You have no idea of any of this NIL talk. You say it as fact that was why Jim was doing the nfl dance again when you have zero knowledge of that
January 18th, 2023 at 3:28 PM ^
Nobody knows if NIL had much to do with Harbaugh's NFL thing. But homerism compels people to put the best positive spin on it, even though it's pretty clear that his flirting hurts recruiting.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:38 PM ^
And it’s not fact that Davis was negatively effected by Harbaugh’s flirtation. In fact, there was another crystal ball made in favor of Michigan since the negotiations.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
There is nothing about Harbaugh's behavior in Dec/Jan that suggests "he obviously want back in the NFL". How about we wait for some actual facts, e.g. a signed contract, before we start spouting off about JH's inner workings?
January 18th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if we win the National Championship this coming season and then Harbaugh rides off into the NFL sunset, along with most of our roster. It might be a bit of a rebuild after the 2023 season and if Harbaugh has accomplished his goal, does he stick around for the likely dip?
January 18th, 2023 at 4:37 PM ^
This makes the most sense to me.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
Given Michigan hasn’t won one game in two CFP appearances, why wouldn’t you be surprised if they won two in one?
January 18th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
That’s not to say it’s impossible but highly improbable.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
He admittedly wanted back in the NFL last year and took meetings this year. That's pretty obvious.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
Man everytime Sam is cool with someone, we don't get that kid
January 18th, 2023 at 1:07 PM ^
I think it means when your team is now consistently making the playoffs each year (and almost a definite with expansion), you don't make promises to 17 and 18 year olds that they will be the only ones you recruit. Recruit two 5 stars at the QB position and get them both on campus. If one doesn't want to wait/can't win the job, they can transfer.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
"Get them both on campus"
Oh sure no big deal. Elite QBs sign up for that all the time!
January 18th, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^
But don't these guys feel they are the best of the best and could beat out anyone? And if they don't win the competition, there are a bunch of schools throwing money at them to transfer. QB #1 is no longer a 3-4 year commitment, but a gun for hire.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
They do, just not at Michigan.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:39 PM ^
First example that comes to mind is 2021: Kyle McCord and Quinn Ewers both went to Columbus.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:13 PM ^
Quinn Ewers wanted to get paid and high schoolers were not eligible for NIL in TX. That’s the only reason they were both in the same year.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
Right. We've landed three in a quarter century. I'm sure we'll nail down two for '24 with our coach annually flirting with the NFL. Easy.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
Even when this program is at the highest zenith it’s been at since 1997, certain elements in the fanbase will still actively look for reasons to say the sky is falling.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
I don’t think being realistic and acknowledging that there’s zero chance of us getting two 5* QBs in the same class is “actively looking for reasons to say the sky is falling.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:12 PM ^
We saw how the "youre the one that i want, do wah doo wahdeedoody" dance worked last time. we're open for 5 star business - the one that picks us is the one we want and we move out.
Telling a guy that he's the "only" one we want and then shunning the rest is a foolish approach to me.
All that said, i know nothing about how to recruit football players, know nothing about what goes through the minds of 18 year olds, and nothing about what inspires 18 year old fb players to commit.
So.. trust me.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:29 PM ^
Yep
It's amazing how 5 stars will sign when there are other 5 stars ahead of them @ Bama, OSU, Georgia. But it would be offensive to our QB recruits to have competition in the class behind them.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:12 PM ^
Pay him whatever he wants. I want, no I NEED to see OSU’s reaction to this and want to drink those tears so badly.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:25 PM ^
JJ came to michigan after Day not wanting him. Doubt that's the same case here, but it would be hilarious
January 18th, 2023 at 4:32 PM ^
Seeing as OSU has been losing QBs at an alarming pace recently, I think we can be 100% certain that Ryan Day really wanted and needed Raiola.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:13 PM ^
Rooting for the shit or get off the pot play by Harbaugh to not leave us with shit..... Going to be hard to get in with Raiola this late no?
January 18th, 2023 at 2:13 PM ^
*Maybe* not, given that Raiola doesn't get out of HS until 2024. And remember that UM was in early on Dante Moore, and . . . .
January 18th, 2023 at 4:37 PM ^
Also, considering his Dad had a 15 year NFL career that kind of overlapped with Harbaugh, there might be a good chance they have strong NFL connections that go way back.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:19 PM ^
Obviously these kids have their own needs and agenda, but stepping into Michigan in 24 with JJ either gone or in his last year, an NFL style offense, NIL shaping up nicely from all indications, and seeming program stability has to look good to young quarterbacks. I'm optimistic that a very good one will land in Ann Arbor.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
Transfer portal is going to be a huge need next year - the bulk of the offense is leaving. Also true freshman QB playing is not really a good outcome for us.
- McCarthy* (maybe)
- Corum
- Edwards
- Wilson
- Johnson
- Henderson
- Zinter
- Keegan
You are talking returning a starting TE and 2 OL (and maybe QB)
January 18th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
Good point. Filling the shoes of Corum and Edwards is a TALL order. However, I like the pipeline on Oline and based on profiles alone, the 24 WR group is attractive. You're right that Harbaugh's recent portal work is quite good and has to be attractive to young QBs OR maybe the source for our next QB (let's go Burrows version 2.0!).
January 18th, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
We have a ton of guys in the pipeline who are going to improve by 2024. I think it is overly negative to write those guys off 2 years in advance. Here are some of the guys who could still be here in 2024.
QB - Warren, Bell, Denegal, Orji (hopefully an elite 2024 guy too)
RB - Stokes, Cabana, Hall, plus freshman (a little thin but if we have a decent 2024 class we should be fine)
TE - Loveland, Hibner, Klein, Marshall, Tonielli (looks stacked)
WR - Clemmons, Walker, Morris, English, Moore, Morgan (looks stacked)
OT - Hinton, Jones, Persi, Bounds, Gentry (looks stacked)
OG - Atteberry, Jones (looks stacked)
OT/OG - Barnhart, El Hadi, Lorenzetti (looks stacked)
OC - Could bring back entire chart (looks stacked)
January 18th, 2023 at 2:26 PM ^
That's a full roster, not necessarily a stacked one.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:24 PM ^
Having a true freshman QB *starting* would be anxiety-inducing. But working him into the mix, like with McCarthy in 2021, would shape up well for the following year. And El-Haddi and Persi have been gaining in-game experience, while Crippen and Anderson have experience in the system. At TE, Bredeson looked good in spots as a backup; I'm hoping he can be used more often. At WR, we'll have to see how the kids do behind Johnson and Wilson.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
Maybe u can show that list to a bunch of 5 stars and tell them they can play right a way and begin to make money right a way.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:15 PM ^
If Hart doesn't land a 5* RB this cycle, he needs to go.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:34 PM ^
Stokes showed flashes and Cabana is an elite recruit. He has time.
January 18th, 2023 at 11:12 PM ^
Yeah, our running backs really suck ass, Mike Hart needs to answer for this crime, unacceptable.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:42 PM ^
" an NFL style offense"
All but 3 teams in the NFL threw more than ran.
We were 65% run last year.
We are definitely NOT an NFL style offense.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
That's comparing apples and oranges though. NFL teams play far more close games. It's also harder to run the ball in general in the pros.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:19 PM ^
Need to bring in Ono to close the deal with one of these QBs.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
I’m excited for him to tell Warde the good news!
January 18th, 2023 at 1:22 PM ^
I do not view this as great news. We cannot afford to miss on our QB targets again and suddenly dropping in on the top prospect seems like desperation.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
He decommitted a month ago on December 17, 2022 and if memory serves, he was committed to OSU for a long time. I don't think it's desperation - we had a lot going on around that time - or that we've missed. CJ Carr did not want to play at Michigan under any circumstances and wanted to forge his own path and not be in the shadow of his grandfather. That's fine.
Dante Moore - not sure what the story is with him, but he went from Oregon to UCLA, so maybe he really wanted to be out west. I don't know.
We have Jaydn Davis and Raiola in 24 and there's that kid from Belleville in 25 I think. I can't remember where he goes. I think we'll be fine.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:40 PM ^
It would be great to land one of those 5-stars. That said, I'm not sure recruiting QBs is quite so zero-sum anymore. Could be it's just as wise, or maybe even wiser, to find elite QBs -- ones who have proven themselves at the college level -- via the portal. Obviously, you don't necessarily want to have to grab a transfer every season. But schools like Oklahoma and USC have done just fine using transfers.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:44 PM ^
Agreed. Bo Nix was fine at Oregon this year as was Justin Fields at OSU previously. Those are just the two that stick out in my head right now. Caleb Williams I don't really count because he was just following Lincoln Riley straight to USC. Quinn Ewers has the potential to workout well for Texas, but he also effectively went home. I think he grew up right outside of Austin.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
Dante Moore decommitted from Oregon when Bo Nix decided to stay there--so maybe that's an indication of tending toward a zero-sum process?
January 18th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^
We dont have Davis or Railoa...neither is committed and Railoa is linked to Georgia now. Underwood out of Belleville is in 2025, and is nowhere near a lock for UM.
Right now the QB room is JJ, Tuttle, Warren, Orji, Denegal. By the end of the season you may see up to 4 of those 5 gone. Its really important to close on a QB in 2024, because hoping for a 2025 top recruit sets you back 2 - 3 years.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:59 PM ^
We missed on our QB targets in 2022. We missed on Dante Moore in this cycle. I have not read anything to think Underwood is coming to Michigan.
We NEED an elite QB in 2024 or we will have to fight it out in the portal or hope Warren, Denegal, or Orji rises to the occasion.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:25 PM ^
Honestly, I’m willing to fight it out in the portal if we need to. We’ve got a good track record there.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
Warren is your likely starter if JJ leaves next year.
