cover them.  Certainly doesn't list the authors who are verboten, or what will happen to those MGoPosters who inadvertently link them.

I do agree that this is a private business and the proprietors can run it as they wish.

Fair enough WindyCity you are a good poster and I get it. The Troll list is under the Moderator sticky not the FAQ, it's like new HR policies having to keep up on it.

For transparency, this is the total reason for the Topic and ban list is updated.

Sabin is way worse than Garcia, but Garcias' last post on Michigan Football was atrocious and bent on his Michigan prejudice. He's a POS journalist like Sabin.

I think that there's some truth to the claim that Michigan has not been great at dealing with negative stories whether it involves Mazi, Pearson etc.

On the other hand, the Matt Weiss incident was addressed fairly quickly and it's pretty standard that with employment issues (especially when criminal investigations are also involved) details are not be released for legal reasons. Also, Pearson was eventually fired despite a lot of success.

I guess my point is that I can't tell if the thesis of the column is that Michigan hasn't imposed sufficient consequences for misdeeds (in which case why are Weiss and Pearson included?), or that somehow Michigan has a culture that leads to more player/coach issues than other schools. If it's the latter, I think the column needs to do a lot more to explain how the incidents raised are different from player/coach problems that arise in every other athletic department.

Seth can ban whomever he wants however he wants and he’s just just letting us know. Not sure why this bothers people, you want to read his stuff, go read it. Just don’t use MGoBlog as a source of clicks. The end.

You should be allowed to share any information regarding Michigan athletics regardless of the source. Your users should be smart enough to be able to discuss trolls and put their dumbass ideas to bed.

Oh wait this is the real world.... nevermind

Just shows the names change but the rag they write for doesn’t.  I’ve seen maybe a handful of things from them in over a decade.  Nothing to read from them and this work just ensures it stays that way.

Media is entertainment not news. They are hired on to get people clicking and yelling at their computers/TVs. I know we all know about this but just here to remind us all what their motivation is and it’s not to inform us of goings on in the sport world.

Would it not be more reasonable to say, “I disagree with the premise of Tony Garcia’s article and the conclusions to which he comes?” The article is factually correct, his take is very debatable. I don’t read the Free Press with any regularity and I understand from reading others comments that they have a tendency to paint UM in a negative light, but calling him a troll seems a bit over the top based on my reading of just that article.

Just read his entire story.  While I don't love it, I can't find journalistic fault with it.  Seems factual and well written.  You can disagree with his conclusions, but I don't think they are some huge distortion of facts.  More like he is choosing to give no benefit of the doubt to Harbaugh and the program, while we tend to give a lot.
