Big Ten Coaches / UM Non compete clauses?
There are rumors Ryan Day wants to hire Al Washington- does anyone know if Michigan coaches have non compete clauses like in the SEC with Dan Enos who had to join us to invalidate his non compete? So Al Washington wouldn’t be able to go to OSU directly?

Yes, they do. They are not allowed to compete with OSU.

I laughed... then cried.

All good humor has an element of truth. Sadly.

It's weird, but don't tell Scotty!

Why would OSU be talking to him if he couldn't accept the job?

Weren't al Washington and ryan day on bc staff together? That's going to be difficult to fend off if day comes calling. I'd imagine they have a very good, established relationship. Plus being from Columbus, it's going to be hard to keep him.

I think you're right. Al was Brown's guy IIRC, so if Brown is gone to Temple (as some suggest) I can't imagine we could keep Al on staff.

Enos did not launder his non-compete clause by having a cup of coffee here.

Right, once the staff was fired the NCC was void.

There was enough time for half a croissant too.

Non-compete clauses are time based and can be hard to enforce. Leaving for a minute doesn’t help, especially if you stay in the same industry like Enos did
In a conversation with a Home Depot employee (at their HQ, not a store), I heard about a Senior Exec who left for Lowes. Gone in a heart beat and Home Depot couldn’t stop it. But, they did laugh at the guy for working for an inferior company! (Not my opinion; it’s theirs)

OMG you guys, we may going to lose all of our coaches. All our recruits may take commitments to our rivals. We are all doomed. Well, I came on to warn UM fans of this. Back to my RCMB or three wife beaters and eight cysts blog.

They want Al Washington so they can cut Ohio off again since he did a good job recruiting in Ohio this past cycle. Good move by Day.

He’s already playing chess, and I don’t like him.
Al Washington, making a play on Justin Fields. I hope they get smoked today in Rose Bowl.

Not sure that going after a good recruiter and the top transfer QB qualifies as playing chess. Those are pretty obvious moves.

Compete or non compete... if he’s entertaining the thought, just go. Don’t want you in AA.

No entertaining. Done deal

Have you been playing counter strike?

It doesn’t really matter. If they want him bad enough, they can just pay the penalties and deal with the lawsuit. I’d be hard pressed to see a judge issue an injunction or restraining order preventing Washington from going to OSU. Not to mention, the athletic department would absolutely ruin its ability to recruit coaching talent if they handled the situation like this.

Especially since OSU already has our playbook (as does Florida).

Interesting thought — is a playbook a trade secret? I wonder if that’s ever been litigated. Just because something is open to the public doesn’t mean it’s not protected (at least under Michigan law). For instance, the final advertised price isn’t protected, but your in-house methodology to get there is.

Looks like OSU is going to out smart and out maneuver Jimmy again.

All the coaches can stay or they all can go. There's always more. U only want those who want to be here.

Has a coach ever moved between UM and OSU with no stops in between. I can’t recall it happening.
I don’t put much stock in the usual rivalry motivation stuff, but this could be an instance where if Washington left, it could rile up Michigan in a positive way.

Does seem like kind of a disloyal and shitty thing to do. But that's business these days.

Washington’s dad played at OSU. Lots of connections to the school.

I don't know that I've heard of such clauses being negotiated in coaching contracts. Now, I have heard of coaches negotiating clauses that they can take certain jobs with minimal penalty should they become available, and indeed, the most famous example is coaching his last game - for now - this afternoon.

only lateral moves and not promotions like dc or hc

No Marcus Ray consideration? He already knows how to fix the D.
