Rashan Gary in Car with team mates and weed
On ESPN there is an article confirming 3 Green Bay Packer pulled over for speeding and something else “Green” was in the car with them. It’s not legal in Wisconsin.....yet.
According to incident reports from the sheriff's office obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Smith and teammates Rashan Gary and Kingsley Keke were returning from a trip to Chicago when they were stopped for going 81 mph in a 60 mph zone. The officer who stopped them smelled marijuana and told the three men to get out of the car. They were briefly handcuffed.
According to the records, none of the men appeared to be high, and no marijuana was found on any of the men. The car was searched, however, and a duffel in the trunk was found to contain three hollowed-out cigars containing marijuana and a vaping device. Smith, who was the driver, took responsibility. The three were released after he was cited.

Are we still at the point where we tsk-tsk professional football players found in a car with, gasp, marijuana?
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:03 AM ^
If your employer has a policy against using marijuana and it's still illegal in your state, then yeah, tsk tsk. And it's not so much smoking pot as it is violating laws and policies (edit: and getting caught) as outdated as they may seem.
I get it, people smoke pot. It's legal in many states. That doesn't change the fact that it's not legal everywhere or at a federal level (yet) and that the NFL (and many employers, in fact) still have drug policies which include marijuana.

That line of thinking is what allows authoritarian governments to oppress people the world over.
If a law is stupid on it's face I don't feel any obligation to follow it. And employers shouldn't have a right to regulate their employees behavior when they're off the clock.
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:55 AM ^
Good luck with that.
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
That is exactly right. They can abide their own shitty laws. I will continue to scoff at them.
November 2nd, 2019 at 11:21 AM ^
This is a dumb idea.
November 2nd, 2019 at 11:49 AM ^
“If a law is stupid on it's face I don't feel any obligation to follow it.”
And nobody should feel any obligation to give a shit if you get arrested for not following it.

When an employer has a huge public image, if they think it is better for business to not have players smoking weed, that’s their choice.
When you have one potential employer for you job, violating their rules is a stupid move.
That being said, weed should be legal. Until then, NFL players should be smart enough to travel with one non-player friend that is willing to take the charge and be compensated well by their buddies for doing so.
November 2nd, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
Employers can set conditions on behavior as part of your employment contract. You have the option of accepting those conditions or working elsewhere. That is not oppression in any way.
November 2nd, 2019 at 9:12 PM ^
LMAO...in representative democracies, we elect people who pass laws. If you don’t like the law, elect new people. Disregarding the law is a bad idea. I wouldn’t tell people that in the real world. They’ll form an opinion that you’re a dumbass
November 2nd, 2019 at 11:58 AM ^
Agreed.
If you like to smoke the stuff (stupid habit if you ask me, but anyway...), then don't work somewhere where they require you to not use it as part of your contract. If you break the contract, you get what you deserve. If you think it's a stupid part of your contract, then you have the obligation to try to renegotiate the contract instead of just breaking it. You can't break a contract just because you don't like it. Otherwise, laws and contracts mean nothing.

you act like Gary had a choice of where to play...
November 2nd, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
He wrote work. Being drafted in the NFL does not preclude him from following other careers paths.
November 2nd, 2019 at 12:55 PM ^
Sure you can break it as long as you don’t get caught.
November 2nd, 2019 at 3:26 PM ^
Yes because we totally throw the book at politicians, lawyers, and rich people that break the law all the time (eyeroll)
November 3rd, 2019 at 1:03 AM ^
I disagree.
The law needs to pull its head out of its ass and perhaps the nfl too.
please stop wasting the taxpayers money and time.
November 2nd, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
For having it in the car? No.
For driving under the influence? Absolutely.
It appears nobody was high, which is good, but I'm all for throwing the book at anybody driving while high or drunk. They're a death machine.

And he disappoints again. look what Bosa is doing in San Francisco. Gary is doing nothing in Green Bay.

Got news for you: Frisco's success is a lot more about the offense than Bosa, buddy.
November 2nd, 2019 at 12:18 PM ^
Really? Going into Thursday the Niners were #1 in total D and #2 in scoring D and nationally Bosa's name is being thrown up for DPoY. The offense has played well also but ignoring that a rookie has come in and played great because he went to a rival is silly.

This year, a court ruled smelling weed isn't probable cause for a search. They should file a complaint and the officer should be censured.
November 2nd, 2019 at 9:57 AM ^
Probably the excessive speeding warrants a search though?
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:00 AM ^
Nope. Speeding only warrants a citation.
And according to the court, it doesn't depend on legality in the state, nor should it. 4th amendment has precedent over all of it.
November 2nd, 2019 at 9:57 AM ^
Depends on the legality of marijuana in your state. Some states it's completely legal, some states it's still a misdemeanor and some states is only a decriminalized violation.
November 2nd, 2019 at 9:59 AM ^
If it's the Maryland case from August to which you're referring, they ruled it's not probable cause to frisk an individual, but that it is cause to search a vehicle. The latter appears to have happened here.
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:01 AM ^
Hm - you're right. I misread then. Carry on.
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:52 AM ^
I'm hoping that exception goes away in my lifetime. I see it abused on the regular by cops.
November 2nd, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
A state court or federal court? District court or Court of Appeals?
November 2nd, 2019 at 10:25 AM ^
Thats where you wrong friendo. Smelling weed allows for an officer to search the vehicle to find that illegal substance. The officer is allowed to search that vehicle wherever that substance could be stored. I dont really care about weed personally but that officer has a job to do and has full legal authority to detain them if he feels there is crime afoot. He didnt and they were let go and a citation was issued. No big deal just pay the fine and move on.
