I have to say for a true freshman he is doing a real nice job thus far.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
Ya I agree. He is very sound fundamentally and has good ball skills. The more he plays, the better he will be. He will be a major contributor for the next 4 years.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
He certainly looked much more sound than the other freshman corners we have been rolling out over the last few years.
September 24th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
Are you honestly going to look at a half of play against an offense from the Mountain West (who quite a few times threw it behind and in front of open receivers) and proclaim that freshmen CB to be better than any of our other freshmen over the last couple years? And on top of that, do you honestly think that coaching is what makes a freshman good after 4 games.....after about 2 months of coaching, or do you think maybe it is because they have raw talent and that is why they look ok?
September 24th, 2011 at 6:38 PM ^
Carvin Johnson and Courtney Avery looked pretty good last year through 4 games and they played more than a half. We probably should have said they look similar to Charles Woodson
Edit: I know you didn't say he looked like Woodson, I just find it funny that already he is better than any of our other freshmen DBs when he played a half in a game in which we were up 21-0 and 28-7.
September 24th, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
I thought Carvin got hurt in the first game last year and missed several games after that?
September 24th, 2011 at 7:50 PM ^
If he were simply placed in a position against a mediocre qb that pulled the trigger for a run-dominated offense, I would tend to agree with you. However, he was placed in a position where a future Sunday trigger puller had no choice but to put the ball up, and as the greenese player in the secondary, he was bound to be tested more than anyone else.
You make it sound like his minutes were meaningless because we happened to have a lead when he came in. Nothing could be further from the truth and that's why his play was graded so highly.
As long as we're on the topics of dbs, I think Floyd shows the courage that all good corners have to have - this was actually proved against ND- and I'm gaining the impression that our secondary will become a strength in the future. Playing great cb requires the same mindset as qb in regards to having short memory. Be willing to trust your talent while playing within yourself, and if you happen to get beat on a particular play, dismiss it as being over. It's so easy to say, but very few really do and that's why it's ez to separate the above average from the rest of the pack.

Avery was not playing in non-garbage time at this point last season. As for Johnson, when he was even healthy last year, he wasn't playing corner. He was playing the LB/S hybrid spot.

Well, If we are being honest then ummmmmmmm......YES.
September 24th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
Relax Rita.
September 24th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
Amazing burn. Whenever it was posted on freep.com and mlive it was always funny and never lame, so why not here.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
Agreed. Looks very solid. Good technique. They have been calling a lot of zone coverage during his time out there, however.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
like him a lot. seems like a solid tackler. coverage has been there ad well.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:06 PM ^
Was very happy with his play. For some reason when he went in, I had a good feeling about how he would do. He looked well coached and for a frosh was competitive out there. Not overwhelmed. Good news for the defense to have him for 4 years.
Nice profile pic.

I would just like to say that I spent a good 15 seconds trying to wipe the bug off my computer screen(and trying to figure out how he got there) you bastard.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
Same here, damn you!

Yeah, it was great to see a number of CB contributors, we're going to need 'em.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
He has definitely held his own out there.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
Aggressive and quick out of his breaks. I like it.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:57 PM ^
The thing I like the most is that everytime they went his direction he was in position. On one long ball was trailing the receiver but all other times was on proper side of the ball and within 2 yards of his reveiver.
September 24th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
Good to see Countess doing his thing. They tried to pick on him when he came in.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:02 PM ^
He looks awesome out there. I am so happy he got a chance to exhibit his clear talents. I think he deserves some time every game.

I think he looks great for a true freshman. Lets get him some run.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:06 PM ^
I think you should start a petition to get him more playing time...

Keeping in mind that Ryan Lindley is the worst QB to step into the Big House possibly ever, I'd say Countess played a really good game regardless. If he played like that on the team we had last year he would've been starting. He should be really good for us.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:10 PM ^
And come on we haven't realy played any great qbs yet this year.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:11 PM ^
Ryan Lindley is an NFL prospect. A good one. How about you learn something about the team we're playing each week.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:20 PM ^
Oh well when you put it that way I'll just have to disregard all of the off target passes and ignored wide open receivers. Even his TD pass was the wrong read. Take some plays out of the "Every Snap Defense" for this game and point to something that he did right, because there wasn't much.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
Seconded. I came in to this game worried about him based on every scouting report and then he looked more like a CFL prospect than an NFL one, including all of the balls skipped 5 yards in front of receivers. Maybe he has no one to throw to but damn he didn't look good save for the nicely thrown TD and the drives once the game was out of reach and we sat back.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
But maybe, just maybe, UM had some part in making him look bad. People bitch about the defense making QBs, look good, so do we not praise them when a QB looks bad?

I am not saying that UM is entirely responsible for this, but UM should at least get SOME plaudits.

September 24th, 2011 at 3:59 PM ^
did you see our qb?
September 24th, 2011 at 3:14 PM ^
Umm, no.
Lindley will likely be in the NFL soon, he does not suck.
As hard as it is to believe, our defense finally shut down a good team. Good running back, good quarterback, servicable line and wideouts, and a better than average TE corps. Our d won a game for us, which is something I think many of us have forgotten how to recognize.
Is SDSU as good as they were last year, probably not. However, they'd be expeced to beat about half the big ten this year going into today.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
SDSU would have easily scored 40 against last years team, with all the turnovers and good field postition they had
September 24th, 2011 at 3:28 PM ^
Puhlease.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
I guess you never saw last years D.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
Doesn't mean that pretty much the same guys could account for a 5 td swing. Gerg or not.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
No the defense played well, I fully believe that. That doesn't take away the fact that Lindley missed a whole lot of what the defense gave up to him. It's pretty telling when there's an uncovered receiver standing 7 yards in front of you for a first down on 4th down in the opponents territory (first half) and you throw it across the field into double coverage. That's just to name one out of many plays.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:28 PM ^
I would encourage you to consider what applying your standards of good passing would mean if you applied them to Denard. He missed everything, threw picks, and generally looked about as bad passing as Lindley.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
The fact that Denard isn't the best passer wouldn't make me reconsider what it takes to be a good passer. If I readjusted the standards of being a good passer to place today's performances in the range of "good" I would have to attend the church of Peyton Manning.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:16 PM ^
Worst ever? Please learn what football is before commenting on things. Lindley is good. As some people say, he's an NFL prospect.
September 24th, 2011 at 3:34 PM ^
I remember people saying the WMU QB, Hiller, was a big-time NFL prospect, too. Also this year's WMU QB. It's nonsense.
