Corum is having knee surgery
Sources: #Michigan star RB Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and is out for the season. The Heisman candidate should make a full recovery. He tried to play last week vs. Ohio State but his knee made it impossible.

Have to wonder what that means for his future. Draft stock surely takes a hit with this, depending on what the surgery is.

He's a Junior; maybe he comes back. Maybe he shines during the NFL combine. shrug dot gif
December 1st, 2022 at 3:05 PM ^
that's what i was thinking. i want the best for him and he may just decide that it's best to come back next year. either way, love the kid, love his ability and hope whatever choice he makes works out fantastically.

Tom VH has a blip on it on the front page of ESPN.com. He said he's having surgery but finished with this:
It is unknown what the recovery time will look like for Corum or whether he will be cleared to play if Michigan makes it to the College Football Playoff.

Wonder if Blake had a meniscus tear. Not a doc but I've had a few sports-derived knee injuries. A meniscus tear can be very problematic or not bother you very much, at least based on my experience. I had a couple of scope-based procedures that cleared mine up very quickly, Many players can return in a few weeks from that type of injury. It would seem that if there were a serious tear of a ligament, the instability of the knee would lend itself to a quick diagnosis with MRI confirmation.
If Blake has a reasonable shot at the NFL, although I would be overjoyed if he returned for a fourth year, I hope he leaves. There is simply too much wear and tear a high-use RB experiences on a college team like ours, and there is only so much a body can take over a career. Whatever he chooses, the best of luck to someone who truly deserves all the good things life has to offer.

Agreed and also wondering if it was surgery-worthy why wait?
Did he make it worse on his 2 carries? Or if it was this bad, why didn't they perform the surgery asap and get him on the road to recovery faster?
To be fair, I'm not a doctor...did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and have never had a knee injury...so I have no clue.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:54 PM ^
But have you played a doctor on tv?
December 1st, 2022 at 2:59 PM ^
Absolutely!
December 1st, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
Dr Drake Ramori here. How you doing?
as for Blake, best wishes and prayers for a full recovery.
and Fffffuuuuuucccccckkkkk!!!!
December 1st, 2022 at 3:07 PM ^
Is Rappaport a 100% reliable source? I mean, what's the injury, what's the surgery, and another site is suggesting Blake could be ready by a potential Jan. 9 ncaa title game.
So who knows? But definitely he shouldn't have even carried 2 times if surgery was a potential outcome - or is surgery a potential outcome because of those 2 carries?
Either way, not in the player's nor team's best interest I'd suggest...
December 1st, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
Blake being available for The Game likely caused OSU's D to be so run focused. That is why you wait.

The original statement was that it was nothing "structural". Then the other day suddenly there was a rumor he was getting scoped, and now this.
I'm not a doctor, but if I was a betting man, I would think the initial MRIs didn't detect anything and he seemed fine, but something was discovered during the scope that determined surgery was the best course of action.
And, maybe the two statements aren't in conflict with one another. Maybe it's not structural (think ACL, LCL, etc) but could be something like a miniscus that would benefit from surgery.
December 1st, 2022 at 4:16 PM ^
On the contrary, my guess was the nothing "structural" comment was mainly based on a plain x-ray and initial exam as the MRI had likely not been done at that time as it all occurred at the stadium. Most likely he had an MRI the night after the game, rather than the next day as alluded to in a post game comment, and nothing "major" was found, or at least not singled out for a comment.
My guess is that due to ongoing or worsening symptoms, a repeat MRI was done either late this Saturday or this Sunday, revealing further disease.

I don't get this--Harbaugh specifically said they examined him and nothing was structurally wrong with the knee?
December 2nd, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
I dont think it was major until he planted that leg on his 2nd run saturday. Neither did the coaches or doctors apparently.

I play a doctor in real life and have the same questions.

If it’s a scope to remove scar tissue, then they didn’t really “wait” to do this.

RB has a short shelf life with high chances of injuries, he should be advised to go to the draft ASAP. He is still a day 2 pick. As long as he is ready to compete in the combine, he'll be fine
December 1st, 2022 at 3:55 PM ^
How much does a Heisman favorite RB make at Michigan?
Day 2 pick means $1.6M to $800k salary.
How much do Woodson & Desmond still make a year off being a Heisman winner at Michigan? If he stays he could be a legend here, coaching future, etc.
December 1st, 2022 at 7:06 PM ^
Love that this take is at least being mentioned. 99.9% of time it is just "go for the money now".
Even Mike Hart is doing ok for money these days...after a couple of NFL pay days, then coaching. Tough work for him, but paying off. Desmond is a well-spoken charismatic guy who enjoys some spotlight. Another way to make a career.
For most other types, it still may be best to go for the money, but all of them should seriously consider their post-career options up-front based on personality and interests. Much cooler being a legend with your alma mater until end of days than some average joe in NFL disliked by most fantasy team organizers.

December 1st, 2022 at 3:27 PM ^
There was an insidery rumbling yesterday that Corum was going to get his knee scoped and be good to go by playoffs (JT Barrett did it in 6 days back in 2017). Could this be that and they are jumping the gun in out for the year?
December 1st, 2022 at 4:21 PM ^
FWIW, ESPN is simply saying they don't know how long the recovery will be. Who knows
December 1st, 2022 at 2:29 PM ^
Man up Donovan …. CJ your time has come trust your eyes
December 1st, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
Man up CJ is my opinion. Actually Dunlap. These guys should both be ahead of Gash and Leon Franklin on the depth chart.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:54 PM ^
Based on snap count and carries/usage Gash is ahead of Dunlap on the mythical depth chart.
December 1st, 2022 at 3:02 PM ^
I believe the fact it appears Gash is ahead of Dunlap is precisely what the portal was created for. We shall see.
Hope Tavi gets a bunch of carries vs Purdue, to see what he can offer with some extended run. They always say RBs need some carries to get in rhythm, and he's never gotten that.
December 1st, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
Ideally we get out to a quick lead and can use CJ and Dunlap most of the second half of the game. Last year was great where we had 1A and 1B in Haskins/Corum with Edwards coming in at number 2, but there was a huge dropoff after. We now have Corum and Edwards, then a huge dropoff. Next year is a mystery behind Edwards even with Cabana coming. I've seen some on here saying we are stacked at the RB position for years and I don't see it yet. It's not that I don't trust the future RB's, but I think we could use a RB from the portal that will challenge the younger guys to step up.
December 1st, 2022 at 3:34 PM ^
No idea what you all see in CJ..guy puts his head down and runs blind.
December 1st, 2022 at 4:07 PM ^
Seriously? We said the same shit about DE last year. Remember?
December 2nd, 2022 at 5:12 AM ^
The best thing about that is he has the best RB coach in the biz to fix any issues he may have. Harts taken our running game to a next level thing in the few years he’s been here, meanwhile Indianas has become non existent since he left.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
Truly sad for this kid! Somewhat obviously....This may change the offensive approach, opening it up.
December 1st, 2022 at 4:22 PM ^
Aside from bulking up, all CJ needs is touches. Experience. He's got all it takes to be a good back.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:30 PM ^
We know what we have from Edwards and Stokes. I wonder is Mullings will get some carries this week
December 1st, 2022 at 2:50 PM ^

The first ever dual threat running back
December 1st, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
Mullings had 1 carry in The Game that was purely to set up his one pass. He's not playing RB.
December 2nd, 2022 at 9:48 AM ^
Of course not. He's playing QB!
December 2nd, 2022 at 5:15 AM ^
That’s exactly what I was thinking. I gotta believe that off size alone that any carry he gets is worth 3.5 yds just falling forward. Shit, look at what Traynum did out of nowhere. Looked like he should have been toting the rock all season. This is our Cardale moment.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
Probably a smart move. Fix the knee so he's possibly ready for the combine, or at the very least ready to go by next year if he gets drafted.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:34 PM ^
The kid has done enough, let him rest.
December 1st, 2022 at 2:44 PM ^
Or pay him NIL money to get him to stay another year. Rookie running backs don't even get paid all that much in the NFL. He may be more valuable at Michigan
He's a mid round draft pick right now no?
December 1st, 2022 at 2:48 PM ^
Yeah for some reason I thought Blake was a senior.
