OT- Osama Bin Laden is Dead
Apparently something big is happening in the world. We have NO idea what. But I suggest you get to a television.
The only thing they have said is that it is "national security related."
EDIT: Twitter is abuzz with a rumor that we got Bin Laden. Waiting for TomVH to confirm. Also, If this is too political, feel free to delete. But I thought this might generate some interest.
EDIT II: CNN confirms: the United States has the body of Osama Bin Laden. War on Terror Muppets.
EDIT III: Thread locked to prevent the inevitable political flame war from escalating. [ZL]
..and to this day, I remember where I stood and how I felt as I played my part. The atmosphere in the Big House was electrifying and incredibly powerful, and I still get chills thinking about it.
It brings tears to my eyes too. Glad you found this and posted it.
What I should have found last night. Plus...uh, whatever these comment things are now....
I would just like to point out that in the msnbc.com computer simulation of the raid, the SEALs were blue and the al Qaeda figthers were red. Seems about right...
I think this thread has served its purpose, and the inevitable politics are starting to creep in. Obviously it's up to you, but it might be about time to let it drift on down the river.
Particularly the CIA in cooperation with a group of 6 Navy Seals. Too bad my Army Rangers didn't get to him first. Although I don't think he would be identifyable if it had been us! GO RED WHITE AND BLUE~!
Well, it would appear so, but I'm still waiting for Tom VH's confirmation before I celebrate.
Awesome.
Has Donald Trump taken credit for this yet?
May that POS rot in a special place in hell for eternity.
going on (pun very much intended). Killed in raid, identified, DNA tested, dumped at sea, in like an hour. This has to be the most confusing and perplexing international event that I have ever witnessed. There is another shoe, it will fall. Not predicting or believing that anything is going to happen domestically, but this is a peice to a bigger puzzle that is either coming together or falling apart rapidly, not sure which quite yet. I am on pins and needles today, this news in the way that it is being presented is givng me a very uneasy feeling. Signed "relieved, confused, and terrified American citizen." And why is Fox News spelling his name with a U.
http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten
Because according to the FBI, that's how his name is spelled.
but how did my post get removed? It was completely void of any political commentary of any sort. I am a Repulicrat, a Demoblican even.
A symbolic victory at most, and after great cost. What's with all the patriotism? After a ten year war, does his death actually make you feel good? Different? Safer?
wanted by every law enforcement agencies in the world for committing some of the worst possible acts of terrorism ever in our history or the worlds history.
Really? This is just a small victory? What are you even talking about? Do you stop hunting murderers after 10 years because, well it's gotten to expensive, or why would we feel safe after he died?
The man committed murder against your fellow citizens and deserved to die! Period!
You downplay this at the risk of sounding like a hater and have just trivialized every death that the US has suffered hunting for this piece of shit, in your one ignorant sentence!
I'm not even going to tell you that you should pipe down about it, because it's your right. I am going to tell you that you are flat out wrong!
I didn't say small victory. I said symbolic victory. And I never said he didn't deserve to die, he did. But this show of solidarity behind his death is a false jazz, another empty rallying cry. The war goes on, soldiers fight and die, and really nothing has changed. To believe that the death of this man changes anything worldwide is a delusion.
By the way, you sure inferred a lot from a short post that was simply stating that tens of thousands of people have been lost to this cause, and our soldiers are still not coming home, even after the man that launched the ships is now dead. The ills war still spiral.
combined with the rest of your sentence does not infer "small"?
The show of solidarity can easily be described as a collective sigh of a nation(s) that have been held hostage by the worst terrorist orginization and it's leader for many years.
But if you can't see that this does weaken the orginization and assist in cracking it open even further then I can't help you.
Does it kill it with one blow? No! But it is certainly more than what your post sounded like, and to me that sounded like, "BIG DEAL".
It is a Big Deal!
That is all!
This provides a nice jumpstart to my day.
This is something I figured would be happening shortly...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110502/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_bin_laden_sea_burial
For those that want a Sparknotes version: Bin Laden was "buried at sea", and people are pissssssed. I understand the reasoning for being buried at sea (i.e., avoid becoming a "shrine"), but I feel an unmarked grave would've done the same thing.
This probably isn't a "tipping point", but this just reinforces my gut feeling that something bad is going to happen soon. I just hope we can thwart it before it happens.
You can be certain the radicals will seek vengence. But to be honest, we needed to take the body from the site for proper identification. The radicals were going to be pissed either way, even if we were to give his remains back for land burial.
Personally, I'm glad Osama sleeps with the fishes. Could not have happened to a more deserving individual.
BURN!
I wish they hadn't buried him at sea. Without a body, the US will get all sorts of conspiracy theories and doubt.
This happened just in time for Trey Parker and Matt Stone to write a South Park episode about it and squeeze it in this season!
Or by this Wednesday.
We got it. Bin Laden is dead. Please remove from top of MGoBoard and resume moving new posts down chronologically. Thank you.
It's a shame they could only kill him once.
I am very suspicious of the government's claim that they disposed of the body that quickly. In nearly every death involving high level figures in the history of this country, and in deaths involving international figures famous, notorious and otherwise, there is an autopsy performed as a routine and important procedure. Furthermore, given the 'family tree' of the Bin Laden's, I would think they would keep a significant portion of OBL's DNA, for later use, much like they did with his sister's brain. Also, given all of the speculation by the military, etc., related to his health ('is he dragging a dialysis machine around?'), I would think an autopsy would have been done to end that speculation. Candidly, I don't believe he was dumped in the ocean, but I do believe he is dead. And THAT, is the happy bottom line.
They took out his compound about a week ago. So Osama corpse was rotting away.
unless you know something the news media doesn't, that's not right. They attacked yesterday, shot him yesterday, and dumped him in the sea yesterday.
yes he was killed yesterday - i believe that in the Islam religion, it is customary to bury the body before 24 hours has passed (heard this on a radio show so take it with a grain of salt). The same radio show was talking about how we tried to give his body to the Islam church to bury and they refused (once again not stating this as fact just saying what I've heard).
This would at least explain the burial at sea so quickly after to attack but to me it just seems funny that we would respect this guys religious rituals.
This is just something I have heard that could explain it. TFWIW
I'm no scholar on the topic, but I got this from about.com and it seems legit based on what I've heard and would put a de-facto twenty four hour limit on burials.
The burial should be done as soon as possible after death, but the following times should be avoided : At night. From sunrise until the sun is fully risen. At the zenith of the sun (The sun at the meridian), until it passes the meridian. When the sun pales before sunset until it has set. During these times burying is prohibited unless there is an urgent necessity, according to the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that was narrated by (Muslim)
To everyone's conspiracy theory delight...ask yourself, who really profits by revealing or claiming it NOW? If someone, anyone was going to try and pop this out at an opportunistic time, it would be right before an election. Not May. This doesn't do anything for anyone to "fix" it for now. It happened now, because it just happened now.
It is going to suck balls hearing all about the "way it really happened" and "what actually happened".
I bet UBL has an audio recording saved for just this purpose, and we're going to hear all about how he actually isn't dead, and how the US is saying he is because we're all such bad people.
But unclear why such a reportedly 'quick' burial at sea? If the attitude is to get the garbage off the deck as soon as possible, I could understand. But there is signficant importance related to a comprehensive autopsy, and I doubt that happened if the media reported time frame is accurate.
dictates that the dead be buried within 24 hours of death. Why do you need an autopsy if there is a bullet wound in the head and the guy that shot him says, "he died when my bullet entered his brain."
I heard that they might be shipping the body to Saudi so that his father can bury him. I heard that bin laden and his father have sort of an estranged relationship because bin laden has been bad to his father's business (who is the richest man in saudi that is not from royalty).
As I understand it in Islamic tradition it is very important for the father to bury his son.
Maybe my cousin in Afghanistan can comehome soon now. Thank you to all that have and still do serve our country!
Honestly, I'm not sure how much impact this has in Afghanistan. If everything goes according to plan I'll be deployable sometime in early 2013 and I honestly wouldn't be shocked if I did a tour there.
I wish this weren't the case- frankly it's sad that it is- but I don't think this war is about to be over because UBL is dead. There's still the Afghan central government to prop up, not to mention a resurgent Taliban and terrorists in caves.
Here's hoping I'm dead wrong and you can see your cousin very shortly, though.
I really hope that this thing can end, but like you I think the killing of bin laden will not end the war.
It was a great accomplishment for the US and the men and women who serve us, but in the grand scheme of the war on terror, I think it was very minor.
Some people are saying that this might have an adverse affect in the US later on. People might start to think that killing bin laden is the end game. Because of this, it could make people in the US even more weary and restless about our involvement in the middle east.
Killing him was indeed an accomplishment probably on par with Hitler's stressed suicide; obviously great work from the SEALS and all the way up the chain of command. Although like I said above, unfortunately it doesn't spell the end of conflict, even with al Qaeda.
For a lack of a better word, the US has been fortunate or lucky to fight wars with a clear enemy. The Spanish-American War, Civil War, WW1&2, Korean War, Vietnam we knew who we were fighting. It was very black and white who the enemy was. On the other hand the war we are fighting now is very muddled and not so black and white. I guess bin laden was kind of the face of the enemy and we have killed him. The only thing is I don't think bin laden has had much influence directly with the al queda for some time now.

On the same day that it was reported that we killed bin laden a 12 year old suicide bomber killed 5 people in Kabul. I don't think bin laden had any direct impact on the actions of this young child. There are still many people who believe in the same ideals as bin laden that will continue their militant Islamic ways until they reach their goals. It is a long journey ahead for America to stop terrorism in the world. I'm just blessed to be living in a country that has brave men and women who will risk their lives to fight for our freedom. I thank you and everyone else for their service to our country.
Vietnam is actually pretty comparable to Afghanistan in a lot of ways. We're fighting a non-regular army that tends to blend in with the local population; the reason it hasn't been as bad is a) I think a lot of people were more pissed off at the Taliban in Afghanistan than were pissed off with communist rule in Vietnam and b) we're actually using tactics appropriate for the fight, and have been since the beginning.
And thanks, but I still have a long way to go before I'm a Marine. Have to come back for senior year, get accepted to OCS, graduate college, graduate OCS. Very doable, but not a sure thing by any means.
I love America. "waiting for tomvh to confirm" lol

Gigantic trash can eating crab...
Thanks for allowing this thread to remain on the board. Inevitably there would be some political bickering, but this was definitely a moment in history, one of those "you'll never forget where you were when you heard..." sort of deals. As mentioned, the credit is Jiff and will and should be spread around to thousands of individuals.
While I would love to see the SEALs involved interviewed, part of me wants them to remain anonymous and for this to stand as a battle won by everyone who has and continues to serve.
In regard to asking why an autopsy prior to disposal, you don't need to remind me about the cause of death. Autopsies are performed for a variety of reasons, and I'm not here to educate anyone on that. I"m simply saying that they are routinely performed in these situations. It appears we have various information on Muslim culture's funeral protocol. Maybe an actual Muslim or other intelligent person could get us all clear on what that is. Regardless, any reasonable person would question the narrow window of time between firefight, killing Obama, extracting his body to a secure location, and placing his body into the sea. I am simply seeking answers.
