I wouldn't be surprised if we win the National Championship this coming season and then Harbaugh rides off into the NFL sunset, along with most of our roster. It might be a bit of a rebuild after the 2023 season and if Harbaugh has accomplished his goal, does he stick around for the likely dip?

I think it means when your team is now consistently making the playoffs each year (and almost a definite with expansion), you don't make promises to 17 and 18 year olds that they will be the only ones you recruit. Recruit two 5 stars at the QB position and get them both on campus. If one doesn't want to wait/can't win the job, they can transfer.

We saw how the "youre the one that i want, do wah doo wahdeedoody" dance worked last time. we're open for 5 star business - the one that picks us is the one we want and we move out.

Telling a guy that he's the "only" one we want and then shunning the rest is a foolish approach to me.

All that said, i know nothing about how to recruit football players, know nothing about what goes through the minds of 18 year olds, and nothing about what inspires 18 year old fb players to commit.

So.. trust me.

Obviously these kids have their own needs and agenda, but stepping into Michigan in 24 with JJ either gone or in his last year, an NFL style offense, NIL shaping up nicely from all indications, and seeming program stability has to look good to young quarterbacks. I'm optimistic that a very good one will land in Ann Arbor.

Transfer portal is going to be a huge need next year - the bulk of the offense is leaving.  Also true freshman QB playing is not really a good outcome for us.

  • McCarthy* (maybe)
  • Corum
  • Edwards
  • Wilson
  • Johnson
  • Henderson
  • Zinter
  • Keegan

You are talking returning a starting TE and 2 OL (and maybe QB)

Good point. Filling the shoes of Corum and Edwards is a TALL order. However, I like the pipeline on Oline and based on profiles alone, the 24 WR group is attractive. You're right that Harbaugh's recent portal work is quite good and has to be attractive to young QBs OR maybe the source for our next QB (let's go Burrows version 2.0!).

We have a ton of guys in the pipeline who are going to improve by 2024. I think it is overly negative to write those guys off 2 years in advance. Here are some of the guys who could still be here in 2024.

QB - Warren, Bell, Denegal, Orji (hopefully an elite 2024 guy too)

RB - Stokes, Cabana, Hall, plus freshman (a little thin but if we have a decent 2024 class we should be fine)

TE - Loveland, Hibner, Klein, Marshall, Tonielli (looks stacked)

WR - Clemmons, Walker, Morris, English, Moore, Morgan (looks stacked)

OT - Hinton, Jones, Persi, Bounds, Gentry (looks stacked)

OG - Atteberry, Jones (looks stacked)

OT/OG - Barnhart, El Hadi, Lorenzetti (looks stacked)

OC - Could bring back entire chart (looks stacked)

Having a true freshman QB *starting* would be anxiety-inducing.  But working him into the mix, like with McCarthy in 2021, would shape up well for the following year.  And El-Haddi and Persi have been gaining in-game experience, while Crippen and Anderson have experience in the system.  At TE, Bredeson looked good in spots as a backup; I'm hoping he can be used more often.  At WR, we'll have to see how the kids do behind Johnson and Wilson.

I do not view this as great news. We cannot afford to miss on our QB targets again and suddenly dropping in on the top prospect seems like desperation.

He decommitted a month ago on December 17, 2022 and if memory serves, he was committed to OSU for a long time. I don't think it's desperation - we had a lot going on around that time - or that we've missed. CJ Carr did not want to play at Michigan under any circumstances and wanted to forge his own path and not be in the shadow of his grandfather. That's fine.

Dante Moore - not sure what the story is with him, but he went from Oregon to UCLA, so maybe he really wanted to be out west. I don't know.

We have Jaydn Davis and Raiola in 24 and there's that kid from Belleville in 25 I think. I can't remember where he goes. I think we'll be fine.

It would be great to land one of those 5-stars. That said, I'm not sure recruiting QBs is quite so zero-sum anymore. Could be it's just as wise, or maybe even wiser, to find elite QBs -- ones who have proven themselves at the college level -- via the portal. Obviously, you don't necessarily want to have to grab a transfer every season. But schools like Oklahoma and USC have done just fine using transfers.

Agreed. Bo Nix was fine at Oregon this year as was Justin Fields at OSU previously. Those are just the two that stick out in my head right now. Caleb Williams I don't really count because he was just following Lincoln Riley straight to USC. Quinn Ewers has the potential to workout well for Texas, but he also effectively went home. I think he grew up right outside of Austin.

We dont have Davis or Railoa...neither is committed and Railoa is linked to Georgia now. Underwood out of Belleville is in 2025, and is nowhere near a lock for UM.

Right now the QB room is JJ, Tuttle, Warren, Orji, Denegal. By the end of the season you may see up to 4 of those 5 gone. Its really important to close on a QB in 2024, because hoping for a 2025 top recruit sets you back 2 - 3 years.
