OT: Thoughts on Rumors of Rose to Pistons?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on June 30th, 2019 at 6:58 PM

Surprised I hadn't seen a thread on it yet (unless I missed it) but what do people think about the rumors of Rose to Detroit?

I'm not a big NBA fan so I don't know how much of a factor he would be with his injury history but are people generally excited or is it seen as a bad move?

If he can stay healthy he’s a top 20 player. But I don’t see a market for an aging, injury prone non stretch PF with a big contract.  He’s only got 1-2 productive years left before he falls off a cliff, if not earlier. I’m fine with the Pistons riding that and then blowing the team up. Get some semi entertaining basketball and not a 15 win team with the hopes of winning the lottery.

It's an upgrade at backup point and a decent contract.  Though speaking of draft steals it's worth remembering that we took KCP over the Freak and everyone was up in arms because we didn't take Trey Burke.  And 14 teams passed on Giannis so nobody knows jack.  I do think the Pistons got a steal this year.  Not to say he's gonna be Giannis but he has a similar profile.  Young, long euro that oozes talent.  Some risk but massive upside.

I can't believe he's only 30.  Seems like he played 20 years ago, but hasn't been anything other than an injury waiting to happen for the last 15.

  1. The Pistons are handling the rebuild even worse than the Wings have. At least with the Wings they eventually sorta realized they had to bottom out. The Pistons still think they can incrementally build up their mediocre core. In reality though they likely just realize that being team #15 out of 30 allows them to sell the illusion of competitiveness which keeps operating income higher than it would be when you tank. Of course long term its a good way to bleed the franchise dry. A decade of irrelevance affects fans more than 2-3 years of being bottom feeders.

Tanking doesn't guarantee you'll get the #1 overall.  The Knicks basically tanked and got the #3 pick.

They're saddled with a number of bad contracts and their overall roster management pre Ed Stefanski was garbage.

Signing Rose to a 2year deal isn't bad.  He gives them a little extra scoring off the bench when healthy.

I tend to be pro-tanking if you're just going to get swept in the first round or miss the playoffs by a couple games.

However, I agree that the case for tanking isn't great. The Knicks tanked and they're in tears right now. The Suns have been horrible for years and after getting Devin Booker have had two top 4 picks and a #1 overall, and just picked #6, which they traded away. Their tanking this year made them the 2nd worst team in the league and THAT's what they got? I'm not sure anyone believes they're about to break out.

But the Pistons, man, it's rough. They'll have all sorts of cap space NEXT year when no one of note will be a free agent. They'll overpay for someone horrible because guys that are garbage are making $30 mill/yr in the league now.

So from the prospective of a player, I can be ok with D Rose for a quarter of that. But I don't have my hopes up of the team making it to the 2nd round. They'll have the 15th pick and take a point guard that can't pass or shoot.

He's not a particularly good player anymore (he had a resurgence last year offensively but he's still a guy with physical limitations due to injury) and he also gang raped at least one person and didn't really seem to get why it was that bad.  So no, not excited about him one iota.
