That sounds like a great position for a man that spent his life teaching basketball at a very high level. Congrats to Coach Beilein, I hope he helps rebuild the Pistons to some level of decent - of which they haven't seen in decades!
Interesting hire. I really hope it works out for him.
Me too.
Of course I also said that about Trammell coming back to manage the Tigers too...
Great for him to stay in the area in a job that sounds made for him, and not become a competitor coach!
Congratulations, Coach Beilein! Congratulations, Pistons!
Nice move here by Weaver and the Pistons FO, and very excited for John Beilein! He's definitely proven throughout his career that he has elite player development skills, and having a guy with his overall basketball acumen in your organization is never a bad thing. This seems like a role that he could excel at, and with the hometown team to boot.
I think he could really do a lot for the young guys like Hayes, Bey, Beef Stew, Diallo and Doumboya. All guys 22 and under that are well served to continue developing their fundamentals and shooting as they establish themselves as NBA players.
Congrats coach!
The Pistons have a guy nicknamed (I assume that isn’t his given name) Beef Stew? Am I about to jump on a bandwagon for an NBA team for the first time in 20ish years...Beilein and Beef Stew
Yes, Isaiah Stewart. He's a kind of smallish center who's really tenacious and plays hard on both ends of the floor. He's got some heft to him (in the good way), so fans nicknamed him Beef.
He's really leaned into it, including posting pictures of him eating beef stew while wearing a beef stew shirt. He's a fun guy to have around and has developed well this season.
Sold, I’m in.
They're going to make a play for Hardaway.
Which would be a dumb idea.
This doesn't seem right for him. He does have a great eye for talent ....but still .. if he doesn't want the college recruit grind, he should be a color analyst like Dakich.
He did that already. Maybe he decided that it wasn’t for him and he wanted a more hands on position?
fergodsakes i think the man knows what he wants
Does he, though? He took a job with the Cavs and lasted about a month, so I'd say the evidence is mixed.
He could do both. Being a color commentator is not a full time job. A lot of those guys have daily radio gigs.
The Pistons might actually encourage him to do both and have him scout the Big10 while watching the game.
Does an advisor count as an assistant? I’d hate to break the never-assistant streak! What would they talk about when he’s on TV?
Repeat after me John........
SLUGS. S.L.U.G.S. SLUGS.
Classic slip of the tongue. Almost Freudian. What he meant to say was: lame ass dummies.
Calm down relax start breathin
But you just caught your wife cheating.
Was it while you were at work?
"Slugs", not "thugs". If the Bad Boys return, "thugs" is the correct term.
Good for Beilein. Good for the Pistons.
Selfishly, I'm happy that this is the job he took as opposed to any HC jobs in the B1G.
Bad fit. Too many slugs in Detroit.
I get that people are making jokes, but this actually isn't true. The Pistons weren't good last year, but it's because they were young and inexperienced, not that they didn't play hard. They played really hard and came a long way toward the end of the season in terms of development.
Never heard of him. Must have a relative in the department.
I think he used to be at Canisius. Not sure what happened after that.
A string of assistant coaching jobs, if I remember correctly.
A good man and a good hire
I like the move
The ideal role for a man that wanted to teach basketball without all the headaches associated with being a head coach. He can concentrate on conveying the finer points/skill development without the emphasis of developing + maintaining personal relationships outside the lines.
Good for him. But I think the Cavs players made it pretty clear that his style doesn't play as well in the pros.
Seems like a pretty different sort of gig than HC though, no?
If you are teaching young NBA players that are willingly coming to you for skill development then I think it's a different story.
Draft character.
yeah, because the cavs are such a well-run organization, with a whole raft of players just ready to break through.
I'm really happy for him. This seems like as close to a perfect fit as you could hope for given where he is in his career.
It's good for him personally too. One of his kids lives in the local A2 area as well with grandkids for JB. So he gets to stay involved in high level basketball, and enjoy the fruits of family life. I coached one of his grandkids in youth sports the past year and JB was happily seen walking up and down the sideline at a lot of games. Like your average, proud, sports obsessed grandpa.
I made sure I didn't look at him during the games though because I wanted to avoid the dreaded "you did something wrong" stare
So what exactly does “in exile” mean then?
Assuming the players are willing to take instruction, this seems like a great fit for JB and the Pistons. Excellent move!!
With kids jumping to the league (incl G-League) as teens, there is little to no skill development happening so this makes sense. The riddle will be if they're humble enough (looking at you Emoni) to be taught how to play by a 70 year old.
Do you know how basketball is played today? Kids have skills coaches in second grade now. The hours these kids put in every day is nuts. The developmental league is all skils. You're allowed to practice and work with nba level coaching on a near one to one level daily.
Yeah, I know a little bit. My kid is on 2 NYC AAU squads and has been affiliated with Overtime for a couple years.
I hope this works out well for him! He's good people and deserves good things to happen to him.
Selfishly, I wish he'd stick with BTN. I love listening to him talk basketball and am sad that gig is coming to an end.
Unless he can do both.
He can do both, right?
He should do both.
He'll still make the occasional appearance at Michigan basketball games which is what I'm sure we all want to see most anyway.
I'm surprised. I thought Beilein would do one more coaching stint to get the taste of Cleveland out of his mouth.
That's a nice fit I think.
Keeps John in AA, which he loves, and also allows him to keep teaching if he wants too.
Involved a little more then just as an analyst, but not so involved that he has to be in front of the press all the time. Seems like a great situation.
The Pistons need all the help they can get...
"Bad Boy Beilein" has a nice ring to it.
