X’s Dad Tweets and Deletes That It’s Howard
What about Z's dad? Did he have anything to say?
He's says it's Cooley
They’re finalizing everything now. Players are excited. Hoping to keep most of the staff in place.
Is this a guess or do you have info on the matter?
I’ve got solid info. You can check my previous comments on the coaching search. It was going to almost always be Howard unless they hit on one of the home run guys.
I think its safe to talk now. Have a friend who works for the Heat who told me Michigan officials/search firm people have been talking to Heat officials for a few days. Heat contact says he thinks its done.
I do appreciate your info but you said 48 hours ago Cooley wasn't getting an interview and he literally met with Warde yesterday.
Look. Going to let you put pieces together. You've seen all of the info about (1) Warde knows/is friendly with Cooley from his Big East days at UConn (2) The DeFillipis guy who is part of the search firm we hired has ties to Cooley. (3) Coaches who are being pursued by other schools often receive raises and extensions. Do the math man. He was never a serious candidate.
He was never a serious candidate but was one of only two coaches to interview for the job.
Got it.
I have interviewed plenty of people that I never gave serious consideration to offering a job. I'm sure the same was done to me when I interviewed for other positions. It happens.
I have interviewed hundreds of people for positions over my career, and I have never done it with a person that I had no intention of hiring. There were plenty where within 5 minutes, I knew I was not going to hire, but never going in. Why would I waste my time doing that?
Two examples off the top:
Internal candidates that have to remain on your staff, but you don't want to promote. Sometimes the conversation is productive ("this is what you'll need to do to advance").
Friends/relatives of people that you don't want to piss off - ie, a courtesy interview.
Telling your staff "this is what you'll need to do to advance" is for reviews, not interviews.
If I was doing a favor, I would get that person an interview, but I would not participate in the loop.
It is a colossal waste of time on both side to interview someone who you know going in are not going to hire. I doubt that Warde would be into wasting that much time, especially with logistics involved.
Clearly you've never had a boss who wanted his nephew to get some experience, or a coworker's friend who you had to talk to as a favor. Or, in Warde's case, a friend you could get a raise for simply by giving him a sham interview.
I'm not saying the Cooley interview was definitely a sham (though it certainly could be), but the idea that it's totally inconceivable that someone could be interviewed with the interviewer having no intention of giving them the job doesn't mesh with reality.
I used to think a lot of the stuff you wrote was an act, but you are just a miserable fuck. Dude, try and find a little enjoyment out of life. Really, things aren't that bad.
Are you thick?
Jesus H Christ do you have a learning disability?
Fascinatingly, Vinny was getting killed in another thread for complaining about this very thing.
4/12/19, can you please leave and never come back?
Plus Cooley is conveniently in Miami at the moment for the Big East meetings.
Sounds like Cooley was the Michael Scott of this hiring process.
So you’re saying he shared some fettuccini w Warde.
It can be true that Cooley was never a serious candidate and also true that MJ14 was wrong in saying that he wasn't going to get an interview.
I’ll say this I didn’t think Cooley would be interviewed unless other options fell through, but I don’t know Warde personally. He was far down the list, as I mentioned, but I’m not extremely surprised that Warde did a quick interview with him. As others have said, Warde seems to be close to Cooley and he was a somewhat qualified candidate and I imagine the search firm told him to interview Cooley. I think the Cooley thing was a spur of the moment, kind of a get it out of the way kind of deal. As people have noted Cooley is out doing Big East stuff so the interview was not really planned out. Cooley was never going to be considered over Howard, but what does it hurt to interview a friend who is qualified? I can’t say I know Wardes exact thinking on the Cooley interview though.
Didn't hurt that Cooley got extended and raised to boot....
Or to get everyone freaking out about Cooley so they can breathe a sigh of relief with Howard.
Maybe Warde agreed to it before knowing whether Juwan would get offered the Minnesota job?
friendly reminder that having inside information does not mean you have the full picture. if you had the full picture you would in fact be Warde Manuel or Juwan Howard or an immediate representative thereof.
this is what people seem to get wrong all the time. if person X has a connection to get inside information from the athletic department it doesn't mean they have EVERY bit of information or they can't have been mislead on a certain aspect, or that things can't be fluid. it doesn't take much effort to detect if someone seems to be a credible insider or spouting nonsense. Some of us should be very good at detecting someone who's spouting nonsense.
I do appreciate you compiling tweets that agree with your position and posting those as board topics. No, wait, I don’t.
You use, "literally" too often and poorly.
Nobody in your life appreciates you, ever.
Stuff surmised from his history: Called the "No Shaka" thing before people jumped ship on that. Ruled out Marshall and Marshall has never been a factor. Said that Yak would interview at Texas but that Warde would match whatever Yak was offered assuming Yak didn't get the HC position. Said that Billy Donovan was definitely contacted but it would take $8 million and Donovan thinks he'll stay in the NBA even if he gets the boot in OKC after this year.
So far so good.
Also said Archie Miller was in deep trouble in Bloomington. Possible, reasonable, but Miller is still employed so there's no way to verify it.
MJ14 has seemed to be 'in the know' on this.
MJ, can you share any more possible details?
I’m told what’s being discussed is a 3 to 4 year deal compensation somewhere in the ball park of 9 to 15 million total over that time period. Sorry that’s not more specific, but that’s about all I’ve got at this point and it’s still being worked on.
I’m not 100% sure what this news does for Wilson, but I believe he’ll be playing somewhere else next year. Though it is early for that too, and as long as Yaklich stays they have a fighting chance to get him back in the fold. Yaklich will get offered a nice raise and I’m told he’ll consider staying for a season and then look at becoming a head coach somewhere next season. Haven’t heard a ton about Saddi right now so I don’t want to speculate but I’ll be interested to see what he does.
thanks MJ, very good stuff. appreciate you sharing.
No problem, just sharing what I hear and trying to keep my own thoughts and opinions out of it. In Indiana basketball is the absolute top sport, so people care a lot more about it than any other sport. I wish I had some inside info on the football team, that would be a lot more exciting to me!
MJ - I am enjoying your informative take much better than that of MSJ (Matt St Jean), that dipstick Providence student who called Cooley to Michigan this morning.
Keep the good news coming until the official announcement!
Thanks for the info, any sort of timeline for finalizing it expected?
Honestly not sure on that end. Seemed like it would be later in the week, but it’s moving faster than previously expected. I’ll see what I can find out, but I’m sure more info will start to trickle out soon from more solid reporters with details.
I think everyone is tiptoeing around the real question here so I'll ask. Do you have "We had subs, it was crazy" tattooed on your body? Asking for Brian.
3 to 4 years seems a little short to me. That's only one complete recruiting cycle. Wonder if it's a see how the first year or 2 go and then offer something longterm?
Way too early and way too much fog of war to draw conclusions. There's no way they don't offer the next HC a full deal, whatever the parties conclude that to be. Patience.
This would make sense based on the tweets that are trickling out in the Twitterverse.
YES. thanks MJ14. I pray Yaklich is staying
I believe I saw something last week that he said it would be Howard.
Doesn't Yak have a Friday interview? I would rather him get a fair shake so there aren't any hard feelings if he wants to stay on
Last Friday, I believe.
Oh, in that case, WE GON SHOCK THE WORLD!!
While Muhammad Ali and the Fab 5 are guest staring on the Cosby Show
All you need to do is fend Texas off for this year. Pay the man, give him "Assistant Head Coach" title, etc. Then next off season I think you kind of hope he takes a HC job elsewhere so he's the obvious choice in 3-5 years when Howard might jump to the NBA.
