Ron Zook to Ohio State?
It's not a rumor or anything, but this morning I was watching Iowa and Illinois from 2008 and I started researching Ron Zook and I found some interesting tidbits.
1. He was born in Loudonville, Ohio
2. He was an assistant at Ohio State, excuse me "Ohio"
As you know Ron Zook is on the hot seat every year and could be very possibly be fired after this year. I know it will never happen but, what do you say Mgoblog community? Am I the only one that would love to see Ron Zook in that ugly scarlet and gray?
To coach at Ohio State, you have to have some success, and probably not have been fired from your last job
Like Fickell?
Fickell has no head coaching experience what so ever and it is yet to be seen wheather or not Fickell will be successful.
Yeah, it should be a pretty stormy year for the new HC.
After his very 'meh' stint at Florida, I can't see him landing a top tier head coaching job again. Especially given his meh stint at Illinois currently.
You mean that florida team that won the NC with all his recruits?
Ron Zook is a great recruiter, and a terrible head coach. Very much analogous to Charlie Weis, actually.
Dave Wannstedt comes to mind as well.
it would absolutely be good ol' Wanny. He has been coming up short of expectations for his entire career. It would also be great payback for me as a Dolphin fan to see him destroy something I hate instead of something I love.
Hey! Same for me as a Bears fan!
How many other fan bases has he let down?
Matt. Millen. (Yes I know he's not a coach, but its safe to assume how that would turn out)
Wannstedt is great recruiter but bad coach? I dont know about that one, I thought the only thing he was ever known for was ruining RBs careers.
He got the talent to Pitt (compared to the rest of the BE); he just couldn't compete when it came time to coach. Every one of his teams was more talented than Kelly's, yet he didn't deliver come gametime with the BCS on the line.
AFAIK (and I attended Pitt) we had the most draft picks out of the BE during his years, but never went to a BCS game. That should be a good indicator of the disparity.
They question his X's and O's. He is just not a very good coach. Great recruiter, bad coach. They are all over college football.
Houston Nut at Ole Miss.
Les Miles brings in incredible classes but people do question his actual coaching (he had 2 losses when he won the National title).
It has yet to be seen how he does on the field but Lane Kiffen is a prime candidate.
Mark Stoops at Arizona. Every year we hear how talented they are and how they are going to break through and every year they end up with 5 losses.
EDIT: I almost forgot Dabo Sweeney at Clemson, Charlie Weiss when he was at ND (Miss you big guy XOXO), and Randy Shannon when he was at Miami.
He just needs a stat major/football junkie on his head set to help him with his clock management and time outs.
has really done good things with that program. They havent reached expectations in most years but you gotta understand there wasnt any expectations before he got there. 5 losses at that school might be the ceiling except for maybe a special year every now and again.
Last year was supposed to be their best team under Stoops and they started 7-1 (the loss being to 5-7 OSU) and finised by losing 5 straight games.
You are not the only one in Michigan who would love to see it, but I hate to tell you - not a chance in hell.
OSU will never take a Illinois throw away.
Whatever happened to that former U of Illinois coach who went 6 Ws 24 Ls 3 Ties from 1977-1979?
Bo brought Mo back home. Zook is better liked than Moeller ever was at Illinois. Then again, Zook has been the typical IL coach...one great season and done. Moeller never delivered the one great season.
As much as I would love to see Zook go to Ohio State, there must be mutual attraction. Zook is on the hot seat for a reason and OSU will likely shy away.
to Angry Former Michigan BLANK Hating God/Current Buckeye Program Hating God's ears...
just no. MAC with Frank Zolich maybe.
Is my best guess, he always had an explosive offense at texas tech, imagine the things he can could do at ohio state.
That sounds familiar.. coughRRcough
He just needs a defensive coordinator
I really need a picture or something to post every time my signature line comes to pass...
How long do you think this law will remain in effect for (1-3 new HC's is my guess).
Two years or a Big Ten Title Game appearance, whichever comes first.
Actually, I think Mike Leach would be a good fit, especially considering the drama he left Texas Tech with.
we thought the same about RR coming to Michigan. In reality it works out differently from on paper sometimes. I'm talking about the whole picture, not just offense, or just recruiting, etc.
If he isn't good enough for Illinois, I highly doubt he'll be good enough for OSU.
We can wish, though
Ohio State might go on to hire the guy that gets fired from Illinois? Doesn't sound logical to me.
I mean, what kind of crappy program would do something like that? ...
Mo was a UM assistant for 10 years (to make 18 total) after Illinois fired him.
Revenge by Bo was sweet that year. 45-14 and Ill was leading at half I do believe
Uhhhhh what? You researched Ron Zook AND posted this question? Zook's gone as far as he's going to go.
Sooo a coach on a hot seat at Illinois will skip town for one of the best jobs in the nation?
ZERO chance this goes down
i wouldn't be surprised if they kept Fickell around for a while. And to answer the question, no i don't think that Zook will ever coach at OSU.
I agree...I think Fickell will be there at least until the sanctions run out.
Maybe he doesn't have the greatest scheme of all time, but he coaches up 3 star kids into NFL prospects on a regular basis. I don't know of any coach that could appease the fanbase down there. You have to preach Ohio, and coach a little football on the side as it stands. Any coach coming in will be replacing Tressel, if they keep Fickell for a few seasons then Zook wouldn't have to compete with their martyred saint/dirty football coach's memory. Zook's paid pretty well at Iowa, though. It'll cost them unless he's released.
I think you mean Illinois, not Iowa?
brain fart there.
Now that I think about it they both do pretty well in getting/developing talent for the NFL.
No, I don't think OSU will be hiring an Illinois castoff as head coach
I thought Ohio State made Fickell their permanant coach for forever and ever and ever? After all, they removed the "interim" label...
that if someone was either born in ohio or coached for ohio state at one point they're automatically a candidate...
