Starters for ND who were recruited by UM
Interesting article (Detroit News) on the players Michigan recruited, but who eventually went to ND. I would like to see an article pointing out the flip side of this.
Some players of note: Eichenberg, Hainsey and Bars...

Harbaugh mentioned that on 97.1 this morning. Notably the new O Linemen starters for ND this year, he recruited all of them and knows them well.

This makes me sad.

Odd that Shaun Crawford is not on the list. Wasn't he a Michigan commit at one point?
August 29th, 2018 at 9:05 AM ^
Yeah, he was committed to Brady Hoke. I don't believe he's considered a starter for ND, though.

Nice job on TTB by the way. Nice list you put together with your stat predictions

Thanks!

Magnus
ive wanted to ask this for a while. Do you have a list anywhere that has your rankings for our commits (this year and past years). I can find the individual write ups, but not a list of the player and their TTB ranking.
August 29th, 2018 at 11:34 AM ^
Here are the 2018 TTB Ratings (LINK), and you can click on the "ttb ratings" tag to go back to past years.

Really hope we are able to build out the offensive line recruiting classes in the next two years. Listening to the season preview podcast was a sobering reminder that we still have a long ways to go to build the depth we need to have linemen developing in the background and not ripping redshirts off people out of need. Some names on this list would give more bullets in the chamber. Hopefully Ed Warriner sticks around and builds that depth up for a few years

Am I wrong in thinking that the Newsome injury was the unluckiest thing to happen to us in the JH era?
August 29th, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
especially coupling that with the Devrey Hamilton flip, and losing out on Isiah Wilson in the middle of that commit-apalooza
August 29th, 2018 at 10:42 AM ^
And losing Logan Tulley Tillman hurt (his fault)
August 29th, 2018 at 11:05 AM ^
That was a LOT of OT losses in a hurry: the processed recruit (who ended up at OK), Newsome's knee cratering, Hamilton flipping, Wilson taking a check, LTT's common decency cratering... Five tackles lost in less than 2 years. Not sure how anyone recovers from that without skipping a couple of beats. And still, morans that know everything about football complain that Harbaugh has simply failed with the OL.

Losing a kid to Stanford sucks but also doesn't suck because it's one of the few football schools (perhaps the only football school) that's academically superior to Michigan across the board. As much as I bleed maize and blue, it's hard to blame a kid for jumping at an opportunity to get a Stanford degree without having to compromise on an elite football experience. Lots of recruits claim that academics are an important factor in their decision, but when they choose Stanford over Michigan, at least you know they're not bulshitting.

It definitely stung. Seems like the keys to returning our o-line to greatness will be a few critical recruiting wins from some top talent and stocking these positions with better depth so those guys can spend a year or two in the hopper before seeing the field. With a quality S&C coach in place and Coach Warriner in charge hopefully we can see some MEAT lines again. We'll find out Saturday how far this line has come in 8 months.

I saw a stat yesterday that USC hadn't started a true freshman...at any position in nearly 10 years. #teamgoals
August 29th, 2018 at 10:33 AM ^
I believe so - the last time might also have been at QB too. Matt Barkley perhaps? It's been a while since I've even thought about that name, but I believe he was a true freshman in 2009.

In 2014 they had three true freshman start just on offense. Two true freshman olineman and a wide receiver. I'm also sure that Adoree Jack and Ju-Ju both started as true freshman.

Sua Cravens started 13 games as a true freshman. Im sure Leon Mcquay or Iman Marshall started games about a freshman. I also think they had a linebacker or two around '15 or '16 that started a few games.

With any luck they'll all be sitting in ice baths on Sunday morning thinking, damn, I really should have gone to Michigan.

Our D-line is going to introduce them to Big10 and Michigan football. Lets gooobaby! Im so pumped.

Totally forgot about Khalid Kareem. Sounds like he got his conditioning right and is turning himself into an NFL prospect. Good for him.
That said, please be anonymous this weekend.

Slightly OT but I saw somewhere that the Tackle from Rice UM was trying to get as a transfer is likely to start at Texas.

Personally, I hate losing recruiting battles to ND more than I do to OSU. The latter has been a power for a long time. ND has been up and down for a long time (longer than us, though admittedly we've had rough years). But I feel like we lose more than we should to ND in recruiting. But they're HS kids so hard to really take much from it IMO.
The only ones on this list that really hurt are the OTs since we are desperate for something guaranteed to be solid at both OT positions.

Wasn't Bredeson down to us and Notre Dame at the end?
August 29th, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
He mentioned in his recent interview that one of the reasons why he chose Michigan was Mattison.
August 29th, 2018 at 10:01 AM ^
Who are the Michigan starters/backups who were recruited by notre dame?
August 29th, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
Ben Bredeson
Tarik Black (sad emoji)
DPJ
Oliver Martin
Josh Ross
I'm probably missing some, but I think Notre Dame was in the "final group" for all those guys.
August 29th, 2018 at 10:33 AM ^
Rashan Gary was an automatic bet to be on that list.
August 29th, 2018 at 10:36 AM ^
Well they offered him but I don't know how interested he was. I was focusing on guys that gave ND the time of day. It was pretty much Michigan and Clemson, then maybe USC, Auburn, Ole Miss for Rashan. Never really any traction with ND there.

Was mcgrone a lock for ND at one point?
August 29th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
He listed ND and Indiana in his top 3 he has cousins that go to both schools. The Indiana thing was just about trying to get them some extra recognition. He visited IU a few times with a bunch of his teammates.
August 29th, 2018 at 3:26 PM ^
Ah good call, McGrone should have been on my list. Idk about "lock" to ND at one point though, but definitely had an offer.
August 30th, 2018 at 7:15 AM ^
Said Jeter but then saw starters. PSA don't wake up and post
August 29th, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
They have chosen unwisely
August 29th, 2018 at 10:18 AM ^
Michigan starters who had ND offers as far as I can tell:
Defense: Gary, Kinnel, Long, Bush, Dwumfour, hard to believe they didn't offer Solomon
Offense: Bredeson, DPJ, Black, (Patterson), bueller... (this is fewer than I had expected on offense, but guess it makes sense - surprised not to see an ND offer for Ruiz)
If we extended to backups obviously the list gets much longer. The OP article is strange in light of the fact that there are a similar # of guys the other way around.

I didn't know that Blake Bars was in law school at Notre Dame. Good for him.
