Todd McShay: "I think it's mandatory for Shea Patterson to return to school"
“He has the physical tools,” McShay said. “The best thing that Shea Patterson could do is to go back to school and continue to learn pro-style offense and continue to develop. He has the potential to develop into an NFL quarterback. If I were advising Shea, I would say it’s mandatory to go back to school for another year, because he has a great opportunity that not many quarterbacks in the country have, to work under multiple coaches -- not just the head coach -- that have spent many years in the NFL. There’s experience there.
“He went from a system (at Ole Miss) that had nothing to do with what he’s going to do in the NFL to one that is very similar to what he’s going to do in the NFL, and I think it’s mandatory (to return), again, if I was advising him.”

I'd rather see Dylan get his shot. We're wasting his years redshirting and sitting. Not saying Shea isn't good, but Dylan is just as good, imo better and younger.
November 30th, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
Dylan's thrown 15 passes in his career. There's no guarantee he'll be better than Joe Milton after Joe completes the offseason in Ann Arbor.
November 30th, 2018 at 5:59 PM ^
There's absolutely every guarantee. Joe's not going to beat out Dylan. Save yourself the suspense. If you are hitching your wagon to Joe Milton as the future QB of this program...then, uh...that's troubling.
November 30th, 2018 at 8:10 PM ^
You don’t understand the word “guarantee.” And most other words too
November 30th, 2018 at 6:00 PM ^
Both are exciting. Dylan's collarbone is a concern moving forward. Joe Milton though is quite the prospect. If he can develop into an accurate passer could be something really special.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:01 PM ^
Why is the collar bone a concern? They heal
November 30th, 2018 at 6:13 PM ^
Yea, but it takes like 5 weeks. By that time Milton will be so far ahead of Dylan, he'll never be able to catch up.
/s
November 30th, 2018 at 6:25 PM ^
You don’t really think In 5 weeks that Milton is going to not just pass up Dylan but be so far ahead he can never catch up? I have news for you. Dylan is still way ahead of Joe and even if Shea returns next year he could very well push him to be the starter. The kid has all the talent needed
November 30th, 2018 at 6:31 PM ^
Holy shit Kev that was sarcasm, in its easiest and clearest way!
November 30th, 2018 at 8:35 PM ^
Kevin's only 13. Maybe someday he'll grow up and not be so naive. In the meantime, be nice.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:33 PM ^
Wow.gif
November 30th, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
Just ask Tony Romo
November 30th, 2018 at 7:39 PM ^
Charles Rogers (MSU WR and Lions draft pick) broke his clavicle twice I believe.
Myself, I broke both. They are hard to set without surgery, Seems like it breaks with a quartering hit or fall to the back of the shoulder, not pure 90 degree hit. Hope it heals well.
November 30th, 2018 at 8:54 PM ^
The probability of him injuring his collar bone again is very high.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:41 PM ^
I think it is reasonable to think that there is no way that Joe Milton beats out Dylan McCaffrey. Joe Milton barely (or didn't even...can't remember) complete 50% of his passes as a Senior QB...and that was with a D1 WR he was throwing to.
Joe could improve a ton, but I think it is out of the bounds of possibility that Joe can improve enough to overtake Dylan.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:15 PM ^
I think all of you are forgetting that these guys played high school football before they came to Michigan. That's 3-4 years of additional data for you. If you think there's any chance that Milton would be better than Dylan, then you're just delusional. Do me a favor. Look back throughout past quarterbacks and tell me how many went from being below 50% completion percentage QBs in HS to being elite college QBs.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:31 PM ^
No guarantee Shea is better than Milton after Milton completes the offseason in Ann Arbor either.
November 30th, 2018 at 10:47 PM ^
Yes, I guarantee that Shea is better for next year than Milton. Trust me. Shea can still improve, he has not hit his ceiling by any means
November 30th, 2018 at 6:03 PM ^
Why wait? Don't hate Shea. He did his job. It's Dylan's time.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:21 PM ^
You sir, are a fucking moron.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:29 PM ^
While this reply may have been a tit harsh, this guy is a clown. Really? We should be 100% certain Dylan is better than Shea after throwing like 10 passes in his career here? Come on, man, that is just a bad hot take...
November 30th, 2018 at 6:35 PM ^
If Nick Saban can switch QBs at halftime of a national championship game, I think we can switch QBs in the offseason without a substantial dropoff. I remember Chiefs fans who were hesitant to switch from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes because Mahomes was an unknown. Now he's an MVP candidate.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:38 PM ^
Oh, well you know, I think I've changed my mind. Since that one time that Smith-to-Mahomes change worked out, I think we should go all in and do for shits and giggles! In fact, I think we should pull Patterson's scholarship. Maybe remove him from university property effective immediately?!
Ugh...
November 30th, 2018 at 7:04 PM ^
Oh, this is not at all just a one-time thing. Look at Iowa State for the first few weeks. They thought it was smart to stick with RS-Senior Kyle Kempt because he was experienced and was the proven player. They were eventually forced to play a true freshman because of an injury to Kempt. Since that true freshman (Brock Purdy) took over, they've won six games and only lost one. And Purdy was able to post a QBR of 79.5 - 2nd highest for all true freshmen and 14th highest in the entire nation.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:31 PM ^
You’re almost as dumb as the poster you are trying to defend.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:42 PM ^
Almost.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:53 PM ^
Coward.
November 30th, 2018 at 8:18 PM ^
I'm not the soft guy that gets emotional about a QB debate on a forum. Forums are meant for discussion.
November 30th, 2018 at 8:23 PM ^
I’m not emotional at all, you’re just kind of dumb and borderline funny at this point. Please continue!
November 30th, 2018 at 8:40 PM ^
Started spewing insults, because you have absolutely no counterpoints. Have fun with your one year rental though.
November 30th, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
Good luck with your herpes. Sorry to say they last a lifetime.
November 30th, 2018 at 11:23 PM ^
Wow, I'm being met with such rational responses by the fine people of MGoGroupthink. I can now see how you got to 15,000 points.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:52 PM ^
But why take a dropoff at all? You play the best QB. The best QB on the roster is almost certainly going to be Shea if he comes back. We'll still have a year or two with Dylan.
It would be great if Shea came back.
November 30th, 2018 at 9:59 PM ^
Objective? This is all kinds of crazy
November 30th, 2018 at 6:43 PM ^
Agreed FauxMo! Shea is the best QB Michigan has had in a LONG time. His ability to throw and run is a true threat.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:48 PM ^
So Dylan can't throw or run just as effectively?
November 30th, 2018 at 6:55 PM ^
But how do you know this so definitively? You are making huge assumptions based on very limited samples. That almost never works out...
November 30th, 2018 at 8:06 PM ^
Not without breaking a bone, apparently.
November 30th, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
Perfect response. Shea ran all season long and survived. How many runs did Dylan have before breaking himself? That wasn't some credible once in a lifetime hit he took. Shea has been hit just as hard.
November 30th, 2018 at 10:01 PM ^
Wildly underrated comment
November 30th, 2018 at 6:49 PM ^
Agreed, but forget that for a moment. Dylan has shown flashes and lots of promise. But so have lots of other QBs who didn't pan out - O'Korn vs. Purdue, anyone? - and currently he's healing from a broken bone. Like, let's not ditch Shea quite yet, shall we?
November 30th, 2018 at 8:21 PM ^
Who are you and what have you done with the real Faux?
November 30th, 2018 at 9:34 PM ^
I am FauxFauxMo. Which makes me RealMo.

Clown?

Who the fuck actually thinks this lol
December 1st, 2018 at 12:52 AM ^
This off-season is going to last 9 years, we are literally approaching the long night.
November 30th, 2018 at 6:06 PM ^
You probably said this same shit about Shane morris
November 30th, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Shane Morris is not remotely close to the prospect Dylan was in high school. Try again.
