Matt Millen says MSU is a contender for a National Championship
I couldn't make this up if I wanted to. Maybe Millen thinks that MSU is leaving the country, and playing teams around the pacific rim. I could see MSU becoming National Champions of China, although I think Shanghai would give them a pretty good run. How Millen continues to collect a paycheck, is one of the greatest mysteries of our time.
Haha I saw that. I think I also heard him say Dantonio should recruit strictly wide receivers.
An endorsement from Millen has to be the kiss of death for sparty.
is the Truth. As a Lions fan, I am find myself doubting anything he says. MSU fans are probably not happy about this endorsement.
Think: repeat of Iowa 2010
He also believed the Lions were contenders during his reign
After watching MSU he probably figured that they could of beat any Lions team he put together ergo..National Champions
i saw that on college gameday live and laughed.
i don't understand people that think he is a good commentator. i always thought his comments about players seemed really rehearsed and read from a fact sheet he read an hour ago (many commentators prepare like this but their job is to not make it sound like so).
he's as shit a commentator as he was GM in my opinion.
He might not be the best color guy in the world, but to say he's as bad of a commentator as a GM is going way, way too far. He has to be, if not the worst, among the 2 or 3 worst GMs in any of the big 4 sports (football, hockey, baseball, basketall) during my lifetime. He's nowhere near that bad as an announcer, though admittedly not great
idiot
Any mention of morans cracks me up. Awesome to see.
What do you have against the town on M-123 as you are heading up to the Falls?
It has beautiful Brevort Lake, it's right next to Lake Michigan, and has agreat little restaurant for dinner.
Great Spot! And a short drive to Pictured Rocks.
What really makes me sick about that pick was the player picked directly after him--Andre Johnson.
How he biffed that badly on scouting those two players is beyond me.
Teams don't draft on talent alone, they also take into consideration how well a player "fits" the team.
Millen was actually on the money with the pick because Rogers fit that team quite well. It was Johnson, the all-pro, who wouldn't have been a good fit on that historic 2008 Lions team.
Yeah an all-pro and the widely agreed-upon best receiver in the NFL wouldn't have helped that team in their quest for perfection.
I didn't really follow the draft back then, I think it'd be interesting to hear the logic of picking Rogers at the time over a similarly talented receiver, a la Suh over McCoy.
It just pains me to see those two picks.
I think Charles Rogers was talented enough to be drafted where he was. I just don't think he had the make-up of a guy who should be instantly receiving millions of dollars. Injuries hurt him too. Since I'm sounding like a Millen supporter, I'll say this, drafting Mike Williams in the top 15 after he had a year off from football is unforgivable.
Charles Rodgers was not talented enough to be picked there. They did not need a wide receiver more than other positions. Moreover, it was well known the guy had "issues" including drug use at MSU. There's a reason they do background searches. The Lions would have known about that and they still took him. Ryan Mallet is perfect example. If Millen had been choosing at 12 he would be with the Lions now!
all over him. Due diligence might have suggested he had the mental makeup of a two-year-old, a gun-toting two-year-old, but hey. . .
Hindsight is 20:20. Although I agree that he shouldn't have been picked by the Lions in that draft, he was certainly good enough (from what was seen at the time) to be drafted that high. Don't you remember that he was "Charles Rogers. I had 68 catches and 13 touchdowns"?
Anyway, agreed Millen is a douche who does not deserve to be on TV anymore bc he's full of shit and we're gonna tool on Sparty for the first damn time in 4 years.
IIRC, his issues preceded MSU. His high school girlfriend stabbed him with a fork during lunch.
Then everyone else was a Moran since he was sloted as a top 3-5 pick. He hit Moran staus when he moved up in the draft to take Drew Stanton when he could have taken Woodly or Harris.
Maybe the sign is actually in reference to a family with the last name Moran.
So the guy who drafted an overweight, out of shape, out of football for a year Mike Williams says MSU is a title contender....I'll buy it.
I mean this going clearly knows champions when he see's them, right?
That means they'll have to beat us.. Not happening. Go blue!
The only piece of commentary Millen gave that I ever thought was any good was during the UCONN game (correct me if that is wrong) when Denard took off and all you hear is Millen saying, "That's 6!".
Other than that, he has brought nothing but shame upon himself and a once proud NFL franchise. Good thing we are breaking down the old iron bars of the cage he put around the might Lions.
Last year...43ish yd scamper...awesome little bit cause he called it quite early and so matter of factly...
The WMU game was the "look at that speed" call right after they talked about how dangerous Denard could be on broken plays, such as the fumbled snap which had just happened.

Can he really believe it? What's his angle?
Of course, this is Matt Millen, and he very well may believe it.
Correct me if I'm wrong...
But it was supposed to be a "dark horse" list.
... Which is still a stretch.
Millen is always good for commentary GOLD
Well, we know MSU is going winless now. Sweet!
since when does anyone take that jackass's opinion anyways? what baffles me more is how his ugly mug shot ends up on ESPN gameday. Of course its ESPN and we all saw what they posted about the Alabama player.

I see an echo.
Matt Millen -- proper noun -- played DT at Penn State when Joe Paterno was just old, not grim reaper old -- turned the Lions from a semi-pathetic football team to the laughing stock of sports -- ass hat
Millen was a linebacker, not a DT.
He played DT at PSU.
Not according to anything I can find:
I have a hard time believing TV Guide is the only source you could find on Millen. He played LB in the pros. He was primarily a DT at PSU. He earned All-America honors as a DT in 1978.
I could see a beefier, fitter Millen plowing into offensive guards and centers over and over.
A lot of times when teams shifted from 4 person lines to 5 person lines during run heavy situations - instead of sliding the line and putting say an OLB as a DE - many teams put their MLB down in a 4 point stance on the line as DT. This was due to several reasons. First, back then teams were obviously more run heavy, so MLB didn't need to be as athletic and good at coverage. Secondly, point one lead to that fact that many MLB were nearly the size of D lineman, usually your best tacklers and probably one of your most athletic players on the field. Defeating the center/guard and getting penetration stopped a lot of the things those offenses were trying to do back then.
In summary, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Millen was a DT/MLB at Penn St.
