Maize Jerseys
Has Michigan worn maize jerseys in a game?
I did not think they ever have, but we seem to per this graphic: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xHjP1chJYqM/TG96Q_T4fJI/AAAAAAAAAn8/dLKRVtU8K14/s1600/Michigan.jpg
Really? Was the artist taking license with this or is this historically accurate?
A quick Google image search of the 1964 team:
I'm seriously doubting it, but I did find the following:
The 1964 Wolverines posted a 9-1-0 record en route to their 21st Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl victory over Oregon State. The "Blue" were coached by College Football Hall of Famer—Chalmers ‘Bump’ Elliott who at age 34, became Michigan's football coach. He served 10 years as Michigan’s sideline boss. http://www.collegefootball.org/famersearch.php?id=40051
The Michigan uniform featured below consisted of a maize (yellow) jersey with blue numerals on the front and back and an ‘M’ on each sleeve. Players also wore maize pants and blue helmets with maize wing and stripes and their uniform number on each side.

The action shot in the PDF version is in black and white, so it's useless, but i'll share anyway.

I feel like there was a post about a rumor that we were going to wear all maize uniforms for the ND game, but it was swiftly deleted by the mods. I guess the rumor has some legs now.
They're definitely wearing a throw-back, but the question is which? Brian Kelly of ND kind of dropped hints and essentially ruined the surprise... it's looking like the block M on the shoulders/sleeves will reappear. Then again, he's a cock juggling thundercunt, so who knows.
cock juggling thundercunt... that might be the greatest insult i've heard in a while
I "borrowed" it from Kevin Nealon's character in Weeds. Pretty much the best insult i've ever heard.
As a secondary question, can someone explain why we're not wearing the 1891 model against ND? We didn't play them in '91, but we would have killed them if we did.
Better yet, if we want to see who is tougher, they should wear the actual jerseys worn back in 1891, including the leather helmets. That'll show who is tough (and if Mattison can teach form tackling!).
Somewhere, Dayne Crist is begging you to take that back.
Seriously though, we might as well go all out. I don't want to see some stupid uniform like OSU wore last year. Or, because I know you watched it profit, both teams in the Backyard Brawl. I'd rather see them wear something that Yost thought was old-school.
Goddamnit, justingoblue! Are you hiding in my office, listening to my thoughts?
My immediate reaction to profitgoblue's post was, "man, why does profit hate Crist so much?"
+1 just because that was hilarious.
My first thought when I looked at that was "damn, those 1891 uniforms kick ass!" Fingers crossed those make a come back.
The 1879 ones, though, look like some combination of fencer, in-mate, and sailor.
Yea, like something they'd make Hannibal wear.
Is that a hat? It sure looks like one. If we broke that out for Notre Dame in the form of like a doo rag, I could die right after the game fully satisfied.
If we were to bust out those bad boys for the ND night game I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Those would look awesome. What color pants do you think we'd put with them?
those '91s are sickkkkkkkkkk! *crosses fingers for a comeback*
Who says they aren't wearing 1891 jerseys for the Notre Dame game....not saying you are right but if I could say you would be closer than the people thinking they are wearing normal home attire.
BRING BACK THE 91's... DIRTY!!!!!
Here is (what google tells me is) a team photo from 1891, including at least one guy rocking the kick ass uniform.
FYI: The young man front and center is George Jewett, Michigan's first black football player (via Blacks on Campus).
As a member of the '91 squad, I have but the fondest memories for those uniforms. Those were quite the trousers as well.
This picture is of course from my days on the '89 team when I chose to go with a mustachioed look.
That wouldn't happen to be you rocking the stache right in front of George Jewett would it?
That would be my good friend George S. Holden.
But boy did we have some wild times. I remember them as days of felicity where we would imbibe Fredrick Miller's High Life in such quantities that we would would be unable to fornicate with the fair maidens of Ann Arbor.
Brian,
Bring back voting. Please! Can he have 1000 of my points?
Sincerely,
Zone Left
Oh Zone Left, you're such a sucker for a Prettyface.
The creator of that pic should have specified that the "1997" uniform was just the 1998 Rose Bowl jersey, not our regular jersey.
off the names until we learn how to tackle. No helmet stickers, although that 75 looks kinda cool, and no names. The team, the team, the team...
I really like the 1904. I've seen it before, and obviously we don't want puffy sleeves, but something with that pattern would be cool.
the 1904 jerseys look like some sort of bad ass armor.
I actually thought they looked like a suit for fencing or something.
I've been playing a lot of Fallout 3 lately...
wore these this year against the 9ers...I like them but I think I'm in the minority as far as Packer fans.
The brown helmets represent the old leather ones...heres what these bad boys are based on.
And if you, my friend, are a minority-you would be the only Packers fan who is one.
As a bears fan, I'm legally required to hate every design of the packers. However, I did really like the orange and navy bears throw-backs they wore a while ago.
Would love to see us go back to the 2004 road unis. Which reminds me-- it's time for my annual hand written letter urging us to go back to a more traditional road uniform. I can't stand the road uniforms now. We look like Toledo or West Virgina.
Out of the top 10 winningest programs, we're the only one that has "piping" and other gimmicky features to our road unis. Why would we not want to identify wtih the blue bloods of college football?
I agree. Fortunately, some of the practice shots seem to suggest that we may be going away from that look. There are photos of players wearing what look like game jerseys, but without that ugly curved stripe.
The maize jerseys in that '64 graphic were worn in practice only. The people who made that graphic got it wrong and assumed they were game jerseys. I think MVictors or someone else on the blogosphere asked Jim Conley about it before he passed and he clarified that they were never used in a game.
would be horrid. Please no.
Maize would be great for the away jerseys. The current aways are neither interesting nor traditional. White jersey with maize pants? Meh.
I have a friend who was on the 64 team. I'll shoot him a note to see if they wore maize jerseys that year. Will let everyone know.
Wow. I never knew there was historicity to the Maize Jersey movement. I always thought it was part of the RAWK Muzak trend.
How about # 81 in the OP's pic. Way to ruin the photo
Forget throwback uniforms, we should have throwback game recaps thusly:
That's what MS Paint is for.
That 1923 uniform looks more like hockey gear. I can see Carl Hagelin tucking that shirt right in the back of those pads ... bork bork
we wear maize jerseys in basketball and hockey, and I'd say they are both very popular. I think we could rock them on the road, because I don't think anyone has any attachment to the road uniforms, especially since they've switched them so many times anyways.
I'm not saying we go all crazy like this or anything.....
, but make the whole jersey maize with blue numbers with white piping... i think we may be in business. hell, make them wear black socks and black cleats.
Not a fan of the jersey but, that helmet is NASTY! I love that thing.
The captain of the 65 team is a good friend of mine and he swears they only wore maize jerseys in practice. I have a poster that he actually gave me that has the 64 maize jersey on it, but he is very convinving in that it was never worn in a game.
I heard we were actually going to wear the 64 jerseys for this years ND game... Truth?
At this point, all that we know for sure is that there will be Block M's on the shoulders and numbers on the helmets, and there may or may not be ongoing negotiations over the final design of the uniforms between the AD and Adidas.
