Hello: Jaron Faulds, Basketball transfer from Columbia
Columbia transfer Jaron Faulds announced today he's heading to Michigan. Averaged 4.5 pts and 3.2 rebs in 14.2 mpg as a frosh. He tells me he's joining the program as a preferred walk-on and hopes to eventually earn a scholarship. He'll first sit out the 2018-19 season.

First Harbaugh doesn’t manage walk-ons correctly, now Beilein takes this kid as a walk-on? Some people are gonna be pissed!
On a serious note, welcome to Michigan!
good depth - always a good thing
Welcome, Jaron to an absolurely great university and a stellar BBall program!
Welcome aboard. Native of Michigan and was decently-rated with good size when in 2017.
Yep, at first I was like, good luck to a guy that didn't play a ton at Columbia.
Then did a little research. Big guy at 6'10 so much more difficult to come in right away as a big. Rated #7 in the state of Michigan and 322nd in the country as a senior in HS. Definitely could earn a scholarship and get minutes as a backup center, especially if he develops on outside shot in his RS year.
Solid low risk pickup.
He had a decent offer list, solid get for a walk-on.
He did? I mean I welcome the kid and all, but an offer list of:
Columbia
CMU
Cornell
DePaul
Lehigh
Kent State
Oakland
Toledo
isnt exactly what I’d call decent.
For a walk-on? You’re nuts, that’s as good as you’re gonna get.
That’s not what you said. You said he had a decent offer list (not really accurate) and then said he’s a solid get for a walk-on (accurate). The comma separates the ideas.
You didn’t say he had a decent offer list for a walk-on. Which would have been true as well.
Oakland, Toledo, Depaul, and Kent are pretty decent if he had multiple D1 offers.... I mean he's not a blue chip, but it's not some guy with one D1 offer.
About the best you could ask for in a walk on center. Actually a pretty big get IMO
When I first saw this I thought "What the hell are they doing!!!" But upon further review, I think this is a very good move. Nice athlete. Decent handle. Nice mid-range shot. Quick dunker. Okay defender. Michigan has a year to evaluate him and coach him up...sounds good to me.
Where is all the panic that we are giving up one of our precious walk on spots? /s
When Jeff George Jr. announced his transfer for a walk on spot, all the morans on the Board were borderline suicidal.
On a serious note, welcome to Jaron! Can't wait to see you on the court at Crisler Arena!
Some relevant info:
- Height: 6' 10" Weight: 220 lb.
- Position played: F
- Born: July 6, 1999 (age 18)
I didn't think he was that tall compared to Mortimer and Randall Duke.
Welcome Jaron, way to GoBlue!
Can basketball reward a walk-on with a scholarship for a year with no future guarantee the way football teams do when they've got extra spots?
Pretty sure this is the case. I seem to remember M doing a thing with Dakitch one year - a video of them making it seem like he might be in trouble before springing the good news.
Oh yeah I forgot about that. Thanks.
Wonder if that was part of the draw for him given the open spot this season. I’d also be happy if they gave it to CJ Baird for outscoring Jaren Jackson Jr. in the tourney.
Pretty sure they can as long as it's not a freshman.
Wow! Football season tickets arrived today!!!
Hoping that everyone in your family is well on the way to complete recovery from their injuries and that they'll be able to enjoy those tickets this year.
Thank you very much! I lost my ability to create new threads in here. So, I just hijacked this one lol.
I've been watching too much World Cup, I read he was coming from Colombia...good work Brendan, thanks for the update! Looking forward to hearing more about the young man!
Glad he was able to get through the admissions process. I understand that this can be quite difficult for transfers.
Not so much from Columbia. Ole Miss was a different story...
I don’t think the transfer difficulties are really much of an issue for kids coming from Ivy League schools
Pretty down good player out of Lansing area . Long arms and can rebound
Were we short on white guys? Or what’s the deal here?
Yes?
He's not using a scholarship so there's no "deal" -- this is low risk, high upside.
Why has this troll not been banned?
Buenos Dias Señor Faulds!!!!!
