BIG B1G news: SEC CFB going from CBS to Disney/ABC
This will have a huge domino effect on other conferences. And Gary Danielson.

why such a domino effect? to where/how?
December 20th, 2019 at 9:00 PM ^
Will be curious to see if ABC/ESPN keep the Big 10. I'd also assume SEC games will dominate the ABC saturday night games.
December 20th, 2019 at 11:08 PM ^
I assume the SEC prefers keeping their prime game in the afternoon. Presumably they're the ones who chose that slot in the first place with CBS. Also I think I read B1G ratings were up with the move to noon for a big game on Fox. Not sure why all the big games moved to nighttime for a couple years. Competing with each other. Seemed dumb. Although I prefer night games because they're easier for me to watch.
December 21st, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
Your last sentence is why the big games moved to night. They are easier to watch for most people, so it brings in bigger ratings.
And I'm not sure if the SEC really wants their games in the afternoon. CBS was contractually limited to only one SEC primetime game a year. ESPN wasn't. If ESPN/ABC gets the Tier 1 SEC package, wouldn't be surprised if there was an SEC game in primetime every week. More eyes on the SEC is big for both the SEC and ESPN.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:41 PM ^
It's really not that big of a domino effect. What ESPN/ABC is picking up here is the right to have first choice of the SEC game of the week, and a couple of primetime SEC games in addition to what they already have. They already had SEC rights (they also own the SEC Network), but CBS had an additional game plus first choice every week.
CBS will save their money to retain their NFL rights, and ESPN and Fox will likely continue to split the Big Ten package with Fox keeping the first pick they currently have. Fox will also have to pony up to hold on to their NFL rights and fend off any advances from ESPN/ABC there as well.
December 20th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
Thank goodness. Disney ruins everything it touches so this is the end of the SEC.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
Now if they could only give OSU an exclusive TV deal as well.
December 21st, 2019 at 12:52 AM ^

ESPN taking over full cocksucking duties.

Who is left to fluff?
December 20th, 2019 at 10:48 PM ^
I wonder what NBC would do if they had more than just ND games. They've got NBCSN and USA Network so they could make a serious bid in the future for conference rights.
December 20th, 2019 at 11:35 PM ^
NBC appears content to stick with the South Bend Conference.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Does this mean Brad Nessler comes back to ESPN? Solid PBP guy.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
No one has any idea. All we know is that CBS has walked away from the table for negotiations for the next SEC contract, which doesn't even start next season. Whether they pick up another college football property or leave the sport is completely unknown. Even CBS doesn't know the answer yet.
If they do drop out of college football, Danielson might become a free agent, though Nessler would slot in nicely as an NFL Pbp man and Danielson may wind up taking that route as well, albeit as a less comfortable fit than Nessler.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:17 PM ^
Danielson was the color commentator for Lions preseason games before Spielman. He wasn't bad, so I think he could readjust to the pro game.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
So Fox will take on B1G night games. Joe Buck announces Michigan games. Big 12 and PAC 12 go to whatever other networks take them.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
I logged in to just say, Fuck Joe Buck. I'd rather listen to Brandy and his sack tine on the radio then listen to that d-bag.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:27 PM ^
I’m not a joe buck fan either. I was being ironic. Thanks for the downvote. Points are broke again.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:57 PM ^
Lolwut, you mean a guy that actually commentates games well? There aren't many of them. Thankfully decisions like this aren't left up to kids like yourself
December 20th, 2019 at 10:02 PM ^
i don't get the joe buck hate, either. what did/does he do to get all that? seems okay to me, football or baseball, not that i watch a lot of baseball.
December 21st, 2019 at 12:06 AM ^
I've never really cared for him because he's just a generic, cookie-cutter announcer, who got his job because of nepotism. Also, as the local play-by-play announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals, his bias was apparent on the national telecasts. In the same vein, I didn't like Chip Caray when he was a Cubs announcer, also for the first two reasons. Caray was objectively bad, though - much worse than Buck. It's not worth getting worked up over it, but I'd prefer someone with a bit more personality. He's no Vin Scully.

Just saying you disagree would suffice. No need to be an ass.

December 20th, 2019 at 10:44 PM ^
Fox already has these rights. And has had them for years. The Game has been on Fox since 2017. But rather than try and compete with SEC games at night, they opted to put their best Big Ten games at noon every week to bolster their pregame show.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:20 PM ^
This is not quite accurate. The big news is CBS walking away; the tweet offers ESPN/Disney as a "probability." That seems reasonable, but until the deal is signed there is still room for CBS to come back, Fox to jump in, or some mystery third party to rise to the occasion.
Not a likelihood, but a possibility.
It is a sign of my old age that there are times I still feel like CBS yoked up with the SEC kinda late. They were, of course, a leading broadcaster for years when I was a kid, but then they mostly dropped out of college football (taking that theme music, which I loved, that only popped up late in their Musburger run, with them) until they jumped back in with the SEC in the late Manning era. They also had a Big East contract for a while, prominently during Michael Vick's stint at Virginia Tech.
But, of course, that isn't "recent" at all. The CBS/SEC package has been a college football mainstay for over 20 years. And, as much as we resent the SEC, the football has been terrific and CBS has done a great job.
So this is sad news. ABC/ESPN doesn't really need another prime property. Perhaps this opens a window for the Big 12 or the Pac 12 to re-assert a solid broadcast window, though. The Pac 12 in particular has to be salivating over the possibility of CBS looking for broadcast content.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:27 PM ^
CBS has great production quality. Always felt like their games just “looked” better.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:27 PM ^
its because they spend every stoppage in play pointing cameras at coeds
December 20th, 2019 at 11:18 PM ^
That seems like a reasonable take.
December 21st, 2019 at 1:53 AM ^
I'm told it just means more.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:53 PM ^
But ABC/ESPN had no prime college football properties left. They have had to deal with the 2nd tier SEC rights and a split with FOX on the Big Ten. And it showed as their selection of games the last two years suffered because of it.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:48 PM ^
Exactly. And it's not likely that Fox would try and jump in to top an ESPN/ABC bid for the SEC. They also need to try and outbid ESPN for Tier 1 Big Ten rights, as well as hold on to their NFL rights, because ESPN/ABC is gunning for one of Fox or CBS's packages as well.
And all of these networks need to worry about Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google deciding they want to try their hand at rights. There's a good handful of people that think NFL Sunday Ticket will go to Netflix.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
The quality of the video, replays, camera angles, etc, are very good. But the announcers, especially Gary Danielson, suck.
IMO.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
Actually CBS will be the Online State U network. The little 13 keep fox.
December 20th, 2019 at 9:36 PM ^
December 20th, 2019 at 9:52 PM ^
I'm not surprised as ESPN needed either the SEC or Big Ten 1st tier rights moving forward. It would have put them in tough spot if CBS retained the SEC now and left them in a future bidding war with FOX for the Big Ten.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:04 PM ^
Gary Danielson is the color commentator, right? I was watching an Auburn game this past year where he was hysterically laughing as a student photographer was passed out on the sideline after being demolished by a player. Would be nice for him to be unemployed.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:26 PM ^
He apologized the next week and admitted he didn't really understand what had happened.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:25 PM ^
you'll see no difference in the ESPN bias, carryon
December 20th, 2019 at 10:27 PM ^
This likely means more midweek games. Which I'm okay with! Games like Memphis/Temple at 3:30pm on ESPN2 are going to get bumped. To ESPNU or to a Friday night.
C-USA already went to CBS College Sports.
I also think we could get two primetime games. One on ABC with Fowler and Herbie and another one on ESPN with a new big time pairing.
I also like this because too often you end up with OSU being the late game 3 weeks in a row or you get a Clemson/Syracuse or Miami/VT because there's nothing else.
With the SEC fans pushing for night games you'll have better options. You all can hate all you want, I'd much rather watch Bama/Texas A&M or Georgia/Auburn than Clemson beat the shit out of a random ACC team or OSU vs. another meh Nebraska team.
In fact...change all of the time slots for ABC, ESPN and ESPN2.
ABC: 12pm (ACC or B1G)/4pm (Big XII or SEC)/8pm (top matchup of the day)
ESPN: 11am (ACC or B1G East)/2:30pm (B1G West or Big XII or SEC)/6pm (2nd best matchup of the day)/9:30pm (PAC-12 only)
...put the final hour of College Gameday on ABC.
I'd start at 11am EST for ESPN2 as well. That gives the SEC the 6pm kicks they want.
ESPN2: 11am (ACC or B1G East)/2:30 (ACC or B1G West or Big XII)/6pm (SEC only)/9:30 (PAC-12 only)
In this dream ESPNU mirrors ABC with the 12/4/8. Because you can't have B1G West teams kicking off at 10am local. There has to be an option for that sleepy Iowa/Northwestern game that we're used to seeing on ESPN2. That keeps their 11am local kick, but just on ESPNU.
Okay... I'm done. Happy holidays everyone.
December 20th, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
Good, stick these SEC bastards with Beth Mowins. Bama fans deserve that shit.

Here's a hawt take....
Every network hates Michigan and wants us to lose (glee-fully) and is biased in their announcing against us.
These past 5 seasons have been the WORST. I have DVR'd games and re-listened to announcers bash us (passive aggressively) - even when we make good plays! It's about haters -- everybody hates Michigan and it is accepted hate speech/crimes against us. What's worse - judges that would rule for hate crimes are Buckeyes/Spartans that would rule against us and gleefully snicker as they bang their gavel to strip the cloth from the eyes of lady justice --- to unbalance the scales once again....
ANY former Buckeye (Spielman / Herbstreit) are haters of Michigan and will be FOREVER. They get their jabs in EVERY game if you listen. Every Michigan game for the past 5 years that's had a 'former Buckeye' announcer has made me sick. What's worse is when Griese / Dez / Woodson criticize Michigan.... gah.
+++
Gary "the loser of West Lafayette" Danielson?? - Gary "the SHAME of Divine Child" Danielson???
--- don't get me started on that puke.
I was a teenager at a Lions practice/fan event in the early 80's and saw him push away a 10 year old kid after practice who was looking for an autograph and say "Get away from me kid".
This is before everybody 'proved everything videoing on their phones' - but, it happened and after that any time for the past 30+ years I've heard or seen Danielson - I say a little Haitian witchcraft voodoo curse against him and his family. Since then, I knee at the shrine of Bobby Layne each Sunday morning cursing the Lie-down to lose yet again forever.
ESPN/Disney is where it's at -- Michigan and BigTen better get their brains on and build the relationship there.... I mean, Baby Yoda + Michigan football intro segments get us some cruits... Youth is king.
Go Blue.

If I were an SEC person I would applaud this move. That CBS game of the week is garbage mainly because Alabama lover and apologist Gary Danielson is awful.
