Danny O'Brien [has not made an] Announcement
With his decision in the near future (10/6), might our class be one person closer to filling up? I have read that he isnt supposed to take his official to Tennessee until after this decision date. How can that not be good news for the maize and blue?

read suggests that Michigan has taken the lead over Tennessee. I guess we'll find out in 2 weeks for sure.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
an article on Rivals front page from Josh Helmholdt suggests Tennesse has the edge over Michigan.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:18 PM ^
Considering he knows where he's going to commit to since he set a date, I would imagine no one has an "edge," I would imagine one team has a commanding lead. Anyone who words it that way probably doesn't know.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
that makes sense, the article was also published before his announcement date was set in stone. Ondre Pipkins also tweeted earlier today asking his followers if Danny O'Brien commited to Michigan, hopefully that doesn't have him second guessing his own commitment because the idea of both of them on that Defensive line is scary for future opponents.

"Ace Williams"...you have been outed.
Introducing Mark Slattery, former UM Student, Sigma Phi Epsilon brother, and village idiot. Turns out you aren't a Yale grad, industrial engineer, or NYC resident. Mark simply lives in his mother's basement out in California, making ridiculous predictions and passing them off as fact. Nice knowing you buddy...your reign of terror over UM football is over.

It all makes sense it would be a SigEp who would post ridiculousness. Scum of the fraternity system.

Hey Walter Kronkite, great investigative journalism, but I'm not Ace Williams. Went to UM, was in SigEp (and actually a brother sent this along to me), and don't live in my parent's basement (CA doesn't do basements). I do write for Chat Sports, but about Lakers and UCLA, and clearly all of my info is visible, even with a non-fake picture!: http://www.chatsports.com/writer/Mark-Slattery. They recently allowed me to post articles about Michigan, because I went there, but haven't done anything yet. Don't know who Ace is, don't really care, but keeping sitting behind your computer stalking a blogger...
September 22nd, 2011 at 12:33 AM ^
I'm also a Californian and can verify mslatts contention that CA doesn't do basements. It's one of the things I miss the most about Michigan, besides my family and UofM. A word to all you Michiganders out there, cherish your basements. Enjoy your basement beer pong games, your ability to put a pool table in your house, and a room that stays cool even in the hottest summer days. Fill up that basement refrigerator. Be glad your copper plumbing is readily accessible. In California, they bury that stuff under a concrete slab. Makes for a $$$ repair when they inevitably start leaking due to all the shaking going on out here.
September 22nd, 2011 at 12:40 AM ^
I moved to CA from Michigan four years ago, and basements are one of the most unexpected things I miss about Michigan (and the Midwest in general).
September 22nd, 2011 at 2:51 AM ^
Nice try, Ace.
September 22nd, 2011 at 8:53 AM ^
suburban San Diego had a basement. Am I wrong?
September 22nd, 2011 at 9:07 AM ^
Ah, Ace, nice to hear from you.
Since you now admitted you write for Chat Lakers, do you want to explain why "Ace Williams" twitter handle posted links to your Lakers articles merely seconds after you posted them on Chat Sports? If you are not, as you say, "Ace Williams," you must have some sort of relationship with him. Care to explain?
September 22nd, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
Last time I'll respond to you, cause my responses (somehow, unlike your posts) are deemed "flamebait"... I write for Chat Sports, so does this Ace guy. The guy who runs Chat Sports, as I'm sure you've already "researched" is James Yoder. They hire writers and communicate via phone and email. Their office is in San Francisco. I've never met him. I've never met any of the other writers. I've posted other writers articles on my personal twitter and facebook pages when I've liked them. I can only assume that's what Ace did with a past Lakers post that I wrote.
If you keep stalking me, you can see that I've written numerous things around the blogosphere, all with my own name. I don't do breaking news, or have sources. It's all my own opinion and reactions.
If you hate this guy so much, why waste time and go through all of that trouble? Maybe just email the higher ups at Chat Sports. They have an "about us" page with all of their info. Or maybe just continue to blast random people you don't know cause you made a flimsy connection, and figue you could be the Julian Assange of mgoblog...
September 22nd, 2011 at 1:19 PM ^
I'm confused.
Earlier you said you didn't know who Ace was?
September 22nd, 2011 at 1:37 PM ^
Know he's a writer on Chat Sports. Don't know him personally is what that was supposed to imply.
September 22nd, 2011 at 9:55 AM ^
Super cool story bro

But our Ace is an idiot... Now I'm all confused

I doubt that last part about pipkins. Wasn't he talking the other day about tattooing a block M on his back?
September 22nd, 2011 at 3:07 AM ^
I'd just like to say that DOB follows recruiting closely and likes to mess with people. He enjoys keeping everybody guessing so take it FWIW when trying to figure out his eventual destination.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
He already has his mind made up that he wants to commit to Tennessee, and is just going to use his official visit to get more acquainted with the coaches and players......
September 21st, 2011 at 8:09 PM ^
How dare you?
September 21st, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
Yeah, it seems like we as fans always read this optimistically. When people schedule officials to UM after their announcement date, people assume it's us because why else would he want to visit a school he's not committed to after his announcement? When it's another school that is scheduled after his announcement, we assume that it can't be that school because who would commit to a school before they've gone on their visit?
I think he commits to Michigan, but it has nothing to do with his announcement date or the schools he does or doesn't have visits scheduled to after that annoucement.

If we don't get Danny, I'd really want Yuri Wright!
Are we in on any other top DL?
September 21st, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
September 21st, 2011 at 11:50 PM ^
I really want another DL, with the depth we have.
A top guy, and one that can play early, would be ideal.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
At first I thought how you were thinking, it can only be a good sign. I then got to thinking, why would he have a scheduled visit for after his decision, unless thats where he's going to commit too.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
plus they were his leader for months, plus our guys have gotten noticeably less confident the last couple weeks.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:30 PM ^
What do you mean by less confident?
September 21st, 2011 at 8:34 PM ^
now they're saying it's a weird recruitment.
For me, this is an Occam's Razor issue. He's committing on the 6th. He's visiting Tennessee the next week. That seems to point in one direction for me. If he cancels his Tennessee visit, I'll feel differently.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
I get what you're saying, but he had the Tennessee visit scheduled before the M visit. If he wanted any suspense at all for his announcement, cancelling his other visits would be a dead giveaway.
We'll probably just have to wait and see.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
but the vibe on him has always been "he's an SEC-type guy." I'd love to be proven wrong, obviously. Just think it's a mistake for people to think he's in the bag, because none of Michigan's insiders seem to feel that way.
September 21st, 2011 at 9:49 PM ^
FWIW, doesn't he have a visit set up to ol' Sparty as well for after his announcement date? I mean Sparty is out of it and they wouldn't accept O'Brien's commitment since he is an instate guy. And as we all know, they recruit nationally.
But in all seriousness doesn't he have a visit planned/scheduled to Sparty or was it cancelled or did I dream this up or am I going crazy! AHHHHH PRESSURE!
September 21st, 2011 at 8:18 PM ^
So he's going to commit to MSU as well? Cause he has a visit scheduled there after his announcement as well.
I don't know if this is true, but on another message board, someone said that Dooley wanted O'brien to delay his decision until after his TN visit, but he didn't.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
Think he's going to UT, although I would bow down to Matt Godin's brother's knowledge, should he render an opinion.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
Will just be gravy if O'Brien drops for Michigan.
Tenn has been his leader for quite some time. No reason for him to keep his official if he's not committing to Tenn.
Hemmy hasn't really changed his tune on O'Brien...Michigan made up ground, may have caught up, but Tenn has been the leader since they first offerred.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
To be honest, I could see him committing to Michigan and cancelling his official to UT. He pushed up his decision date after the UM-ND game, so that has to be a pretty good sign.. (Unless your name is Steven Elmer, and Michigan winning that game pissed you off)
September 21st, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
I see both sides of the coin on this one. One thing we can look at is that these young athletes love to toy with the fans. They love the attention that comes along with being recruited to a high profile D1 football program. I try not to invest too much into whether or not we'll get a certain guy or not. Then there's no let down in the end. My question would be, if O'Brien does commit to UT, where do the Michigan coaches turn to?
September 21st, 2011 at 8:38 PM ^
I think it's unlikely Michigan takes another DT. I think the "2 DT" thing is limited to O'Brien. I'd guess they try to use the scholarship to land one of the Garnett/Banner/Wright/Dunn/Darboh/Payton group.
