Iowa Will Sell Beer and Wine in Kinnick Stadium this Fall
I’m guessing we’ll see more of this as schools look to recover money lost last year.
Gotta raise money to buyout Ferentz someway.
That guy is like a more tenured Gus Malzahn. Mostly meh and okay seasons, but generally underperforms, enters a make or break year on the hot seat, wins 10-12 games, beats a rival, gets a contract extension, and the cycle then starts all over again.
Yeah, that’s kinda the ceiling for Iowa as a program though. As long as you’re winning 8-9 games a year, nobody is upset.
Expectations at a program are relative to the job itself. Iowa is never going to be an elite program, their fans realize this and their expectations are adjusted. They’re never going to be a Bama or OSU type program. Iowa fans are okay with that, and nobody really wants him gone as a result.
Same reason Fitz is considered one of the best coaches in the country. He’s won 58% of his games at Northwestern and is a hair over .500 in conference play, but it’s Northwestern so that’s great for them. Matt Campbell will be welcome in Ames for as long as he wants to be there as long as he’s winning 7+ games.
Buy out Ferentz? No one here wants him gone...(Michigan fan in IC)
Michigan fan on the west side of Iowa.
Are you kidding me!? At least half want him gone. They have seen their boring offense play out the same script again and again. They are all dreading the day his son takes over for him and things just stay the same.
So the worry is the offense and not the culture of 'tolerance' that Ferentz has continued tolerating?
It seems as though there are far too many football coaches tolerating things that they shouldnt.
This is the curse of being an Iowa fan. I think a lot of Iowa fans say this type of thing but then they start to evaluate what the alternative is and realize there's nothing better for them out there.
*shrug*
Almost certainly going to happen in most stadiums. It potentially cuts down on trying to pound as many as possible before going into the stadium. Once you buy the ticket what's another $10 for a beer? Easy money maker.
Avatar checks out
What about the children?! THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY IS BEING RIPPED APART.
Sweet!! $12 for a can of Bud Light or Coors?? Sign me up!
Fits right in with the $200 to rent a 2'X2' piece of metal to put your ass on for 3 hours. I'm surprised the toilet paper machines aren't run by a vending system at this point.
I am trying to think of how badly I would have to make a "major transaction" to actually use a stadium stall? It would have to be a intestinal parasite type thing.
It would be like the lottery. Cash only. They don't want people irrationally running up debt in a panic.
2'x2' seat? You must sit in the luxury boxes.
My wife tells me I always over-estimate my size estimates.
Worse - in Iowa it'll be Busch Light.
This reminds me of the book I am currently reading: "Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced, and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization." Written by a serious academic, the book basically argues that instead of being a bi-product of early civilization and farming, alcohol may have made these things possible.
I strongly recommend the book. It has one of the best opening sentences ever: "People like to masturbate. They also like to get drunk and eat Twinkies. Not typically all at the same time, but that's a matter of personal preference."
Never thought of Jim Delany as a serious academic, but I will now.
Actually, masturbation and eating Twinkies do have one similarity: if you squeeze them both enough, the cream comes out.
I'll be here all week. Try the veal.
I actually found myself going down the proverbial rabbit hole regarding this same type of thing. Though I was reading journal articles off of PubMed / Elsevier etc.
Basically, psychedelics, marijuana and alcohol likely gave rise to civilization, sense of self, religion, and sort of confirmed McKenna's "stoned ape" theory (or at least supported some of his basic ideas).
The human species has evolved to not only deal with these things (alcohol dehydrogenase) but also to benefit from their consumption (cannabinoid receptors). Also, psilocin is almost chemically identical to seratonin, and cave paintings from tens of thousands of years ago suggest shrooms apparently played a major role in human society.
Absolutely fascinating stuff.
I heard that book discussed on NPR a week or two ago. Sounds fascinating. Who would have thought that our drunken loutishness is the key to our dominant position in the global environmental hierarchy.
There will hundreds more drunk guys named Clint / Karl / Kyle in that stadium next fall.
Kids nowdays will never know the fun we had circa 1978-81 when the stadium allowed you to bring ANYTHING in as long as it wasnt made of glass (my brother who was at Michigan from 66-72 said their was no restrictions at all back then).
We used to bring in pony kegs and set up beer stations in the student section. Now that's how you watch a football game.
....nice, but do you remember any of the games???
How many of the games this year do you think you’ll want to remember?
My sister and I got to experience this in the 2008 NW game where the weather was atrocious. Most of our section had bailed at halftime and we noticed a couple guys had a full size cooler in the stands in about the fifth row. We went down to ask them how they managed to sneak that in and they said they just walked right in with it. Security didn't care because the weather was that bad. So we sat and drank beer from the cooler with them as we finished off watching one of the worst Michigan football games in history.
Ha, reminds me of the time I stopped at a liquor store on my way in to Memorial Stadium in NE for the KSU game several years ago. I bought about every airplane bottle they had for the group. The guy looks at me and says I could just buy bigger bottles as it would be way cheaper. I replied, "sir, i'm going to stick these bottles in places you don't want to know about and bigger ones would be an issue".
And people used to make some decent $ picking up and returning all the beer cans after the games.
Whoa, looks like they're already tipsy...
It’s really silly that this hasn’t happened by now. There are too many downsides to stadium beer for me though. Between the cost, time it takes to get to and from your seat, and bathroom breaks, it’s super inconvenient to drink beer at a stadium.
That's part of the enjoyment of the game. Drinking too much overpriced beer, eating too much overpriced food, spending too much time waiting in line for the concessions or restroom. Along with high ticket prices, High parking prices and high souvenir prices, more and more fans will bail out of attending games and sit home and watch on TV or just not bother.
Or, you know, just don't buy the overpriced beer and overpriced food. Half of the problems you listed are already solved.
Looks like college football wants to acquire that NFL fan mentality.
Has anyone tried corn wine? Is it any good?
I kid the Hawkeyes, but apparently it’s a real thing.

Not a surprise - just continuing the trend of turning popular college sports into cash cows.
Sad to see.
Awesome, yes, let's definitely bring the drunken toxic behavior of the NFL crowds to NCAA football. It's just the ingredient that's been missing.
Clearly you don't understand how awesome I am when I'm hammered, leaning into you (BUT graciously apologizing), let alone how great the stories are from what I recall of the game when I relive those moments with my friends who smile and laugh at all my "and then remember the Purdue game? We were so F-ed...it was awesome!" stories.
Football with your friends and family sucks if you're not hammered. I love getting hammered in front of my kids AND YOURS! ?
What's your deal, man?!
I can verify this, I saw the order.
1200 Kegs of Busch Light and 2 containers of box wine.
It'll spread to the rest of the B1G if they make enough money from it. The atmosphere at the stadium will suffer when it does.
What could go wrong?
Minnesota has had this at least since 2015. I went to the Michigan - Gopher game that year and had a few Grain Belt's. Was awesome.
