Any Word on New Preferred Walk-Ons?
Brian Cleary a QB from Detroit Jesuit has been popping up on the Scout front page regularly for months. He shows no offers but his highlights and measurables are reasonably good. Seems like a decent candidate for a preffered walk-on to bolster our thin QB depth. Any word on the street? Scout must know something - either that or he is related to one of their editors.......

It went out in the hourly text too.

Ross gave him a decent shot at about 16 seconds into the clip.
This is the first time I am hearing of this guy. Once perferred walk-ons enroll are they considered part of the team? I'm curious to see if these guys also get the S&C workouts from the coaches.

Well, not all the benefits of scholarship athletes. There is one huge difference.
To answer the OP, why bolster depth. There are 3 scholarship QBs on the roster this year, and 2-3 more walkons for depth. Add to that Morris and another 2013 guy and things are just fine.

Our depth is reasonably OK for this coming year, but in 2013 we will have only two QBs plus a (very good) true freshman. That is extremely thin. Our current walk ons are marginal and also more suited to the Rich Rod offense. Many of us wanted a scholarship QB in the 2012 class, so a solid walk on with good size would be a welcomed addition.

So the scholarship depth in 2013 (true senior, redshirt sophomore, true freshman) will be little different than the depth in 2012 (true senior, true junior, redshirt freshman) and you're somehow worried about 2013 more than 2012?
Good argument.

I agree with you. The other poster wasn't arguing about experience, he was only arguing depth.

When one speaks about depth the point being made is how far down the depth chart can we go and still have guys that we can win with. For example: having just three true freshmen at a position obviously does not provide much depth. You have numbers but no depth that you can rely on to perform.

That's right. Their cufflinks are missing the special decorative gold leaf that "full" scholarship athletes' get.

but don't want to start a new thread. I've been out of circulation for about a week - can anyone give me a quick update on what's happened with Kozan, if anything? Thanks.

I don't know if you're trying to be funny or not, but nothing has happened.

Wasn't trying to be funny, was really disconnected for a week or so. Thanks for the update.

I hope he makes a decision soon. I don't know how many more tweets about Colorado prep sports that start with "Yo" I can handle.

He's listed as the #2 preseason QB in the state. Surprised he's not getting more offers. As an alum of U-D I don't know too much about him but have heard that he's really good at making throws on the run. Would be nice to have a little more depth at the position.

Go Cubs
I'd love to see another one in the Maize and Blue
February 14th, 2012 at 8:53 AM ^
WR Bo Dever
OT Dan Gibbs
P Kenny Allen
...those 3 have all been confirmed.
I love the people that do the Scout.com search to see who's listed as uncommitted with no offer.
Nathan Ricketts, Marzett Geter, Ryan Anderson, Bill Albert, Oliver Hinkle, Donte Fox, Shaquille Joyner, Darryl Goldsmith, Houston Boone, Detrick Goff, Brian Cleary, Mark Lawson and Justen Meaders are all names that we're going to keep hearing everytime someone does one of these things.
I think people forget about Prep School, JuCo, non-qualifiers and the fact that some of these guys have committed to walk-on at OTHER schools.

What if Standifer takes Rosetta Stone? Can he play????

Mark Lawson will be a preferred walk-on at Michigan.

Is that you?

Pretty sure Ricketts went to CMU. I am a little disapointed, I played for his dad and knew him when he was just a little guy.

Ricketts already signed with CMU.

not too relevant, but since he was mentioned figured I'd post...
reason I heard is that he's from my hometown.
February 14th, 2012 at 9:58 AM ^
Wait, I'm confused, what does this have to do with Kate Upton?
February 14th, 2012 at 11:24 AM ^
Shane morris quoted on twitter saying we wont take another qb in 2013 as per the coaches words to him directly. If that holds true or not, we'll see.
February 14th, 2012 at 1:36 PM ^
We should however take an Antonio Bass. A WR who can play QB in a pinch, run the Wildcat...and also allow us to keep some of the read-option and spread option concepts in our offense.
For those who followed N'Western last year...I'm talking a Kain Coulter that complemented Dan Persa.
February 14th, 2012 at 1:46 PM ^
...we could always offer Antonio's brother.
February 16th, 2012 at 1:46 PM ^
You know anything about him?
February 14th, 2012 at 12:16 PM ^
Pretty good article about Lawson walking on. Go Blue!
February 14th, 2012 at 7:39 PM ^
Sounds like we landed a great walk-on. Even if he never finds significant playing time, he will still have a very positive effect on the team. That said, I would not bet against this kid finding his way onto the field. Sounds very determined and his size isn't that bad for a high school senior.
February 14th, 2012 at 12:32 PM ^
Or Alex Kozan?
February 14th, 2012 at 3:23 PM ^
They might take a TE and a LS or two.
