College Game Day - Week 9 - Where?
UM @ MSU would seem to be the logical choice if UM takes care of business v NW. If so, I am sure Sparty (Papa Doc) would have nothing witty or original in the sign department.
A check on that slate of weekend games:
PSU @ OSU
UM@ MSU
Ole Miss @ Auburn

I'd bet on Columbus since Herbstreit will be calling that game.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:12 PM ^
That's like the 8th best reason it'll be in Columbus. He'd have plenty of time to fly from EL to Columbus between noon and 730 and he does that all the time. But it's not even a question that it'll be in Columbus because:
1) OSU-PSU is a bigger game in terms of national audience appeal
2) It's objectively a "better" matchup in terms of team quality: the 5th v 7th ranked teams compared to the 6th and 9th.
3) it's being broadcast on a Disney channel so given the above, of course Gameday is going to promote that game
October 18th, 2021 at 5:15 PM ^
Just saying, GameDay doesn't always go to the game Herbstreit is calling, and they usually just try to pick the best game, regardless of which network has it. Just this year, GameDay has gone to UGA-Kentucky and Wisco-ND, neither of which was on ESPN. There are plenty of examples from every year.
They will pass on the "best" game if Herbstreit wouldn't have time to fly to the game he's set to call (which is why Penn State-Iowa wasn't Gameday -- the Red River Game was set to kick at noon ET, so GameDay had to be there if Herbstreit was going to call it). They'll also choose a second-tier game if the GameDay game would be directly competing with one of ESPN's premier games (ie at the same time).
So while it's certainly possible GameDay will choose OSU-Penn State, it's not a sure thing. Our game and that game are at different times so they're not competing with each other, and Herbstreit has plenty of time to fly from East Lansing to Columbus.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
Responding to both you and TrueBlue:
Gameday does not only attend games that Herbie is calling. You've given a couple of examples here, and there are many others. When there is a clear best game of the day and it's not on an ESPN network, Gameday goes, because it's a college football show. This has been immensely good for the entire sport for over 25 years now and they have earned respect and plaudits for it.
However: They do have a bit of a network bias. It's just logistically easier for a number of reasons if Gameday is at a game that is already being broadcast on their network.
PSU and OSU both have a loss while the Michigan teams don't, but they also both have had much harder schedules to this point, and the winner of that game is the favorite to win the division. So the two games are basically even with regard to significance. Given that they're roughly equal, I'd expect PSU-OSU to get the nod.
But if OSU loses to Indiana (or PSU loses to IllinHAHAHAHA uh nevermind on this one) they could change their mind. Obviously, it wouldn't be hard for Herbstreit to fly to Columbus in that case.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:23 PM ^
What makes Ohio State’s schedule harder other than Oregon? If you lost to the team that makes your schedule better doesn’t that pretty much cancel out your better schedule?
October 18th, 2021 at 5:19 PM ^
or he could fly in/out to call games like he does all the time.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:47 PM ^
Having ESPN’s College Game Day crew in Columbus on October 30 for the Penn State-Ohio State game would be the logical choice, but consider an extreme longshot choice – Dartmouth at Harvard.
Both teams currently are 5-0 in the Ivy League standings. If Harvard wins at Princeton (5-0) and Dartmouth beats Columbia (4-1) at home this Saturday, that would set up a noon matchup between unbeaten Ivy League teams. College Game Day hasn’t been at Harvard since November 2014 for the Harvard-Yale game. Absent weather-related issues, getting to Columbus from Boston for the Ohio State-Penn State game at 7:30 wouldn’t be a serious problem for Herbstreit.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:52 PM ^
I'm going to go out on a limb and say GameDay won't be at Dartmouth-Harvard.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
They should do something like that for variety's sake.
October 19th, 2021 at 4:41 AM ^
This is some serious "out of the box" thinking. Either that or the shrooms are kicking in. I like it!
Looks like Fox will be there.

Big noon kick off is going to be in EL so I imagine college gameday will be in Columbus
October 18th, 2021 at 4:51 PM ^
Agree with this. GameDay probably in Columbus with big noon kickoff in EL.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:00 PM ^
Yeah, I posted this in the other thread, but I don't know why ESPN would put GameDay anywhere that isn't an ABC/ESPN game. Like free advertising for Fox.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:28 PM ^
They do it a lot, because they are a college football show and they have enough integrity to recognize that they don't broadcast every important game. They've done this for decades. Literally the first on-site show ever was for Notre Dame-FSU in '93 when it was the 1-2 matchup, and that was broadcast on NBC.
The Gameday product is immensely better because of this. When you watch, you think, "they love college football," not, "they're selling me something." And college football is better for it. So, in this case, a rising tide lifts all boats.

LA, California
October 18th, 2021 at 5:53 PM ^
That's this week.
6am start time is rough, though. I live down the street from the Rose Bowl and I'm not even going to pop over.
October 18th, 2021 at 6:55 PM ^
This weekend in Los Angeles, besides the ESPN College Game Day crew broadcasting from UCLA’s campus in Westwood ahead of the UCLA-Oregon game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the NBC Sports Premier League Fan Fest crew will be up even earlier, broadcasting from the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles while the USC football team will be visiting Notre Dame. LINK
October 18th, 2021 at 7:11 PM ^
Interesting. 4am! I live in LA. Wonder what the turnout will be.
I have some UofM friends going to Westwood to check out Gameday bright and early before the Michigan game starts.
October 18th, 2021 at 4:52 PM ^
well we know ESPN is basically SEC network so Ole Miss @ Auburn it is
October 18th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
does Georgia play at home? they're the odds on favorite to host Gameday
October 18th, 2021 at 7:44 PM ^
Georgia at Florida
October 18th, 2021 at 11:09 PM ^
Gonna be played, as always, in Jacksonville. World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
October 19th, 2021 at 12:18 AM ^
Well Florida better get that Georgia defense drunk. Because that game is headed toward a very embarrassing loss for them.
October 18th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
Since ESPN has the rights to OSU-PSU, then I'd imagine in C-bus, but I feel like the better story is the Michigan-MSU game, so there's still a chance.
October 18th, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
No way Fox wants to give up Michigan -msu Big Noon Kickoff. That's their marquee game that weekend and they will want to promote the heck out of it on their own network that morning.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:15 PM ^
Fox doesn't have to give up Big Noon for Gameday to be there, I don't believe. Pretty sure they sometimes do their shows from the same towns, as will likely be the case for The Game.
October 18th, 2021 at 6:36 PM ^
What the Mayor says below....for some reason I thought they also were both in TX for the OU vs. UT game.....
October 18th, 2021 at 6:23 PM ^
Both Fox and Gameday were in Chicago for ND/Wisky so I don’t think that matters. FWIW, I think it will be in CBus though.
October 18th, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
Nobody wants to go to East Lansing. Not even ESPN.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:45 PM ^
I feel like The Bear and the crew didn't have a good time last time they were in EL he's said on his pod. But I may be wrong.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:18 PM ^
My sister occasionally works the broadcasts, and said she never truly appreciated Michigan and it's facilities until she worked a game at State. State's facilities are pure trash from a broadcast perspective...
October 18th, 2021 at 7:19 PM ^
Didn't Herby get hit by something in the 90s when in EL? I'm pretty sure the Spartans are the reason Gameday had to put up a protective net.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:35 PM ^
I dislike 'the Bear'. I don't think he adds anything, and every time the camera cuts to him it feels contrived. Plus, he doesn't like Michigan - I know from last week, when he asked the trivia question about the last time the Big Ten had two top 5 teams playing each other when one of them wasn't OSU. He specifically stated that UM wasn't necessary to that question. Fuck him... Who cares if it was technically correct? It was an obvious slight towards Michigan, so fuck him.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:40 PM ^
I feel like he actually picks us whenever we're on his board. He thinks we're good this year.
But maybe that just about the money.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
Lee Corso's first ever "head-gear pick" was when GameDay was in Columbus for a PSU/OSU game in October 1996.
This is the 25th anniversary of that, so this may be a factor in this decision as well.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:43 PM ^
Maybe he'll announce his retirement?
Ahh, fuck it...it used to be uncomfortable when he was clearly slowing down and couldn't get words out. Now it's kind of adorable how they help him along and he's not even featured that much.
Go out when you want to go out, old man! Thanks for the memories.
October 19th, 2021 at 12:14 AM ^
Looking at the list of games, that's about the best one available.

this is interesting
EDIT: these guys predicting CGD week 9 at EL, week 11 at PSU, week 13 A2
October 18th, 2021 at 5:59 PM ^
This will be the week they go to a random D2 matchup.
*Edit: random FCS matchup.
October 18th, 2021 at 6:13 PM ^
They should have gone to Allendale last week for #7 Grand Valley vs #2 Ferris State.
Matt Mitchell just can't get over the hump vs Ferris and Tony Annese.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:15 PM ^
Is he just too old to take another step up the ladder? I assume he is now at age 60 but surprised he didn't get (or wasn't considered for) a MAC job say 5 or so years ago.
October 19th, 2021 at 8:53 AM ^
Annese has a lot of baggage from his days at Muskegon and GRCC. I don't think he's going to get that chance but also, he may just be happy where he is at this point in his career. He's built a D2 powerhouse in pretty short order.
October 19th, 2021 at 9:02 AM ^
Mitchell is starting to become a bit polarizing not unlike Harbaugh. Wins a high percentage of games, has shown the propensity to drop one he shouldn't, and is now deep in the hole to his main rival. GV fans are getting a little antsy as it's been since 2016 that they've made a regional final, and that game was a stinging loss to, you guessed it, Ferris State.
October 18th, 2021 at 6:41 PM ^
October 19th, 2021 at 8:55 AM ^
I know you're just kind of riffing here but AFAIK, GameDay has never actually gone to a D2 game. They've done D3 and FCS, but never D2.
October 19th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
I stand corrected, I meant FCS.
October 18th, 2021 at 7:04 PM ^
I would bet on Columbus because Fox will be in East Lansing (but I think they’ve shared before).
October 18th, 2021 at 8:38 PM ^
They were both in Chicago for ND/Wisconsin.
But that week didn't give them any other option except like Iowa St or something, IIRC.
