Freddy Canteen Shake and Bake Route Running
Well the embed doesn't seem to want to work for me, but here is a vine of Canteen running a route.

Impressive, but how does it compare to the original "Dream Shake"?

All this did was make me realize how much I thought he was going to be a MONSTER for us......... SIGH

Not to be a jerk, but this is literally the only play a lot of Michigan fans ever saw of Terrence Robinson from high school. That should teach us something about basing expectations off of one play... If you watch football long enough, you'll see some great plays from some mediocre football players. Robinson was better than 99% of the football players out there, of course, but this was the smallest of sample sizes.

Are you asking how it compares with Hakeem Olajuwon's move? I would say it's difficult to compare across sports.

Respect. That is some serious shake. Wow.
Thanks for the Vine...even more excited about this dude now.

For context, this guy is known as an extremely polished route runner. This is some damn nice evidence of that.
If he can block, I sense an early contributor here.

Well then, it's a good thing that Canteen is also killing defenses in every game he plays and received an offer after being evaluated in-person by the coaches for several days.
October 31st, 2013 at 1:27 AM ^
That's awesome. I can't wait to see that guy on the field in the Maize and Blue.
October 31st, 2013 at 1:40 AM ^
I can't even imagine being the DB trying to defend that.
October 31st, 2013 at 9:18 AM ^
but doesnt the DB immediately screw up by turning his back to Freddy? I would imagine an elite corner would back pedal and would thus have a much better shot of staying with him
October 31st, 2013 at 9:28 AM ^
Not a coach, but here's what I saw. This guy was playing press coverage right up against Canteen. He needed to get a better jam, but sooner or later he's going to have to turn and run with the receiver because he doesn't have the cushion to back pedal. He can also probably do a little better directing the receiver to one side or the other (probably towards the sideline) and staying parallel with him so he can't cut behind him, but that's some pretty crisp route running.

Once that kid turns his hips to the sideline, he's toast.
October 31st, 2013 at 9:31 AM ^
It's only a drill and all, but I don't know why the corner is in press. If you're going to press with that much space behind you (ie anywhere but the goalline), you need to jam the receiver; force him outside or inside, you can't just let him run whereever he wants or else this happens
October 31st, 2013 at 9:34 AM ^
is definitely overmatched (size and burst into him forces him to turn) but that is a testament to Canteen forcing him to turn hips. That's what a good route does. Then after he turns his hips, he basically does a triple shake to dust him off. I think even a D1 CB is going to have some issues with that if they try to press. Now an OSU or MSU eleite corner like Dennard, that will be fun to watch. Should be excited...that is some serious shake for a low star HS kid. Combine him with outside threats like Campbell and Drake....oh my.
October 31st, 2013 at 9:56 AM ^
Playing that tight of press coverage doesn't give him much room for a backpedal. Once Canteen gets a release he forces the corner to turn and run with him.
The corner should have tried to stay more on his inside hip. It's not good to run in front of the receiver like he did.
EDIT: I guess Canteen's first two breaks got the corner out of position and his third cut toasted him. Not much he could do with that.

He makes that move so fast it looks like an editing trick.

The WR corps should be very good as well.

but it would actually mean something to see him do it in an actual game.

It looks great on film, definitely has very quick breaks/footwork, but in these types of drills a receiver should simply be able to get open on a DB who is out in space with no other traffic.
I would not be surprised to see him see some early PT especially with early enrollment. If Harris gets back to form from his injury this year, they would look to be two for potential early playing time.

I can just imagine some defensive back strolling back to the sideline at some point - "What exactly would you like me to do here?". Canteen looks lightning fast in this clip. Very nice.

Ignore the rankings folks. Been saying this for a while. Canteen is our top receiver taken last few years. Kids going to be a star.
FWIW, his route running is better than another local who i thought the world of .... Arnett. Arnett was a VERY tough cover. Not sure what is going on with him at MSU, but i think it may have more to do with him than anything else, if you know what i mean.

1. No Seperation
2. No Seperation
3. Seperation Level: Zero
4. CB on you like white on rice son
5. Ohh...who moved the Grand Canyon here?
October 31st, 2013 at 9:00 AM ^
That type of move only works if our O-line can keep Gardner/Morris protected for that long.

October 31st, 2013 at 9:40 AM ^
You count the time it took to come out of the break not the length of the vine (6 seconds). I think the line can protect for about 2 seconds my man. Classic UofM fans here.
Yes, HS DB, yes its a practice field....but that is a D1 move, the kids an early enrollree, he has some deep threat WRs coming in with him, we have 4 and 5 star OLs that are going to be JR and SRs when this kids starts to seriously contribute with his co-recruits. If we have someone who can actually sling it (Jury still out on Morris and Speight as the second coming) we should be jacked up.
October 31st, 2013 at 1:25 PM ^
That's a great move. And it looks even better when there's no linebackers clogging up the middle.
I'm more excited for him after seeing this move, so it's not a slight against him. I see that and I think "stop and go" all day. But I'm tempering my enthusiasm because I know the QB needs time and accuracy to take advantage of his full skill set.
BTW, I doubt this kid redshirts so Gardner will be the one slinging it next year.

him and Jabril battle in practice. It will make both of them better!
