This is the best Michigan athletics season since?
I would say 1997-1998. Michigan football and hockey won national titles and Michigan basketball won the first Big Ten Tournament. Right now, Michigan football is 6th, Michigan hockey is 1st, Michigan mens basketball is 6th, Michigan womens basketball is 11th, Michigan field hockey is 2nd, Michigan womens cross country is 9th, Michigan mens cross country is 15th and I may be missing some sports.

Yeah, 97 was good but I'm partial to 1989. Not only was it my Freshman year at UM (shout out to Chicago House), but we won the basketball National Championship and the Rose Bowl. Hockey didn't make the tourney, but Red was just starting to build a dynasty. Denny Felser had an amazing freshman year with 49pts to start a great career.

But Woodson also won the Heisman in 97 - on the same day that Michigan basketball upset Duke in Crisler.

How 'bout--since it's the fall/football season now and winter, with bball and hockey (etc.) will shortly get underway--we say something like, "Twenty-twenty-one is setting up as the best Michigan sports year since. . . Discuss!" I could get behind that.
October 19th, 2021 at 11:18 PM ^
Woodson gave a shoutout to the basketball team during his Heisman interview.
That was the third straight year we beat Duke in basketball but on this day, it was even better because they were ranked #1.
I think the hockey team (who went on to win the national title that year) beat Boston College that day so it was an epic Saturday.

Nothing has been won yet. So I don't know how this season can be classified as 'successful' on the basis of 1/2 of a football season (the much easier half one must add), a much smaller fraction of a hockey season and *nothing* but pre-season accolades in basketball.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:39 PM ^
Maybe the title should be "This might be the best Michigan football 1/2 season, Hockey hand full of games, and Michigan basketball not even playing one game yet since?"
October 19th, 2021 at 5:20 PM ^
Please people...optimism is great but when we cross the line into unfettered jinx territory, it has to be called out. Football season is less than half over. Hockey is a handful of games in and basketball hasn't started yet. Let's re-title this one "I haven't been this excited for UM sports since ___".
edit: scooped by BlueMK by a few seconds
October 19th, 2021 at 5:21 PM ^
Nope, not falling for the jinx attempt. Ask me in April.
A lot of potential here though.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:15 PM ^
April is too soon. Prime "Fire Bakich" season.
October 19th, 2021 at 11:20 PM ^
Don't forget "Fire Hutch" season.
October 19th, 2021 at 5:24 PM ^
6-0 with the four toughest games yet to play (football), a few early season hockey wins, and basketball season yet to start ... and now it's the best year for all of Michigan athletics in a quarter century.
I dig the optimism.
October 19th, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
@MSU, @PSU, OSU, what's the fourth?
October 19th, 2021 at 5:41 PM ^
Bowl game
October 19th, 2021 at 6:49 PM ^
In that case, I believe you mean 6 toughest games.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:53 PM ^
Now that’s optimism! I like it!!
October 20th, 2021 at 7:12 PM ^
All we have is optimism and hope. Without that, we would all be circling the BPONE becoming mindless drones like the ones you see in Nebraska.
October 19th, 2021 at 5:32 PM ^
Not sure, but Fuck Stanford
October 19th, 2021 at 5:41 PM ^
Easy buddy, we're halfway through the season.
October 19th, 2021 at 5:53 PM ^
Um. 2018-19 Michigan finished second in the director's cup. So ... yeah. Long way to go to even reach two years ago.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:03 PM ^
IT IS STILL ONLY OCTOBER 19.
A better question would be 'when was the last time we were so optimistic on October 19?'
The answer, of course, is that it does not matter because it's only October 19.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:14 PM ^
It’s October. Can the season actually start for some of these teams before we go talking about “best season since…?”
It’s preseason hype for the most part. Even with hockey they’ve only played 4 games. Let’s let the seasons play out and look back in awe after they’ve concluded.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
Since ask again later.
Results matter. Finishing matters.
Potential? Off the charts high.
But football has its three hardest games coming up in the second half. Hockey has a mountain to climb with inevitable struggles and injuries and bad puck luck to come. And basketball hasn’t even tipped off yet.
So we have no idea.
It’s fun right now, though.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:34 PM ^
Not a single one of our teams has had a chance to win anything yet, but one of the most consistently negative people on the board is hyping this year anyhow. Weird.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:50 PM ^
The last time Michigan football, basketball & hockey have all been top 10 at the same time was probably 1993.
October 19th, 2021 at 6:59 PM ^
Ok, in 1992-93 football, basketball and hockey all finished top 10.
Football finished #5 (undefeated, thrice tied) after winning the Rose Bowl
Basketball finished #3 and made the final game
Hockey got a #2 seed (so top 8) and made the Frozen Four
I can't think of another time since then that all 3 were top 10 programs at the end of the season. Hopefully we'll see the same this year.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:08 PM ^
October 19th, 2021 at 11:23 PM ^
As much as the thrice tied and timeout sucked then, t'was a pretty sweet senior year.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:04 PM ^
Welp. This thread pretty much guarantees football losses to MSU and OSU and then to ND in the Cheez-it Bowl, a basketball flameout on the opening weekend of the tourney, and hockey being disqualified from postseason play due to the equipment Manager's breakthrough Covid infection.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:45 PM ^
Yep. Jinxed the whole damn thing.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:07 PM ^
You’ll get negged since it’s still WAY too early, but let’s frame it as, “when was the last time all three major college sports were really good at the same time?” My guess would be 2011-2012. Brady Hoke was still pooping gold on his way to a Sugar Bowl win, basketball tied for first in the B1G, and hockey was in their final season of their incredible postseason streak. It is great to see things trending back in a positive direction for all three sports. Go Blue!!!
October 19th, 2021 at 7:27 PM ^
Looking back over the past 25 years, there have been plenty of years where 2 out of those 3 teams have been really good, but it is a rare treat to have all three at or near the top of the rankings. Enjoy the journey!
October 19th, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Everything is good NOW, but for the best season
October 19th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
