Nuss's pay - not as high as rumored?
Nussmeier will not make more than Mattison, Brandon said.
“We put together a package for Doug that’s consistent with what we’ve done at Michigan,” said Brandon, adding they have not yet signed a contract.

It isn't unusual that when a new coordinator (or other employee) comes in, others with similar positions will get a raise to keep things equitable. In other words, Mattison might like this hire for fiscal reasons as well.

36th in FEI not good enough for you?
i mean, excepting for the fact he's already being paid many dollars...

almost.
January 10th, 2014 at 6:02 PM ^
I wasn't making a normative statement. Just noting that this can happen. If they did raise Mattison's pay, it wouldn't be based on performance, but rather because of an increase in the "market rate" for coordinators. I.e., this is what we're paying Nuss, so we have to pay you the same or else we're saying he's worth more.

Could anyone verify for me the pronunciation? Is it Nuss-meyer? The "i" in the middle is throwing me and I don't want to sound like a moron - I'd rather look like one here for asking.

seconded!
Also:@EastUGoBlue- that wasn't a dumb question. The only dumb questions are the ones people always seem to ask when they are ahead of me in line and my kid is about to have a meltdown because I forgot to bring Woww Woww Wubbzy into the friggin store with us.

The Woww Woww Wubbzy reference almost brought a tear to my eye...

It would sound like "meyer", yes. In German, "ei" gets the sound of the second vowel.
Actually, if we want to be really accurate, it's "noos" for "Nuss" too, as there is not really a short "u" in German either, at least not in the English sense ("u" with an umlaut is the short sound, I think).

Would it be easier if he spelled it Nussmeijer?

Nussmeijers

It is Nussmeijer's you dope. He is in possession of the OC position. Kind of like, "I am going to Old Man Meijer's Grocery Shop."

January 10th, 2014 at 3:30 PM ^
Wikipedia has Mattison's salary at $750k. Nuss was making $680k, I believe. Either he didn't get much of a raise, or Mattison is getting one as well. I wouldn't be surprised if he was offered a $1.3m over two years and someone just reported the amount, which was then interpreted as the anual salary.
January 10th, 2014 at 3:40 PM ^
$1.3M over 2 years? There's no way he left Alabama to take a pay cut
January 10th, 2014 at 3:44 PM ^
Fine $1,360,001 over 2 years.
January 10th, 2014 at 3:33 PM ^
i just think it's interesting from the standpoint that a lot of people are using the pay as the primary reason why this guy would leave alabama for michigan, and now it's possible that the pay isn't so outrageous. so you know - yay he must like michigan a lot hooray!
January 10th, 2014 at 3:42 PM ^
We act around here like Michigan isn't Michigan. The mindset needs to change. Lots of coaches would give a left ball to coach here.
On the other hand, lots of people would give the other ball to not have to deal with Saban day-to-day. I think he'd be a fantastic person to learn from, but 2 years might be enough "mentoring" for anyone.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
on the sideline all the time second-guessing my play calling, I'd be tired of it pretty quickly too. Doing what Nussmeier did is smart. Stick it out coaching under Saban for two years, learn everything you can, and move on to a better situation. In this case, an excellent, well-run program working for a super boss, and where you have almost complete autonomy in running the offense.
January 10th, 2014 at 5:03 PM ^
Some of the followers of Bama football said that Saban didn't allow Nussmeier to fully implement his offense, in their words "the handcuffs are off now". So that could be a big reason he left.
January 10th, 2014 at 7:46 PM ^
I don't think Hoke allowed Borges carte blanche either. Now I don't think Hoke micromanages like Saban, but I've always felt much of the anger on this board about playcalling was misplaced, and that in many cases Borges was following orders from Hoke, not on each individual play, but to want to use a ball control offense that uses up clock. For example, after the Indiana game there were comments from the coaches to the effect that Hoke told Borges to let the offense loose to score as many points as quickly as possible once it became apparent that the defense was unable to keep IU from scoring.
January 10th, 2014 at 5:05 PM ^
true story. saban is abusive to everyone from the lowest grad assistant, the trainers, his assistants. he is is mitch albom in a different body. i think mitch is actually a bigger jerk if that's humanly possible.
January 10th, 2014 at 5:26 PM ^
Lane Kiffin has been a head coach since he was 12. How is he going to deal with Saban?

January 10th, 2014 at 5:24 PM ^
One other--if he was on the market right now as a HC, folks might not give him total credit for the offense at ALA, saying that he was doing what Saban told him. Here, if he succeeds, he has a chance to show that he turned around the offense, and no one will say that it was just him following Hoke's orders. In other words, he gets full credit.

...but then everyone started talking money money money.
but with the way hoke runs things, the OC really gets to run the show on offense, and i could see that as being attractive - especially for a guy that's most likely looking to become a head coach in the next few years.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:16 PM ^
January 10th, 2014 at 4:00 PM ^
It's like people don't read. Everything from Alabama was saying that him and Saban mutually agreed it was time for him to move on and he was looking for a new gig, there is a reason alabama didn't attempt to counter our offer, saban didn't care that he left. I'm still happy we got him, but this isn't some coup for michigan where we convinced an alabama assistant to make a lateral move because he just loves the history of michigan football so much,
January 10th, 2014 at 4:09 PM ^
my point is only that GETTING PAID probably isn't as major of a factor as it's been made out to be (pending confirmation that mattison isn't also getting a major raise).
January 10th, 2014 at 5:01 PM ^
That's fine, I just don't think the THIS IS MICHIGAN meme is the reason he came here either. He saw an oppurtunity to continue to raise his stock as a potential head coach by working with a talented qb at a big time school, I'm happy Michigan seized the oppurtunity but this isn't some confirmation that we are still a big time name. For the record I do think we are still a school with big name power, I just don't think this proves anymore than it already existed.
January 10th, 2014 at 5:18 PM ^
yeah - i agree with you. even more so - an OC job under hoke is more of a showcase of your abilities than an OC job under saban. the hoke OC job is like a mini-head-coach job and i don't doubt this is mainly about him trying to get himself into a position to become a head coach after not getting the washington job.
and if it needs to be said, my "hooray he loves michigan!" comment was written with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
i just take issue with the "there are 1.3 million reasons for him to take this job" meme.
January 10th, 2014 at 5:30 PM ^
Sorry to say but based on the performance of the defense this year Mattison is not deserving of a raise.
January 10th, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
End if the day M got an OC that has won a BCS title and likely one fluke play away from another. Was bama loaded with talent? Yes. But he still has been the OC for a many wins over the past few years.
We don't know that he left Saban because he wanted more autonomy or because Saban is a nut
Either way I'm happy for the change

It's how CFB is now. Big time schools make like $50MM+ a year and there's such a thing as supply and demand driving it up and up and up.
