Interesting article from DFP about Tyrone Wheatley
I finally got to watch Billions. Its crazy to watch Wags character in your gif, played by David Costabile, when I've known him in more timid/weak characters (i.e. Gale Boetticher in Breaking Bad, Doug in Flight of the Conchords, etc.)
Wow, that Jon Jansen image in the video looks very *similar* to Jake Long. #DumbDFP
Jon, Jake whatever, same thing.

Don't you know? All Offensive Tackles look alike.
Real tackles wear #77
I don’t know if interesting is the word I would have used. Good article yes. Interesting? Not really. Unless someone doesn’t know about one of the best players to come out of UM.

Wow. Critical fella. How about "engaging" or "intriguing"? Would that pass muster?
Did you skip this paragraph?
It was the home of his aunt and uncle, Jeanette and Mike Boyd. He was living with them because his father had been murdered, his stepfather died of a heart attack and his mother had an alcohol problem and moved to Mississippi.
I remember back when I liked reading the DFP sports page from childhood up until 25 years ago. I cannot read them now, especially since 2008. I always liked reading Downey, Albom and McCabe long ago. A few years ago people who posted DFP links on this blog use to get down voted to Bolivia.
A few notes on this and I hope this doesn't get buried.
Wheatly won the state title in 4 events, which is absolutely unheard of. Most athletes at that level can't compete in 4 events for the toll it takes on the body.
The 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and 110 high hurdles all have prelims and semis early in the meet. This means Wheatly ran all of these, while fitting in his long jumps. Then he had to go back and run them again in the semis.
Then again in the finals. And won them all.
He ran 9 races that day. And long jump. And still beat everyone.
People at the state finals had mentioned that he finished and ran straight back to the starting line to get in the queue for the next race.
After the 100 meter dash, the girls would run, then the hurdles, then repeat itself for the 200. It is possible he only had 5 minutes or so between each race.
Yes, quite the track and field athlete. I hope one of our young RB can turn into Wheatly. There has not been a dominating back at Michigan since Hart.
I believe Wheatley dabbled in basketball as well and could even slam dunk. The athleticism of the man is truly remarkable. He still holds a few high school records in the state of Michigan, I think, although I could be wrong there as it has been a while since I've seen some of the lists.
Watching Wheatley beat Chris Nelloms and Robert Smith in the 100m was one of those things I'll never forget. I believe Tyrone was a Soph at the time while the other two were Seniors.
" Wheatly won the state title in 4 events, which is absolutely unheard of. Most athletes at that level can't compete in 4 events for the toll it takes on the body. "
1) Most athletes don't qualify for four events.
2) It's far from unheard of... winning 3 events is really common, and Wheatley is one of 8 to win 4 (including Andy Cooper who won 4 two years in a row)
During the "summer without sports" I've watched a few old Michigan games that BTN has had on with my son.
Two things he typically notes:
1) Why are their shoulder pads so huge?
2) Wow, that Tyrone Wheatley guy sure is big and fast! Why don't we have RBs like that now?
He rushed for 235 yards on just 15 carries in the 93 Rose Bowl. Leg cramps held him out of most of the 4th quarter. He only needed 13 more yards to set the bowl rushing record.
He definitely was a premier running back and one of my favorites.
Ty's OL was also very good that day.
My all time favorite MI RB. A track star who could run around, through, or away from you
The man had wheels. So many times he'd break a tackle a two but you'd think the safety or even a corner had the angle on him. But he would just run away from them.
Didn’t read the article but I will never forget qualifying for state in track my frosh year. I bought a program to keep as a memory. In was an article about Wheatley who some years earlier had won the team state track title by himself. Yup, by himself. He won the 100, 200, long jump and high jump. I could be wrong on the field events but none the less, I think he’s the only person to pull that off in Michigan high school track and field.
There's so much more about Wheatley. He also played LB in HS, but was moved back to DB because he was taking too many cheap shots at the bottom of pile-ups.
