OT: Bucks Protest Game 5 to Protest Jacob Blake Shooting [re-LOCKED]
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29747523/bucks-not-taking-court-game-5-vs-magic
"We're tired of the killings and the injustice," Bucks guard George Hill told The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears.
Us too, George. Us too :(
[EDIT @6:10pm]: I'm taking the unusual step of locking this thread until 7:30pm. Emotions in the thread are getting way too heated with insults being tossed left and right; I'm going to remove the most offensive comments.
"DonBrownsMustache" has been banned.
I'll reopen the thread at 7:30 and then hope to keep it open for meaningful discussion.
Everybody please calm down and maybe reflect upon what led to these postponements, what led to the protests and unrest in Kenosha and elsewhere.
---rob f
[Edit #2 @ 7:20 pm]:. I'll be removing the lock shortly. I've removed 3 or 4 comments but when I did, some direct threaded replies disappeared with them. I've also edited out some insults in about a half-dozen posts. Two accounts have been banned and a couple others are on thin ice.
Let's see if we can turn this into a civil MGoBoard discussion about an important major sports development, instead of yet another session of shit-slinging, Ok? If we can't, it'll quickly get permanently locked and more heads WILL roll.
[3rd and final edit] Re-locking (or should I call it "red-locking?) this thread. It's essentially run its course, and though I wish to thank the large majority who kept the discussion civil once I reopened it @ 7:30, I don't dare risk it going off the rails overnight, and I certainly don't have time in the morning to weigh in. Also don't want to leave a mess for the other mods to deal with tomorrow.
Again, my appreciation to the many who made thoughtful contributions.

This most likely won't be the only team that boycotts
EDIT: All NBA playoff games are being boycotted tonight and postponed by the NBA.

I’m sure people will complain that players are boycotting now even tho the same people complained that the players won’t put their foot down before like Ali did back in the day.
kudos to them.

Good for them.
And the police chief had the gall to blame subsequent murders on the protesters, rather than the white guy that did the shooting.

Many of the people rioting are coming from out of town and identify with white supremacist groups. We don't see the anger when it's armed white dipshits disrespecting actual government property. Tells you where the priority is for the state, which is as always defending white power and wealth.

It's not dumbfounding, 1/3 of them are barely concealed fascists and the other 2/3 are lazy incompetents who would rather side with fascists than risk their cushy gig being changed where they can't claim months worth of overtime while they fuck their mistress.

It's easy to boycott when there are no fans or sponsors' lives to disrupt. You want to make a Statement with impact? Walk out right before kick-off at a packed Super Bowl or before tip-off at the Final Four.

There's a video of him on the ground being jumped on, at which point he appears to shoot a guy in the head. But the reason people were jumping on him seems to be that he'd already started shooting people.
A school shooter can't claim self-defense for killing someone trying to stop him. This is the same thing.

Not to mention that he took a gun (which was not his) across state lines to "protect local businesses." He was looking for an excuse to shoot people

If you actually watch all of the clips about the incident it's a pretty clear timeline. Initially the kid is getting chased by a man throwing stuff at him, turns around, is still getting rushed and shoots. This was the 36 year old man who died from getting shot in the head. After this, the clip more people have seen (which is often cut) happens where a group of people are chasing after the kid. Someone runs up and punches him in the head from behind and the kid falls to the ground shortly after. After that, another person runs at him while he's down and jump kicks him in the head, the kid shoots him at the same time. That person lived. The next person comes and hits him with a skateboard while he's still down, then tries to pull the gun from him. That person gets shot in the chest and ends up dying. The next person is nearby and puts his hands up. Then, he lunges at the kid while pulling a pistol and gets his arm shot. The kid then runs to the police with his arms up, ignoring large groups of people staring at him that would be sitting ducks if his intention was to be a terrorist. I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but don't be surprised when he isn't guilty of murder.

Unless you can tell me how much time elapsed between the first shot and the second, none of this helps clear anything up.
People who take loaded long guns to protests are threatening violence to achieve a political aim. People who use violence to achieve political aims are terrorists by definition. You want this to be an exception because you want this kid's aim to have magically transformed between the time when he was out there making terroristic threats and the time, moments later, when he starts shooting people.
Kid better hope for a lot of wingnuts on that jury, because most people don't like terrorists.

Can you find me a clip of him yelling terroristic threats and then opening fire on people? If that actually happened, I seriously didn't see it. Also if you don't have a video of it, why are you assuming that story is true? Everything I wrote can be clearly seen in videos.

Be careful with that comment, while you are right that SOME of the time, kids are directly influenced by their parents, a lot of the time they are not and are free thinkers themselves.
One thing I would/could charge them on is why did a minor have access to a firearm?

Parents are now often held liable for not properly storing firearms. I think that is appropriate. Kids do dumb stuff against their upbringing. Parents are culpable if they facilitate horrific damage.

Cool that they just did it with no build up. There was a lot of talk of boycotting before the bubble, there was a lot of talk about Toronto "potentially" boycotting their next game, and so on. The Bucks didn't hype it, they just straight up no-showed at game time. That's the most authentic way of going about it in my opinion. Bringing attention to the issue instead of drawing attention to individuals talking about what they "might" do, and getting themselves in the spotlight.

Nobody cares about an NBA protest. Ratings are way down. Almost no one watches anymore. And they are protesting a violent felon who had a warrant out for his arrest and who can’t follow directives by police, which is what happens in all these instances.

It's unbelievable how people go right to this argument to justify what happened. I didn't realize having a criminal record and not obeying a cop entitles you to seven bullets in the back.
The argument boils down to: obey a cop's every word or die and if you have ever committed a crime in the past you are never again entitled to due process.
