By Rights We Should Have To Play There
never heard of it
The University of Michigan football program will open the 2014 season with a match-up against Appalachian State University on Aug. 30 at Michigan Stadium. This will be the second [sic] meeting between the Wolverines and Mountaineers at Michigan Stadium.
Sorry about that error in the second sentence above. Michigan has never played Appalachian State.
If you'll excuse me, I feel like having a seizure.

What the hell, was Delaware State not available that weekend?
August 25th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
Not that I think we'll lose......but it just doesn't make any sense. I've been trying to find a positive, but I can't find any
August 25th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Good move or bad move...I can't say I'm thrilled about the board reaction.
edit: App St. earned the right to call us up and schedule a game whenever we feel like it until we recapture this series. If you understand the idea that we should owe them a game at their place, then you should certainly understand that we can't say no to a game.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:38 PM ^
Yes, I can see Hoke now "This is Michigan! We won't run the from past. We will embrace it and smash it to nothing."
August 25th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
Compare that to the App St AD dropping this at a press conference - "we tried scheduling another game against them, but their dodging us. Guess they're scared to play us." Yeah, no one would have any fun with THAT. Luckily our athletic department doesn't wear panties like most of their fans do.
August 25th, 2011 at 9:35 PM ^
M-Wolverine gets it.
August 25th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
I think the headline would be "App State AD mistakes "their" and "they're""
But seriously folks, do you really think a jab from the App State AD presser would be noticed by anyone?
August 26th, 2011 at 8:14 AM ^
And in the Internet age if you don't think opposing fans would have a field day with it then I find it hard to believe you've lived around ND and MSU fans. Or that they haven't made fun of you for wearing panties*.
(*This is in no way to actually claim that Blue in South Bend does indeed wear panties, or if on chance he actually does, the NTTAWWT disclaimer).
August 25th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
This'd ensure Michigan would no longer have a career losing record against a (former) D-1AA team. This of course assumes that Michigan wins the game, which, if we learned anything from the last matchup, would require Michigan to have a preseason top 4 ranking. I'm glad that Dave Brandon has this much faith in Michigan to be that good in 3 years just like he has faith in Michigan to compete against Alabama next year.

In all honesty I'm not sure how I should feel about this news... after the immediate nausea subsided, I feel like it is just going to be another ill-advised non-conference matchup. I think it comes down to the fact that playing any FCS school is a mistake. UMass almost got us last year. If you win by 50 nobody blinks an eye, but if you lose... well... you are on the cover of SI.

August 25th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
I think we'll be ready.
We will prevail.
You have to face the demons you want to exorcise--and the demon we must be rid of is NOT Appy State. It is the denial that we could lose to Appy State.
Bring them in, beat them and move on.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:51 PM ^
M is one of 3 teams with a winning record against every FBS conference. We need to become the only team that is .500 against every FBS team.
To do that, we'd need to beat the following teams:
Appy State
Army
BYU
Toledo
Texas
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Texas
USC
The first group sould be easy, and our goal in the future should be to schedule games with these teams to get to at least .500
In fact, M is .500 with only a few teams, including FSU, Georgia, Miami, Mississipi State, Mizzou, Utah, and South Carolina.
I'd like to see the day when we have a winning record against every FBS team.

Maybe ASU will be an FBS peogram by then...

And here I thought we wouldn't re-open that wound. can't wait till the 2014 off season where every fucking M preview will feature the HORROR.

Sooo much tv coverage. So much interest in a game that Michigan tends to give to Eastern/Western/etc.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
schedule Oregon for the 2nd game that year, switch back to Nike, and then wear the super cool Combat Pro jersey for that game!!!

This'll be a great game for Brandon to debut the mascot.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:44 PM ^
why not just leave bad enough alone? I just received my 2nd degree from U-M, still live in A2, went to this game with my brother (alum), who was consistently shown on ESPN and Big Ten Network "high"lights of this game. Look, whether we like it or not, U-M football is inextricably linked to that loss to App State. I mocked them and that ridiculous promotion video of theirs all summer to only watch in complete and abject horror as the impossible became harsh reality. U-M is part of history because of that game, and unlike most of the positive connections with football history, this is not the case when it comes to App State.
They came in and outplayed us. We choked. We NEVER should have scheduled that game. I despise the idea of ANY FBS team playing an FCS team. I don't want to hear about the $$$, there is absolutely no reason to schedule these games. Let alone a rematch. What are we going to prove? This is a different U-M program and Armanti Edwards will not be on the field in 2014. Even if we win 70-0, what does that prove? Everyone will always talk about how they beat us first. We look ridiculous trying to reschedule this to try and redeem our supposedly tarnished reputation. We should have walked away from this one, tipped our hat to App State, and get back to winning football gams against FBS teams, something to really brag about.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
WTF. The sharp pain from four years ago was just starting to subside as that game faded into history, and now we have to have it brought up again. I'm so super excited for the lead up to this game and how the announcers will undoubtedly bring up 2007 every single time that they can.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
Just kidding.
This is nothing to worry about.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
we could still go 11-1 that year. All is not lost.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
I like it. Let's make it a semi annual game. When the series is 100-1 maybe the pain will lessen.
No losing records...to any school. Bring back all the teams with winning series records...next up Toledo...Army...BYU...USC...toASU...NC...Mississippi St...Oklahoma...Tennessee and Texas. Bring them all on until the record is straight.
August 25th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
I agree with you 100%.
See my post directly below yours - bring on all of these teams and let's fix the records!
August 25th, 2011 at 5:51 PM ^
I am going to go against everyone on this thread, and say, "Bring it."
No upside, having to hear about "the upset" for a few weeks before hand, etc . . . whatever . . . I don't like the idea of us having a losing record against a 1-AA team. Win by 50 and show that it was a fluke. I get that winning by 50 would accomplish nothing, but it would put a nice asteriks on their win (i.e.* 6 years later, the teams played again and Michigan pummeled Appy State in a 75-0 bloodbath).
I am so ok with this game!

When a girl breaks up with you who drops a class when you find out she's in it, or leaves the bar when she shows up, or turns the corner when you see her walking your way, and tells your friends you can't go to their party if she's invited...completely showing how much it still bothers you to EVERYONE, rather than just manning up and saying "hi, how you doing?" and acting like you're cool with it.

August 26th, 2011 at 7:53 AM ^
It's a pirate ship. ;-)
August 25th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
nothing good can come that game, even if we win by 60. If we lose that game, Brandon should not just be fired immediately, but forced to eat Dominos pizzas untill he pukes.
August 25th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
Even if Michigan plays App State every year for the next 99 years and destroys them in every game, no one will forget that first one. There is no revenge to be had.

August 25th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
This is great.
Winning won't wash away The Horror, of course. But this faces forward and acknowledges we're not some wounded sally who can't ever think of that game again.
We invite them back. We should win big. It won't change anything, but the fact that we don't need it to is what we're reclaiming.
August 25th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
I'd rather get a home and home with Tennessee, but assuming App St still has a decent program in 2014 I'd rather play them than some sorry-ass team like Eastern or Delaware St. More importantly, it shows that we ain't afraid of no ghosts.
August 25th, 2011 at 6:22 PM ^
not sure why everyone is freaking out, particularly when many of us (myself including) have been bitching nonstop about schedule quality.
bring 'em on. seriously.
best part is, rich rodriguez won't be around to screw it up again. wait, what? i thought that one was his fault, like every other fucking thing.
August 25th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
Except this does nothing for our schedule quality (they'll still be I-AA or barely breaking into I-A), and has the added bonus of being an excuse to replay hightlights of that game the entire summer.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
It seems clear that we're going to play an FCS program regardless. It may as well be the one we have a score to settle with.
August 25th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
RR will probably be their coach by then...
August 25th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
Now THAT would be Karma. Throw in Dennis Dixon as their OC.
They try to run that Statue of Liberty play and we snuff it out and run the other way for a TD, knocking RR out cold in the process and thus exorcising all our ghosts at once.
