This is awesome. Hope Alex is able to host it.
November 18th, 2019 at 8:31 PM ^
The unspoken subtext here, I suspect, is that this might be the last major thing Alex does.
No info, but that wouldn't surprise me at all. And if so, great way to cap his career.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:01 PM ^
My thoughts exactly. It would not shock me at all if he more or less is done after this.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:24 AM ^
I hope it's not true, but there is a reality to the cancer he is struggling with. Makes me very sad.
November 19th, 2019 at 9:30 AM ^
I taped in late September, my show hasn't aired yet. Alex had just started his second round of chemo and admitted he might struggle. Had a few slip-ups he had to dub over, but he was a champ and powered through all the games he had to tape that day. He alluded to this GOAT matchup when talking to us during the break. Pretty sure it's already been taped or was taped shortly afterwards...they are on a 2+ month delay.
I think James will win, but the questions are gonna be ridiculous. The skin-deep knowledge that usually is enough to get most of the clues might not be good enough...pretty sure Ken and Brad best James on that front, but James will be quicker on the buzzer.
Should be fun to watch.

It's been said many times, but Alex is an inspiration. Congrats on getting the call.
November 19th, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
Thanks! Took me about 7 years of trying.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:49 PM ^
Yup, hope so. I've got to think this is his curtain call. Very bittersweet for us J-philes.

ENGLISH MOTHAFUCKA!! DO YOU SPEAK IT??
November 18th, 2019 at 8:27 PM ^
How do you know he is from England?
November 18th, 2019 at 8:33 PM ^
Thank you!
November 18th, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
Yeah, I had to squint my way through the OP. Sheesh.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:33 PM ^
...asks MGoUser "northernmich", who just earlier this afternoon posted an OP with this title (lacking a question mark):
If Michigan went to the Rose Bowl, would it be "meaningless".

It's the Daily Double?
People who aren't accepted to Michigan wear this color.
What is _ _ _ _ _ ?

Those were some of the best SNL skits ever.

Sweet
November 18th, 2019 at 8:37 PM ^
I thought the end zones were BLUE?
November 18th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
I'd guss KJ is a 3-2 favorite?
November 18th, 2019 at 9:14 PM ^
Holzauer is ridiculous, I'm not sure who the favorite would be. Wonder if Jennings is practicing the new-age method of going to harder questions first and seeking out Daily Doubles.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:43 PM ^
No way, man. KJ is methodical AF, but Holzauer is a force of nature.
(EDIT: replying to Wolverine Arrogance)
November 19th, 2019 at 12:13 AM ^
Rutter has still never lost an official match and has beaten Jennings head to head twice I believe.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:17 AM ^
Rutter came up in the era when Jeopardy champions were retired after 5 straight wins. Who knows how many games he would've won in a row if he'd played a few years after he did? He's tough.
November 19th, 2019 at 7:39 AM ^
I would not sleep on Brad, but a lot of this is going to be buzzer speed and timing. Ken noted during Holzauer mania that buzzer speed slips even as you accumulate knowledge. It's like becoming a craftier veteran, the legs go, but you learn how to do other things to make up for it. That can win you a lot of games, but if you come up against someone who has all of the skills to made you great when you were younger, well...
November 19th, 2019 at 8:23 AM ^
So much of being successful at Jeopardy is timing when you buzz in. Jennings, Ruter are masters at this. When those guys played Watson, the IBM supercomputer, the strategy they both resorted to as they fell behind was to buzz in as early as possible and then hope to provide the correct answer, which ultimately didn't work.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:00 PM ^
I think ken Jennings said recently that he is far enough removed from his jeopardy experience where he felt he would be no match for James.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:53 PM ^
i agree with this. personally, i am not nearly as informed on more recent pop culture or other topics as i used to be in my formative years. wasn't ken jennings' run about 15-20 years ago?
November 18th, 2019 at 10:10 PM ^
That would be fun to watch. These guys are walking encyclopedias
November 19th, 2019 at 3:17 AM ^
Or, walking Googles nowadays. ; )
November 19th, 2019 at 6:20 AM ^
I can't help myself......
November 19th, 2019 at 6:21 AM ^
James is an absolute machine. I still think he tanked when he lost to end his streak. This will be fun to watch.
November 19th, 2019 at 7:30 AM ^
If James WANTS to win he will. When he lost to Emma to break his streak he didn't even seem to be trying. As Alex pointed out, this latest tournament had James win 4 matches and earn a fixed $250K and was "taking a pay cut".. During his original streak he earned almost 80K per show. Unreal.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
He didn't try to lose to her that's so ridiculous. Why does everything have to be a conspiracy nowadays. Heck she almost beat him recently in the tournament they just had. Either way game he lost also broke completely wrong for him as he answered more questions which happens
November 19th, 2019 at 8:13 AM ^
James will be the betting favorite in this guaranteed and likely by a lot too.
He's not only in "shape" right now with it but most folks will bet him due to his most recent run and all the fanfare behind it.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:34 AM ^
I don't think he's a slam dunk winner in this scenario. He won't be able to control the board the way he did during his run when he's up against players of Jennings and Ruters caliber. Even in the most recent Jeopardy champions tournament, he was given a pretty good test against Emma Boettcher, the woman who ended his win streak.
